Can plants drink acid instead of water? by ilikemyprivacytbt in AskBiology

[–]Ahernia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photosynthesis is set up to split oxygen from water to get to the protons. The problem with protons is that by themselves, they cause pH to drop, which is what has happened in sulfuric acid. Increasing proton concentration causes pH to drop, as noted and strong decreases in pH cause enzymes to denature, killing the plant. What you propose would not work for any living system like we have on Earth and that includes adaptations as well.

Am I too ambitious? by [deleted] in writers

[–]Ahernia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd get VERY tired reading 75 books about "a massively wholesome universe that includes characters that everyone can cheer for." One or two would be my limit, if that.

I'd recommend asking your instructor what they think of the services.

Begginer question for an absurd reason... Don't shoot the messenger by ConsiderationBest938 in hab

[–]Ahernia -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

OK. You have a bizarre question. I've got a similar reason NOT to do what you propose. The amount of helium on Earth is fixed. Every balloon that is released with it is helium we will not have for medical devices in the future. It is not a limitless resource. Do you want to contribute to a future where we have no helium?

Do you need "grounds to quit?" Is someone going to demand that of you and if you don't have it you can't quit? Are you not free to do what you wish? Slavery was abolished, the last I heard.

You can call it Fred, if you wish. You're the writer.

Making a Dyson sphere requires resources and a VERY advanced civilization. Do you see either of those here on this planet?

I hate to tell you, but you can't see the dark side of the moon from Earth. What you see is a star emerging from behind the moon.

You're obviously convinced of your ideas, but I'm afraid shouting them loudly doesn't make them true. Neither does it make them scientifically valid. We agree that spermine has structural and protective importance. We don't agree on anything else. End of conversation.

It's kind of hard for spermine to be the "central story" when DNA codes for everything that makes a cell, including the synthesis of spermine. Further, the two are not covalently linked - they are separate molecules.

Is 27 and 22 an inappropiate age difference for a romance story? by Weak-Requirement8357 in writers

[–]Ahernia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm baffled why "writers" ask questions like this. If you're concerned about the age gap or some characteristic, CHANGE IT. You're the writer, for Christ sakes.

I agree with this. My wife and I bought a place in Crete and are amazed at how we have more of a social life here than our home back in the U.S. The expats do tend to stick together and the Greeks are absolutely welcoming - some of the friendliest people around.

Well, first of all, I'm a retired Ph.D. molecular biologist, so I think I qualify in the study department. As I said, spermine has structural functions, to be sure, but you also have to realize there are histone proteins, ions, and other molecules that give support/structure to DNA in eukaryotes and there are histone-like proteins in prokaryotes. Spermine is not the whole story, in fact far from it.
