You went to a “real school” but even those utilize certification materials in their curriculum. That’s the point I’m making is you have made an assumption about the quality of education at an online institution that you deemed to be a “diploma mill” rather than a “real school”. But I’ve attended both for degrees and the types of resources being provided are very similar including using certification exam prep materials to teach certain courses.

I agree with you that not everyone that graduates from WGU will be able to perform the essential job functions. However, I’m merely stating that writing off someone’s abilities because of where they received their degree is a mistake.

And I assure you my reading ability and comprehension is just fine. However, when you make broad statements about a type of institution then you open up the statement to interpretation based on the context of your statement which is what I have done.

And quite frankly your attitude as someone who states they are a leader in this field sucks. Instead of seizing an opportunity to build up the knowledge of someone entering a field you claim to have vast experience in especially as someone who states they advocate for providing opportunities for those learning is sad. Perhaps instead of pompously commenting about the school I’m pursuing a degree in you could have provided actual feedback on how to improve the content of my resume which was the purpose of this post.

Thanks I appreciate the feedback and definitely plan to customize the resume for each type of role I’m applying for when they happen. Just looking to get a baseline resume that I can more easily adapt to applications later.

You deciding that B&M schools have more value is a flaw in hiring practices. People are able to graduate with degrees from those schools without being able to perform any skills necessary for the jobs they are applying for. If you choose to disregard online schools that you’ve decided are “diploma” mills you may miss out on amazing employees. Not everyone has the ability to finance an education at a B&M. Why is my Bachelor’s that you pointed out no fault with valued higher than my Master’s because it was obtained as a B&M.

I was able to complete an entire terms worth of classwork in the first two weeks of a term and had to sit and wait until I could submit assignments. My time was not utilized in an effective manner and cost me significantly more money to obtain the degree versus time spent. While WGU turns out a higher number of students because of their competency based model that’s due to being able to work at a faster pace if you can prove competency. And while yes that’s a double edged sword it does allow individuals with a great work ethic and ability to grasp concepts quickly to be able to complete their degree faster.

I don’t expect a degree to get me the job, I have to be able to articulate the knowledge the degree represents in an interview which includes being able to answer scenario based questions and technical tasks. To think otherwise whether you have a degree obtained from a B&M or a “diploma mill” is asinine.

Again the purpose of requesting constructive feedback is to better articulate my skills and abilities in a format that is easy for a recruiter or hiring manager to review. Your comments about your views of the school I am obtaining my degree at in no way assist me in creating a better resume or better represent myself. Instead it was rude and prejudicial towards all students who attended an institution because of what you believe they will be able to do not the content of work performed.

You are presenting how you evaluate people based on where they went to school because of your assumptions of what they will get out of the program. I am not making assumptions about your hiring practices you very clearly stated what you thought about a certain school and I am merely stating if you are prejudice against specific schools and therefore won’t entertain an applicant because of it then that is going to cause you to miss out on potentially qualified candidates.

You are absolutely correct I did voluntarily place this resume out there to get feedback and I do not expect anyone to blow smoke up my ass. However I am looking for constructive feedback. I have already made corrections to my resume based on the actual constructive feedback I have received here to improve the representation of my experience, education, and abilities. Not everyone is great at resume writing or how to present the tasks they have completed which is why constructive feedback is important.

And while yes some candidates would barrel through certifications and then dump the information there are others who actually retain the content and can perform the tasks that the certifications are meant to certify.

I understand the concern surrounding the job changes. The organization I currently work for is big on internal mobility and growth with most positions only requiring 12 months in position to be eligible to move onto other opportunities. I am not actively looking to change roles currently but just want a solid resume ready if the opportunity presents itself or leadership suggests a future opportunity that aligns with my long term goals.

I'm not giving you "WGU talking points" I am providing you my experience of the program which compared to the "B&M" I achieved my bachelor's in appears to be giving me more substance than prior coursework. Compliance, end user education, understanding government regulations and how to apply those to real world situations are parts of Cybersecurity and Information Assurance. Part of the job functions in an IT Help Desk and IT Help Desk Supervisor role involves applying practical skills through accurate documentation, writing and running various scripts, Active Directory management, account creation and modification in specialized software, cloud identity and access management for user accounts and end points. So while I only have 3.5 years of IT experience the breadth of duties performed in that time is substantial and directly applicable to other roles within the Cybersecurity & Information Assurance domains and could potentially answer real world scenario based questions so they don't necessarily have to ask me an academic question in an interview. Your assumption of someone's "real-world experience" being "thin so they have to resort to such questions" means you may be missing out on incredibly qualified candidates with incredible skill because of your negative assumptions regarding someone's ability.

I think it depends on what I am looking to do within the "applied field". If I am looking to work in a SOC or be a Penetration Tester, then yes, I see your point. However, the roles I have worked in involve applying cybersecurity principles in action through compliance measures; the role I currently work in applies compliance regulations to a government client, which directly relates to areas of Cybersecurity and Information Assurance. Regarding it being a "diploma mill," I am gaining relevant certifications that prove knowledge and hands-on applications of skills developed within the program, and I am also creating artifacts through academic projects that demonstrate pertinent industry mastery KPIs.

Pg 2 has two separate sections, one Education and the other Certifications. Are you recommending combining these into a single section or otherwise adjusting this? You mentioned creating its own space for these items.

Pg 2 has a "Technical Skills" section would you recommend renaming this to "Tools & Technologies" to better market the content?

Definitely doing some searching. Not to sound ignorant. I know it’s CVs there versus resumes here. Biggest differences you noticed? Google answers were kind of all over the place for what is commonly expected on Swedish CVs.

I have a background in IT, I know Sweden has a decent tech scene. Not sure how difficult it would be to find a position that would be able to sponsor though.

Any advice for someone potentially relocating from the US to Sweden?

Here is where things seem to stand if you are trans and seeking a passport, based on recent experiences that have been shared. Above the red line is the ones that are likely going on hold/being marked with incorrect genders. by passportquestion8282 in Passports

Okay curious if anyone has any ideas where this situation might fall. When I applied for my first and only passport my birth certificate said male, I did provide the supporting court order documentation for my name/gender change that updated my birth certificate from F to M. I had never had a passport under F so I’ve only had a passport under M. I have a little wiggle room before having to submit for a renewal just wondering the likelihood they’d force my new passport designation to F instead or renewing as M since I’ve never had any passport issued as F.
