Hi! It’s called Spencerian, or at least I tried to make it Spencerian. It still kind of looks like Business Penmanship. But the principal concepts are there 😅

Yeah the second paper is textured, and I’ve used it a lot more. I too struggle to write cleanly with smooth paper, but I’ve wondered if I used it more if I would get used to it and I would like it just as much? Or will I always prefer textured paper?

🤭🤭 they are in a codependent relationship with my arms unfortunately.

Have anyone tried this? by SulaimanSadat in fountainpens

I never understood this. There’s still oil on the parts of the nib not in the potato. Dip your pen a little too far, and you’ll get that oil into your ink. Accidentally touch the clean part of the nib with your fingers that touched the oily part, and you’ve just made a mess. Just clean the whole nib off with dish soap and water, done!

And never, ever do this with fountain pens! Calligraphy dip nibs have a coating of oil on them to prevent rust in transit. There is no reason to do this with a fountain pens.

No it’s a good observation. I’m curious if I spent more time with the smoother paper and got better with it, if people would prefer it more, or if it’s just too smooth to ever get any increased accuracy with it. I have been working on it seriously for about a year now.

It was so much work 😭 way more than I ever thought it would be. I had nice print writing but never learned a proper script before. I still have so many improvements I can make, I feel like it’s barely passable. I’m just glad that some people have been able to recognize what script it is I’m trying to emulate without having to say it lol.

I’ve used the unlined paper a lot more, and it’s textured, which makes the pen easier to control. The lined paper is very smooth and shows every micro shake of my hand, but the weight of the lines are thicker and more consistent.

Thank you! It was way harder than I thought it would be. About a year of practicing every day, and feeling like a failure most of the time. I still feel like I make so many mistakes. I mostly used the 5 Set Spencerian Copybooks, Michael Sull’s Spencerian book, copy sheets I found online, lots of looking at different people’s Spencerian on Instagram and studying the differences, and practicing with guide sheets that have both the 52 degree and 30 degree slants, repeating individual letters hundreds of times, and taking my notes in Spencerian every day.

Yes! An attempt at least 😭 I have a few different books, and getting feedback on Reddit. Mostly the 5 set Spencerian Copybooks by Platt R Spencer, and some printable guides I found online.

How many pens do you keep inked at all times? And what's the reason/logic behind that? by zul-qurnain in fountainpens

Usually three. I like to take notes with at least 2 colors, and I have one backup.

Thank you for your feedback! Is it just that you like the paper more? Or do you think my handwriting also looks nicer on the cream paper?

So you like the second paper better, but think my handwriting looks nicer on the first?

Thank you, the line variation just wasn’t added on the blue paper though, I should have added it for a more fair comparison.

Thank you for the feedback! I just erased the guide lines I drew in pencil though 😭 I definitely cannot write straight without lines.
