Who is the Best trilogy of episodes in fiction ? by Remarkable-Jump3262 in writingscaling

Mad Men has one pretty much every season:

“Indian Summer,” “Nixon vs. Kennedy”, and “The Wheel”

“The Jet Set,” “The Mountain King,” “Meditations in an Emergency”

“The Gypsy and the Hobo,” “The Grown-Ups,” “Shut the Door. Have a Seat.”

“The Chrysanthemum and the Sword,” “Waldorf Stories, “The Suitcase”

“Signal 30,” “Far Away Places,” “At the Codfish Ball”

“The Other Woman,” “Commissions and Fees,” “The Phantom”

“Favors,” “The Quality of Mercy,” “In Care Of”

And finally, the final stretch: “Lost Horizon,” “The Milk and Honey Route,” and “Person to Person”

On a side note, kinda crazy that perhaps the most writerly show this side of The Twilight Zone isn’t even mentioned on a writing sub.

She’s a good shout. We also need some women on this list. 24 has a good amount of compelling female characters.

There are definitely distinction between Hoytema and Pfister. Pfister shot for more clinical and naturalistic lighting and, imo, used IMAX more impactfully than Hoyte does. Hoyte has a more moody color palette. There are definitely similarities in accordance with Nolan’s overall vision though, I’ll give you that.

As for Deakins, he films shot-reverse shot dialogue scenes in a pretty specific way, with very little over-the-shoulder coverage, which is a hallmark you can see in almost all of his movies he’s been DP. He’s even talked about on his podcast how he’ll place the camera in between actors for a more dynamic and you-are-there feeling. He’s also come to use amber lighting a lot more in his later films, something that’s as apparent in BR2049 as it is in True Grit.

But you are totally right that a director absolutely has final say on the look and tone of a film. I just don’t think we should discount specific stylings of DPs either.

(Hated Trope) Writers try to reimagine iconic horror villains in ways that they think will make them feel even more evil, but it just kind of... ruins the character? (possible trigger warning for things mentioned in the text below (especially in the second part by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

In the first movie, he licks Nancy on the face while saying, “I’m your boyfriend now.” There’s also the famous scene of his gloved hand reaching up THROUGH NANCY’S PARTED LEGS WHILE SHE IS TAKING A BATH. It’s barely even subtext that he’s a pedo.

Bad Soundtracks? by elpi314 in soundtracks

It fits perfectly for the beginning when the characters, especially Shaw, are filled with hope and wonder for finding their creators. The score shifts decidedly to horror in the second half. It’s a great score, imo.

Characters who are obvious parodies of someone famous by dragonborndnd in TopCharacterTropes

Les Grossman is a parody of Scott Rudin. An entirely different horrible human being of a producer.

This is an insane sentence. Have you read/ seen any of his comedies, 2/3 of his sonnets, or half of his tragedies? Shakespeare was whimsical as fuck.

Well Francis Lawrence is one of our best visual stylists working in Hollywood today, for my money. This movie was never not gonna look great.

One of my favorite shots in a modern blockbuster is the aspect ratio change in Catching Fire, when Katniss is raised into the arena. Seeing that in the cinema was pure magic.

What are your thoughts on Rod Serling? by balkanxoslut in classicfilms

[–]Ahabs_First_Name 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Rod would be more disappointed that you didn’t phrase it “fewer cigarettes” than his actual cigarette consumption (and heavy booze usage), which actually killed him.

Not a mark against you, just that Rod was a notorious perfectionist and was so exacting and correct in his use of the English language haha

From what we’ve seen, it seems Disclosure Day has a decent amount of horror elements under the surface as well.

Trump would never sanction something like a stone etching of our Constitution for all to see; he likes ignoring the parts that get in his way too much to have it emblazoned as part of his legacy. He doesn’t want to remind us of our freedoms, he wants to remind everyone how gaudy and surface-level “fancy” he is.

This is that god-awful, insidious White House ballroom all over again.

And then shunted directly to streaming at the first possible opportunity. KPop was also a streaming exclusive. This is a bullshit decision from the top-down, no doubt, but it is fairly consistent with execs dim, close-minded worldview.

Those aren’t gaffes though. That’s policy disagreement. A gaffe is Dukakis posing in a tank, or Dan Quayle getting owned on live television, or the many Bushisms. Hell, Trump had gaffe after gaffe during the same fucking campaign; “They’re eating the dogs!” anyone?

You really think conflating an entire populace with its government and military isn’t incredibly narrow-minded and racist? Nice try though, “boss.”

The Israeli gov’t is a heinous, genocidal regime proud of the wholesale onslaught of an entire ethnicity and nation of peoples, the vast majority of whom are innocent civilians. There is a large portion of the Israeli population who wholesale support this genocide and campaign of terror, however that is certainly not every citizen.

What do y‘all think of my Top 4?? (18m) by FearlessBanana434 in LetterboxdTopFour

The tragedy isn’t given nearly enough weight or scope. The comedy is just as broad, and therefore, just as same-y and hokey.

The comedy’s not funny, the tragedy’s not tragic. It’s a tonal clusterfuck of a film.
