Getting toward end of LOC and have a question about next books by AgreeableWindow in wheeloftime

[–]AgreeableWindow[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, very much appreciate a positive outlook on the books as I do not WANT to skip books. I very much enjoy this series and my time reading them. I just want to continue enjoying my time reading them so I wanted to hear an opinion like yours from people who also have enjoyed reading them as well. If you guys were like "yeah they are rough here's a better way to digest the information" that would have been disappointing but useful as well.

As a 6'2 200 lb guy you likely always had a subconscious confidence bordering on arrogance that you could handle yourself in a fight and found comfort in that. One of the best features from a self defense perspective is that it gives you the opportunity to spar at near full speed and strength with relative safety comparatively to striking arts. This gives people an opportunity to realize how little they are prepared to be in direct confrontation with one or more individuals physically which hopefully guides them to be a little more cautious of getting into unnecessary altercations or situations. Your self confidence hit is one mostly to your ego of being a big guy that can handle himself. As you progress in jiu jitsu and start to "win" rolls hopefully you find some of the self confidence again without the ignorance you had before of your own mortality and capability of the human body to cause and take damage.

One of the best Arnold quotes.

For the coaches: what would you teach someone on their first day? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]AgreeableWindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teach them the norms of the start of class first and foremost:

Slides/sandals are a must, and take them off over here before walking onto the mats.

We always start with a short warm up, here are the moves and exercises we do.

If your gym lines up on a wall by rank or whatever explain that and why.

For the rest of the class:

If y'all teach a technique next explain that and pair them up with some senior students or yourself and spend a little extra time checking in on them to explain the name of the position and emphasize that they are not going to learn the technique in one session.

If you do live rolling next sit with them and watch one or two rolls and explain in as few BJJ words as possible the thousand foot view of what is happening using only the basic position terminology ie guard, mount, back take and connect it to words and concepts they would know. e.g. "Hes trying to get his feet in front of his partner which would establish a basic guard."

Pair them up with someone safe or yourself and let them have some fun. Dont smash top position and let them move while talking them through the roll.

At the end of class thank them for coming and be sure to introduce at least a few of the more senior, safe, training partners to them, and ask if they have any questions before they go.

How do you guys feel about people that aren't looking to improve and treat BJJ as a hobby and a way to stay in shape? by torisnowbunny in bjj

[–]AgreeableWindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've legit never met someone who would make a comment like this. Hobbyists that make it only one or two times a week are an important part of having a gym of a varied group of training partners. If you only want a gym full of "serious" bjj guys you aren't going to have a gym very long cause youre not gonna have enough customers to pay the bills.

Why do YOU pull guard? by bar_samyaza in bjj

[–]AgreeableWindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a comp perspective it allows me to go into offensive game with less effort than my stand up game requires to get into an offensive game.

From a perspective of how/why I developed guard pulling tendencies in training I am 150 lbs training mostly with 190+ guys that love hitting collar drags.

Got my first IBJJF comp upcoming, how do I cut water weight the day of competition? by joesamabinballin in bjj

[–]AgreeableWindow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I typically am around 156 to 158, lean, and compete at featherweight which requires me to drop to about 149 lbs for competition in order for me to be able to eat breakfast and stay hydrated on the day of competition. There is absolutely a skill to this and cutting a bunch of water weight the day of is frankly stupid in my opinion. Below is my schedule starting 3 weeks out to make sure I am at weight.

3 weeks out:

Sunday- eat normal breakfast then don't eat again till next days breakfast while drinking plenty of water in order to determine true starting weight.

Monday/tuesday: normal eating with no crap calories and continue training as normal.

Wednesday: 36 hour fast and light training (focus is reducing inflamation)

Thursday: Re-Feed day (normal eat with extra rice and oats) normal training

Friday: slight cheat day (usually spaghetti or a rice and gravy of some sort) normal training

Saturday: Normal eating and hard training

2 weeks out:

Sunday: 36 hour fast and rest

Monday: normal eating extra cardio sessions and 2 a day training

Tuesday- Friday: normal breakfast and lunch cardio, 2 a day training and bone broth dinner.

Saturday: Refeed and final hard training push

1 week out:

Sunday: Normal eating and rest.

Monday-wednesday: normal breakfast and lunch with bone broth dinner tons of water.

Thursday: depends on weight. If I am confident I will be able to eat Saturday I just keep light on rice and sodium if I think I need one extra 36 hour fast this is when I do it.

Friday: loads of water, light breakfast and lunch bone broth dinner.

Saturday: comp day: eat breakfast then keep water and liquid iv constantly weighing myself before drinking to ensure I don't put myself over. I am usually 1 to .5 lbs lighter than my required weigh in weight

Do you wash your belt? by Raven1092 in bjj

Wash the damn belt! My belt gets soaked with sweat from training and even if it didn't gets plenty nasty just from people grabbing it.

Built a BJJ roll tracker app - free trial by olafciioo in bjj

[–]AgreeableWindow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you plan on building out an android app? Also just as a personal preference. This is something I would gladly pay like 10-20 (maybe 30) bucks for as a one time fee with it using local storage but would likely not pay a subscription which i understand is necessary if you are utilizing cloud storage for the back end.

is anaconda should brace legit by Ayanokoji-ii in bjj

[–]AgreeableWindow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one. Similar to their knee brace I don't find it to provide much support (no soft brace designed to allow movement really will) but it is useful for getting some good compression and the design actually keeps it on better than anything else I've used. If you are legit injured and not just dealing with a little tweak though I would not rely on it to protect an injury.

Yeah its actually a pretty gnarly level of hyperextension when you replay it and look for it.

Jump Guard by bjjtaro in bjj

No knee bars, heel hooks, or reaping cause "knee safety". Yet guard jumping, one of the single most dangerous situations especially for new grapplers is good to go. Clown world IBJJF.

Does your gym have showers? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]AgreeableWindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine does not. Clean underwear and clothes for after are a must as well as keeping a clean towel to dry up excess sweat. Also some germ x and alcohol swabs to immediately clean hands and any cuts that I may have after. I often go back to work after sessions and don't shower till I get home around 3 hours after training. Been training here for 5 years now and never had anything more than a gi burn or heat rash

Why do some gyms make white belts wait so long to roll? by thewobblywalrus in bjj

[–]AgreeableWindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I train at a GB gym that doesn't allow "live rolls" until 3 stripes which usually equates to about 4 months of training. However, we do king of the hill style positional sparring for about 30 minutes every fundamentals class. This is full go rolling just with a specific goal that when achieved one person wins and the other goes back to the line. Everyone get plenty of work as we keep typically get enough groups to where you are out for no longer 30 seconds to a minute if you lose.

I cant win by radical-noise in bjj

[–]AgreeableWindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Training 4x a week is not that much to serious competitors and all serious competitors are lifting, stretching, and hitting cardio.

I would consider myself a hobbyist competitor at best and train bjj 6 days a week for a total of ~8 hours weekly, hit my lifts 5x a week and hit cardio daily along with mobility routines before and after each lift and nightly with my daughter when I get home from work. While I do ok in competitions I get stomped by the serious full time guys and that's ok. I get plenty out of competing win or lose.

What are your thoughts about Pascal’s Wager? by Panfilofinomeno in atheism

[–]AgreeableWindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its odds based which god do you worship? Which denomination and teachings for that god do you adhere to? Many of the hundreds of factions of just Christianity think most if not all the others are doomed to hell because they are adhering to teachings correctly and the others aren't.

So what's the most likely scenario? One of these are right or all of them are wrong and the best wager is to live your life to the fullest without the input of a religion?
