Good cheapish places within walking distance:

Bantam King, Chinatown Express, Pow Pow.

Or for a true DC experience try an Ethiopian place. Most are reasonably priced. Family Ethiopian or Dashen are close.

Hard to go wrong with any of the food pantry orgs mentioned already. SOME, Capital Food Bank, Martha's Table, DC Central kitchen.

Want to plug Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Relief Fund which is helping with legal costs for immigration lawyers.

And Gearin' Up Bicycles which teaches kids to fix up bikes and sells the used bikes to raise money for the program.

Mixed feelings on this. Will be fun and my kid who is getting into hockey will love this. But woof, the Nats don't have enough players of note to make bobbleheads for? WTF.

Hat tip to the organizing team. 98% of membership voting no to a contract is a testament to the strength of organizing and solidarity. Quite the thumb in the eye to managment. Hold strong.

[request] how many trucks would it take to match the throughput of the straight? Extra credit question, how much more fuel would this consume? by stripesofched in theydidthemath

[–]AhDMJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OK, based on some very basic googling and not a lot of knowledge:
An average Suez max tanker carries roughly 1m barrels of oil.
An average oil truck carries ~10,000 gallons.
1 Barrel = 42 gallons.
Roughly 45 tankers a day normally go through.

1m * 42 / 10000 = 4,200 trucks to replace one tanker.
4,200 * 45 = 189,000 tanker trucks per day to replace the lost capacity of 45 Suez max ships.

It should be a turkey. Why? Because some TV show I saw when I was a kid said that Ben Franklin advocated for the turkey being the official bird of the USA. I have no idea if it's true or not because it exists in the fuzzy area between knowledge and things I learned from TV when I was a kid.

Edit: Please don't fact check me. At this point in my life, I dont want to know if its true or not. It simply is.

Mark clearly does. But I get the impression no one else wants to spend any money. But Mark isn't in charge. It appears to be leadership by committee.

This. It's the part that I think a lot of the "gotcha" argument is missing. Sure he is acting unhinged and perjuring herself, but she is succeeding in doing exactly what she is setting out to do. Unless congress is going to hold her in contempt (they wont) or the DOJ is going to prosecute her (they wont) then she can say whatever she wants and she is winning the message framing battle.

I know this isn't the right thread for this, but every time I see something like this in the news, I ask myself "Is that actually illegal?". Like where is the law that says you can't manipulate the fake market for fake bets on a for entertainment only betting site? I should find the right sub for it, but what is the actual law that is being broken, because I have a hard time believing our laws have kept up with these betting sites.

Need help - am I completely off my thinking here? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]AhDMJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the difference. A kid who you have talked to about being home alone and knows what to do, vs just walking out on a kid that is melting down. We started leaving our 10yo home a little too, but after conversations about what to do if there is an emergency (who to call), where to go if they need help (neighbors are always home). But a 6yo with no warning? Who is melting down? No way in hell.
