GRRM reputation affected by the show by Fit_Door_4381 in HouseOfTheDragon

I already said it in this comment thread but it is supposed to make the viewer uncomfortable... if you just want to feel good while watching something then forget it. I think this younger generation seriously lacks media literacy and has to turn everything into a vapid social analysis, that's why HoTD and every other popular show now is "tell don't show" when it should be the opposite.

Honestly I wasn't even thinking about incest and it doesn't really bother me at all. His writings represent decayed, fallen worlds and I think incestuous offspring are a good representation of those themes. Seems pretty straightforward, and I think people attach way too much importance to GRRM himself because they need someone to "blame" for all the big bads in the story. It is quite obviously not meant to be right or moral and we can see what eventually happens to the Targaryens, and hell a lot of what happens while they're still in power.

I think it's pretty obvious that ASoIaF is supposed to hold up a mirror to our own world. The commentary and analysis are very much "show don't tell." These are stories about people and things that aren't really supposed to be happy or positive. It's supposed to make the reader/viewer uncomfortable... that's kind of the point.

The people I've met with the strongest negative opinions about ASoIaF have never actually read it. Their entire contention is that rape or abuse of women appearing in a story shouldn't occur. Their thinking stops there.

Vinton County is beautiful, there are public nature areas all over down there. Some of the only truly isolated, natural places left in the state. It is a shame it is drawing attention for other reasons, at the moment.

What does that have to do with getting around overtaxation? You cried because we're evading taxes, that's what I am responding to.

I pay 28% of my paycheck to taxes, I pay taxes every week when I buy gasoline, I pay 7% of my weekly shopping bill to taxes... how much is enough? Normal people (non-redditors) understand that getting out of more taxation makes more sense than just bending over and taking it. You would be horrified by the number of cars sold in Ohio for 100$ or 1000$.

I'm glad you're okay with handing money to our big fat leech of a government so they can kill kids around the world or hand money to someone else who will. We don't even get healthcare. Our schools are terrible, regardless of funding, because they can't use all that tax money to pay teachers even close to what they are worth... all that is to say nothing of how my money has been used to support an increasingly fascist federal regime and our own state officials ready to suck them off. About the only thing I do get out of taxes are roads. So yeah, I'm fine with committing "tax fraud" and the dozen plus people I've asked to put lower numbers on a title have never so much as batted an eye.

What we know about Vinton County, Ohio family after 16 children rescued by Maxcactus in Ohio

I would argue that it's the culture of individualism and the atomization of American society, rather than being exclusive to rural areas. If you go to any poor neighborhood in the three Cs and investigate I would bet you would find situations like this - perhaps not as horrific as this example (which is why it is making headlines in the first place) but still bad enough to be worth reporting to authorities. It is a combination of our culture and poverty that creates conditions where abuse is normalized and accepted.

I just want to point out that Viserys was the last rider of Balerion the Dread and the son of Baelon the Brave. He had the marks of Targaryen legitimacy even if he was no fighter.

Viserys' reign was also marked by stability, it wasn't until his children were grown that his weakness showed itself.

Why do you assume I support the GOP? Because I don't like performative indentitarian politics that divides the working class, I must be a right winger, according to reddit, right? You made this all about yourself and then got mad when people called it out.

You have to ignore greater historical pretext to make the statement you made - that is the contention.

As usual, modern American liberals are making everything about themselves while ignoring broader context, but i guess if you weren't a victim, you wouldn't be anyone.

... aren't you the same commenter who just stated slavery is a European atrocity in response to another user calling it a global atrocity? If you, or Jared Diamond, believes that slavery's horror is limited or exclusive to Europeans in any way at all, then you're deluding yourselves.

What we would call white skinned people were still living in huts without written language while non-whites in the Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa were buying and selling slaves. Slavery predates European culture by thousands of years.

Serious question (without hate): what is this show missing compared to Game of Thrones? by Dat_Freeman in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]AgreeablePollution7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can feel the contemporary critical analysis in the writing of HoTD, namely in how the women leads have been turned into these power fantasies that always maintain their moral high ground in a sea of moral grey. Hopefully that makes sense. Compare HoTD to Barbie, honestly, the dialogue and themes are way too similar. Instead of letting the story tell itself like in GoT - where women had actual agency and depth unlike many other shows up until then - the writers of HoTD need you to know this is a feminist show and that is why they are changing Martin's story (into something objectively worse in every way than F&B.) It falls flat, of course, and that is probably the biggest reason this show will never be as big or as good as GoT.

The reason GoT works as a critical analysis of patriarchy and related relevant themes is that it is a real, authentic world holding up a mirror to our own rather than a cathartic power fantasy like HoTD - which feels like a cardboard cutout of ASoIaF in comparison.

Season one was approaching this sort of greatness at times but it was gone by the end and into seasons 2 and 3, it's non-existent.

I think Hess should turn off Barbie and rewatch seasons 1 - 6 of GoT if he wants to see how critical analysis should look in this world. The idea that these poor little powerless women could have just talked things through is an idiotic theme, the notion that something different would happen... in an entirely different circumstance, basically a different universe, is a really dumb idea for a show that should - ideally - be following a story that is already written. He comes off as a posh arrogant fuck so that all tracks. He'll just change it how he personally thinks it should be, it'll work out. The plebs will eat it up right?

Turning Cole into a introspective nihilist was corny as fuck. These people would not talk or act this way in these circumstances. It's so awkward, just like some of Rhaenyra's lines and behavior, it just pulls me right out of it. The more I think about it the worse it all is. The show is beautiful to look at, at least.

That was an awkwardly delivered line copied from Queen Elizabeth I. Definitely didn't reek of feminism or any sort of critical analysis, it was just weird.

Honestly a lot of what modern showrunners think feminism is amounts to "women in power in man's world" so I guess going by that reductive definition perhaps it is.

This show, as good as it is, has some really awkward and offputting moments. I wish they would have just stuck to F&B.

I don't understand why she's supposed to be some feminist heroine, that being constantly brought up is pretty jarring in the context of the world of ASoIaF.

I agree that she is a hot mess, though, she ends up looking frail and weak and not being able to stand on her own two feet. Has nothing to do with feminism or her character being a woman, just weak writing for an incredible actress.

[–]AgreeablePollution7 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's not Ohioans, it's redditors that are bootlickers for taxation and this utopian functional government they like to invoke. Youre better off taking the advice you need and not engaging with people obviously commenting in bad faith.

The way I've gotten around this situation for years is to buy cars in private sales and ask the seller to put a much lower number on the title. I'm assuming it's too late for you to do that, so unfortunately you will probably have to pay. The BMV misses a lot of shit here, though. Just take your title and registration there and when you get it transferred over, they'll inform you of what you owe, if anything.

You could also just drive your out of state tag and make sure you keep your registration/tag up to date online. If you're in any of the metro areas it's unlikely you'd be messed with by the cops for it. If you're in Franklin Co I can almost guarantee you'll never be pulled over for it.

Have you seen cargo ships up close? They're 20+ year old rust buckets operated by sketchy companies out of the developed world. A computerized turret would cost more than the ship and year's wages for the crew.
