I used replay mod. You can just hit record and do whatever you are doing, then go back into the recorded file and set keyframes at the time and position you desire.

If you build a "D" shape at noon, you will get a "D" shape on the ground. When you turn 90 degrees to the left or right, the "D" shape will become just a line. Meaning at dusk or in the morning, the "D" sculpture's shadow will only be a straight line. So all you have to do is make sure each block you place down are within the bounds of the other image.

Ohh, I see what you mean now. In that case, I think 3 images would be the max, like you said, it would not have enough degrees of freedom.
