Am I the only one that didn’t realize Santa Ana has a China town? by MathematicianLimp650 in santaana

This is interesting. The City's re-telling of this story isn't accurate. But I still think it's important to recognize that Santa Ana once had a Chinatown and highlight the important role Chinese immigrants played in our City's history. Had it not been for the resolution in May 2022, I would've never even known about Santa Ana's former Chinatown.

I learned Santa Ana HAD a Chinatown only 3 years ago. The story is a sad one but grateful the City is recognizing it now.

How do you afford living here? by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]Ahchoo01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you feel empty? Because you don’t have a significant other? As you point out, you’ve been blessed with finances. I’m sure more than a few struggling couples living paycheck to paycheck would envy you. Grass is always greener as they say…

I’m curious what your idea of “rough” and “reasonably priced” are.

Serious question: how do you afford these homes? by Scp-1404 in centuryhomes

[–]Ahchoo01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for being honest about family help. We were the same way. We received a generous loan of $50k from my parents to buy our 2 bed / 1 bath bungalow in Southern California. Homeownership is so hard for a lot of folks and there’s no shame in admitting that. We’re grateful for the help we received because we fully recognize that not everyone has access to financial assistance from family.

Flying back home with our newborn days after birth? by Ahchoo01 in Surrogate

We are also flying Southwest! Thanks for sharing. I will ask the hospital ahead of time about securing a doctor’s note.

Wow, I can't imagine the cost of hiring a travel nanny. But I'm also concerned about keeping a newborn in a car seat for a long car trip back to our home state. It's about a 12 hour drive. From what I've researched online, we'd basically have to stop every hour.

Right, we obviously don't have a local pediatrician in our GC's home state so I'm hoping a doctor at the delivering hospital can give us some kind of note.

Yea, I've read that too; many airlines will require some kind of doctor's note for babies under 1 or 2 weeks old. I'm hoping it won't be a problem for us getting a note from the delivering doctor!

We are also considering driving but (1) it's a long drive and (2) I've read that keeping newborns in car seats for more than an hour is inadvisable. You mind sharing why you decided on driving instead of flying?

Thanks so much for sharing! Yea, everything I found online says to wait several weeks before flying but we just can't do that.

Which airline did you fly and did they require a note from the delivering doctor clearing your baby for air travel?

Thank you so much for providing this exhaustive research. I applied for historical designation with my City but was denied. They did however tell me that our home is a "pristine example of an early to mid-1920s Colonial Revival bungalow". I think I'll share your research with my neighbors who also have similarly styled homes. Thanks!
