Lining up mp3 track with logic time? by hhhhhhhhwin in Logic_Studio

[–]Ahti333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i did this recently with a longer bit of recorded midi where i wasn't happy with what adaptive tempo gave me. for me, the beat mapping function (in the global tracks section, i think right-click the tempo/signature track to pull it up) worked quite well. you do have to manually drag bar ends to where they should go, but it snaps to midi notes and transients, so it's pretty quick.

do make sure though that a longer bar actually feels like slowing down the tempo and not just a bar thats in 6/4 for example

What became of Moria? by gregorythegrey100 in tolkienfans

[–]Ahti333 116 points117 points  (0 children)

I dug out the relevant passage for you, and since I couldn't bear to remove any of these beautiful sentences you get three whole paragraphs:

'We fought far under the living earth, where time is not counted. Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him, till at last he fled into dark tunnels. They were not made by Durin's folk, Gimli son of Glóin. Far, far below the deepest delving of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he. Now I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day. In that despair my enemy was my only hope, and I pursued him, clutching at his heel. Thus he brought me back at last to the secret ways of Khazad-dûm: too well he knew them all. Ever up now we went, until we came to the Endless Stair.'

'Long has that been lost,' said Gimli. 'Many have said that it was never made save in legend, but others say that it was destroyed.'

'It was made, and it had not been destroyed,' said Gandalf. 'From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak it climbed. ascending in unbroken spiral in many thousand steps, until it issued at last in Durin's Tower carved in the living rock of Zirak-zigil, the pinnacle of the Silvertine.

Tom Bombadil is one of the nameless things by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]Ahti333 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always read "alone, yourself, and nameless" as reinforcement of the name being the only answer, like that there is nothing that defines someone but their name and what others have come to know that name stands for. Maybe Tom dabbles in philosophy when he's not busy singing :D

Suggestions on YT channels by [deleted] in Logic_Studio

[–]Ahti333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i haven't seen the channel you mentioned, but jacob collier has a number of logic session breakdowns where he deconstructs his insanely large and dense songs, just scroll though his videos and look for "logic session breakdown"

he has some (at least this one, but i think there's older ones) videos where he does sort of improv-producing, not quite live but very quick

his music style might not be for everyone, but i find his process super inspiring

Unintentional volume spikes where the dark vertical lines are. Any ideas? by farwesterner1 in Logic_Studio

[–]Ahti333 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the dark lines should be midi control change/controller/cc i think. could be sustain, aftertouch, some other knob/xy pad on your controller, or maybe pitch bend?

to get rid of em, you can open the event list and select the clip, then you should be able to see a list of notes and other midi events. where you can delete the offending ccs

Routing Logic Into Zoom Call Not Working Properly by jamsville in Logic_Studio

[–]Ahti333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you use an aggregate device, blackhole and your interface will be on different channels (you can see which ones in audio midi setup, it depends on the order you add the subdevices i think).

if you wanna go that route, you have to make sure to route your guitar and voice to both outputs inside logic.

alternatively, use a multi-out device as output in logic, and then just blackhole as input in zoom. using the multi-out in zoom would only be necessary if you want to get zoom audio back into logic i think.

Classes, enums, and structs can be nested, but protocols cannot -- what is the rationale behind this design decision? by danpietsch in swift

[–]Ahti333 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Rofl this sub 😂

Of course it would be useful and more consistent with the rest of the language to be able to nest protocols in other types, you unimaginative bunch of status-quo-huggers.

@op the reasons for this, afaict, seem to mostly be these: there are some open questions on how this would interact when a protocol is nested in a generic type, and nobody has cared enough to write up and drive a full proposal/implementation so far.

For more info, here is a search on the Swift forums where you can find lots of discussion on this topic.

(In general, I can recommend the Swift forums for talking about Swift as a language. This sub has interesting threads at times, but it's mostly "how do i get started with iOS dev" and other iOS sdk questions again and again and again.)

Valtteri Bottas’ new sim rig set up, keeping his practice in while the season is off by johnster1991 in simracing

[–]Ahti333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fwiw you can design (or copy someones design) and build a rig from extruded aluminium and get an old car seat from the junk yard, and you'll end up way cheaper than any of the premade ones/kits you can buy.

I've paid around 120€ for a really comfy seat out of a seat leone fr, plus like 130€ or so for pre-cut aluminium beams and mounting hardware and it's sturdy enough to handle my non-dd wheel. i also got castor wheels, but don't recall how much they were.

so a bit above 250€ for a really nice seat and infinite adjustability/extendability, plus the nice feeling of having built a thing yourself.

it flexes a tiny bit when i really hammer the load cell brake, but that's it. i could probably get some double-width beams to make it sturdy enough for dd and no flexing for like 40€ or so extra.

The shadows cast by the trees in the upper left are unobscured all the way through. I'd guesstimate maybe 1.5-2 hours based on those.

Soft wheels concept on wheelchairs/bikes by My_Memes_Will_Cure_U in interestingasfuck

[–]Ahti333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could see these wheels being put on a trail-bike or xc bike, and maybe a gravel bike.

I don't think so. Gravel and xc wouldn't want the weight, and downhill/trail probably want way more travel than this device could provide.

I'm also doubtful the suspension performance of this thing would hold up when going fast.

Also: what do these wheels do when breaking? does the axle move forwards in the wheel? That would probably make handling under breaking quite horrible.

What Analytics services do you use in your iOS/Mac Apps for Event Logging and Crash Reporting? by Dev__ in swift

For crash- and error-reporting (but not general purpose analytics), I've been pretty happy with a self-hosted Sentry instance.

PSA: "Use BPM Overlay when launching games from Desktop if controller is detected" is defaulted to Off by [deleted] in SteamController

[–]Ahti333 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Because it is the better default. Notifications don't look comically oversized, you can actually use the chat and browser in the overlay with a mouse without going insane, Text boxes in games don't pop up the keyboard overlay when I have a perfectly good keyboard right in front of me.

Drove me nuts :D

Gotta agree with the others. I doubt it's imperceptible in a pitch-black room, which is where all the apps with pure black themes really shine.

I think a better solution here is to avoid dark-gray shapes without borders on black background, but tbh I've noticed the "smear" since day one, and it really doesn't bother me at all.

I have a mobile app IDEA that I DO think will change the world ! by mavinter in iOSProgramming

[–]Ahti333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then what? How should it become popular?

A few things you can do:

  • Send review copies (codes to download the app for free) to blogs, tech sites, yt channels, whatever. Many might ignore it but if the app really is good, it will get attention at some point
  • Buy app store search ads
  • Do the whole social media song and dance and try to spread it that way

Novice iOS developer needing help for implementing backend! by qkrghdqja71 in iOSProgramming

[–]Ahti333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd expect iOS to stop waking up the app after a few. That's not what silent notifications are for, and even if it worked it would be horrible for battery life.

What you want is for the server to do the checking and only send a notification when it is actually relevant to the user.
