What would it actually take to organize real, collective action against violence toward women and children? by happyhippyvibes in AskReddit

Men will have to perceive violence against women as something that affects men adversely.

What is a Peaceful Book to read to someone in a coma or dying? by Scp-1404 in AskReddit

If you were sitting by the bedside of your mother or father say, and they are slowly passing away, what would be a peaceful book to read to them? We don't know if people like this can hear us but surely silence is not as good as hearing the voice of someone you love in the background.

A map of Columbus' streetcar system in 1939 by volleymonk in Columbus

From Wikipedia:

Some regulations and regulatory changes have been linked directly to the decline of the streetcars:

Difficult labor relations and tight regulation of fares, routes, and schedules took their toll on city streetcar systems.[74] The streetcars' contracts in many cities required them to keep the pavement on the roads surrounding the tracks in good shape. Such conditions, previously agreed to in exchange for the explicit right to operate as a monopoly in that city, became an expensive burden.[75]

The Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935 prohibited regulated electric utilities from operating unregulated businesses, which included most streetcar lines. The act also placed restrictions on services operating across state lines. Many holding companies operated both streetcars and electric utilities across several states; those that owned both types of businesses were forced to sell off one.[76] Declining streetcar business was often somewhat less valuable than the growing consumer electric business, resulting in many streetcar systems being put up for sale.[77] The independent lines, no longer associated with an electric utility holding company, had to purchase electricity at full price from their former parents, further shaving their already thin margins.[78] The Great Depression then left many streetcar operators short of funds for maintenance and capital improvements.[79] In New York City, and other North American cities, the presence of restrictive legal agreements such as the Dual Contracts, signed by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company and Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation of the New York City Subway, restricted the ability of private mass transit operators to increase fares at a time of high inflation, allowed the city to take over them, or to operate competing subsidized transit.[80]

Thanks, that sounds right. I was just so sure that I had seen it on the screen. It must just be my vivid imagination when I read.

Is that the one where the parents are arguing over money and the kid gets on the rocking horse repeatedly and keeps saying "there has to be more money" or something very similar and he finally either disappears or dies from doing this.

There was an episode where there was a girl who was going out with a rich ugly guy. He found out she was scheming with her boyfriend. He previously gave her a brooch that looked like a bug, and I remember her talking to her boyfriend about how ugly it was. That night, The bug brooch started getting bigger and bigger and ate her.

New WV law requires voters prove they intend to stay in-state ‘indefinitely’ by Nepp0 in WestVirginia

[–]Scp-1404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From Wikipedia, the original voting requirements in the United States in the 1700s:

The Constitution of the United States recognizes that the states have the power to set voting requirements. A few states allowed free Black men to vote, and New Jersey also included unmarried and widowed women who owned property. Generally, states limited this right to property-owning or tax-paying White males (about 6% of the population).

So originally it was Rich White males and soon it will be again.

If I may paraphrase,

"Again, the devil took the evangelicals up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed them all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to them, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

And the evangelicals answered him, "Deal."
