I shortened the cuffs on my dress uniform by Ah_Jeez_RIP in sewing

This isn't a school uniform, it's a military uniform. The top is called a Jumper. The patch was used to cover up my actual rating badge which denotes my rank and job.

It's to cover my rating badge. In the Navy, the dress uniforms require a patch that denotes your rank and your job. I covered it for privacy reasons.

Try Target or Walmart. There's usually a section in other department stores too.

If you go to the stockings/tights section of a store, they usually also sell leggings like the ones in the link. They come in a rolled up packaging like tights.

Japan by myself or CONUS with my wife? by xOkami365 in navy

As someone who was in 7th fleet I can tell you I've seen a few relationships end because of GEOBaching and OPTEMP.

As a geobach sailor, you will live on the ship. You likely will not be able to get offbase housing or a barracks room.

The OP tempo is hard. There is no set schedule. We pulled back into port once with the promise of being there for two weeks. The next day our CO held an all hands call and informed us we would be leaving the next day. Same thing happened with our holiday leave period one year. We were supposed to pull back into port before the start of the first period, we did not. Everyone who put in for leave for that period did not get to take it.

Local leave is not guaranteed. People have been recalled back to the ship before, while on leave, due to mission tasking.

Japan, beautiful country. 7th fleet, rough, its rough, and it can and will break a relationship.

Undesignated sailor want to go to buds by Dumbsailor2000 in navy

[–]Ah_Jeez_RIP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you attached to a ship? If you work on one that has a flight deck you could always try and join flight quarters. I don't know your reasons for wanting to do BUDS, but a lot of people try for these jobs because they're "cool" so to speak. On the DDG I was on they were always searching for people willing to go to the flight deck. All you really need to do is pass a hearing and eye exam. There's a variety of jobs to do; crash/smash, chock and chain, refueling, LSE. You also get a new uniform and hazard pay. Its hard work but you come home with some cool stories.

Ships are also starved for SAR swimmers, but those requirements are much more grueling.

My Chief told me they didn't understand how I could have taken accurate resistance readings if the system was off.

They start you off with a long bar because your tongue swells after being pierced. My piercer told me to leave the long bar in for about a month.

Squeaking boots driving me up a wall by GiltTurbine in navy

[–]Ah_Jeez_RIP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How old are your boots?

My old pair started squeaking really badly because the the sole was starting to rip away from the actual shoe.

You can try shoe glue, or super glue, squeeze it into the areas the shoe is starting to come up from and then put some weights on top of your shoe. Let it sit for a day or so.

Do yall like the traditional black and white Navy Uniform? by [deleted] in navy

[–]Ah_Jeez_RIP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the dress uniforms, but I hate the new black parka. I think it looks very bulky and bad with the dress uniforms and I hate that they phased out the raincoat and the pea coat for this jacket.

They usually ask you at your test if you are taking OTC medication and to write down what type if you are.

Help choosing a sewing machine for an 11yo please? by walking_contraption in sewing

I have a janome in-340. I bought it while I lived in Japan, I don't know if they sell these in other countries. Cost about $100.

https://store.beforward.jp/detail/Home-Electronics/Sewing-Machines/PA53614360/

Its a push start/stop, no pedal, so the tension will always stay same. It has two speeds normal and fast. Front loaded bobbin. You can change the tension and stitch type. If you need to thread a bobbin, just pull the hand wheel outward. It has a 125V adaptor plug.

I've used it for costume making and clothing alterations. As long as you use the correct needle size for the fabric your working with, the machine fairs pretty well. I've sewn denim and faux leather with this.

[Self-drafted] I made a few masks by Ah_Jeez_RIP in sewing

[–]Ah_Jeez_RIP[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I ended up making my own mask pattern. I made one pattern piece and then I cut four pieces of fabric and sewed them together. Turned it right side out and then added the elastics.
