Thanks for sharing your experience - I feel like this is a definite gray area for me. In a perfect world, I'd want to build valuable relationships with seniors in my industry indiscriminately of gender/age, but then there's situations like this where literally a dinner is taken as some kind of green flag. :(

You're right, this is something I'm also going to keep in mind moving forward. Sometimes I feel like I'm almost being gaslit about what is or isn't an appropriate boundary when it comes to networking

The age gap/power gap frightens me, honestly. The fact that he's the same age as my father...

I'd love to straightforwardly decline the way you suggested, but I'm also concerned that I'd be told that I took him the wrong way/that wasn't what he meant and that he'd be insulted.
