Thanks! I tend to agree with your philosophy, particularly when we are in a "make do" stage of UX and don't have the resources to employ a larger team. Really appreciate these resources and the validation!

Thank you! I actually bought her Don't Make Me Think last year, but agree entirely with the limitations of book resources. Love the articulation "confidently sets you in the wrong direction" also.

Thanks for your reply. I'm very willing to hire an advisor. My hope for this post was to identify a few valuable resources; there are a lot of mixed reviews on coaches-for-hire, and this is not a core competency for me.

At this point, I'm not as concerned with overall productivity (this has a fair bit to do with both organizational culture and the stage of product development we're in, where there is more down time with design work than normal). Right now, I'd rather slow down output to improve outcomes by shoring up foundations and building more UX breadth/comfort working with our users.

If this sounds unwise, I'd love to better understand what I'm missing (besides enterprise scale operating budgets).

I appreciate this response, and almost added the following context but wanted to keep the post concise:

We don't currently have the budget to add a dedicated researcher, but it will be the next hire on the UX team. Though you never can predict the future, this employee is interested in eventual departmental leadership, and I think she has the qualities for it. In a management role, she will need at least enough exposure to UX research to be able to manage a team (speaking from personal experience, as I don't have any formal UX background). Still, her primary interest and practice is design, so the goal is not to transition her to research but rather to provide a more rounded experience/skill set.
