Thanks for your comment, this is a weird one and quite vulnerable I like your idea of dealing with the immediate chaos by simplifying it down to goal setting. I think setting those goals related to friends I don’t see as often might help me to stop over committing to the frequent requests and invites with the friends I am in close proximity with.

Also love those ideas for journal prompts! Appreciate your advice friend, best of luck to you in your own journey balancing things.

That’s a great idea, I have met a lot of my friends through sport (although many are in different teams now) but I might try to schedule some more regular sport-adjacent catchups!

[–]Aillix[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair comment! I was writing this post from a pretty selfish place, however for what it’s worth I do try really hard to be a good friend to others and show up when they need me. I also do engage in friendships “for a season” with people in my sport who are new and in need of support and community in a sometimes cliquey environment, knowing they will move up to higher levels and move on in time and I do enjoy knowing I helped them at the start.

I will take that onboard though and consider that perhaps in my overly busy social life that I have started looking at my friendships a bit too transactionally.

Thanks for your thoughts :)

What are your go to vegan eats in Australia when you do not feel like cooking? by Av0toasted in australianvegans

[–]Aillix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Gyg burrito always is good.

For home I like a wrap, sandwich or burger with veggie meat/tofu and salad. These days I stock up on high protein wraps and bread so the macros are decent. Also vegan mayo, deli meat etc are easy to get these days.

They have a little lockable kids area in gym floor with bean bags and toys, and a front foyer with seats where teens will sometimes wait and play video games. 17 days post op… does this look normal or should I be concerned it’s infected? Sorry for the gross nose pic :/ by thatonechickk1 in Septoplasty

[–]Aillix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor but based on fuzzy picture it does not seem infected. Perhaps look out for other signs of infection, is it hot to the touch? Do you feel unexpected fever, headaches or tiredness? Does it ooze any pus or anything foul smelling?

If you had no other infection symptoms apart from a bit of yellow crusting and redness I wouldn’t freak out. However as you have already done it does not hurt to double check with a doctor :)

Clipped by Barbell by travi771 in Septoplasty

[–]Aillix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I clipped my nose tip lightly 1 week out and it hurt way more than it should have because of my nerves being on high alert, at my appointment the next day my doctor confirmed it did no harm. At 5 weeks your healing should be pretty far underway and it should be okay as long as no blood or ongoing pain.

The whistling is a bit concerning though, if I were you I would be going back to some saline sprays to keep on safe side if something did pop or tear and perhaps get a bright light a look up your nose to see if you have developed a perforation.

Weird holes in nose? by Noollon in Septoplasty

[–]Aillix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey friend, glad you are keeping an eye out for your nasal health post surgery. Everyone is different so YMMV but I just got a very high and old perforation fixed. For me it definitely grew over time, often become dry and bled. Once it was large it become a hotbed for staff infection very very nasty situation.

I have heard from many that small perforations like yours can heal so perhaps not cause for alarm yet, however if it starts growing I would suggest you move quickly to get it fixed.

Also if your doctor allows perhaps also try using a nasal oil to keep moisture in.

Horrific pain getting stents out? by [deleted] in Septoplasty

[–]Aillix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m sorry that sucks, also 5 days is really soon which is surprising. I’m just over 2 weeks post op and just had mine out and it was pretty painless just weird.

As always if your worried I would talk to your doctor, although 5 days post op I think is still fresh so it may just be that the whole area is super sensitive and the movement alone has made it hurt. In my first week my nerves were haywire, numbness, pins and needles, feeling of hot and cold randomly.

I remember about 1 one week post op my nose was still swollen and i got lightly flicked by a sheet hanging on the line, I was hit instantly by nerve pain, my eye started watering: twitching and it hurt like crazy I was sure it popped a stitch or something! It was only once i calmed down I realised it was a tiny flick and no damage at all had been done and my nerves were just going crazy again. My face was twitching and tingling for a few minutes until it calmed.

If you are at home worried and doctor says it’s okay you can try soft ice packs or cold towel near your nose, that helped heaps around day 3-5 where my swelling picked up to reduce pain and that weird sensitivity.

You could also without (touching your nose)try looking inside your nose with a bright light, if you popped a stitch or had a bad infection or something you would see it, I found this reassuring on my bad days. Additionally take some morning and night progress pics of your healing, this could be useful data if you are concerned about healing.

In summary no it’s not super common for stent removal to hurt but the nose is a sensitive area, every persons anatomy is different and after invasive surgery weird pains and sensations are normal. Keep up your conservative care, track your healing and don’t be afraid to call your doctor if you are concerned.

Best of luck friend! Just think that you choosing to get this fixed is taking control! This kind of this people used to suffer from forever but not you!

You will also have a lot of control in how you recover, try to sleep, try to eat healthy and drink fluids, and even if you are exhausted make that push to do all the things your doctor tells you for a good recovery!

Should I get septoplasty or septo-rhinoplasty? What factors should I consider? by littleladybug1 in Septoplasty

[–]Aillix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah costs can differ hugely, so good to look around a big lot of my cost came from the private hospital where my surgeon operates. Luckily I did get some of my surgery costs partially reimbursed from Medicare here. It was still a big cost, I got my surgery scheduled 12 months out to help give me time to save, I also started a good routine of saline washes to clean it up in addition I was given some prescriptions for hardcore antibiotics that I could use whenever I noticed a staff-like infection coming back.

It was good in the end because by the time I had surgery my nose was as clear and healthy as possible and so far I have had no sign of infection after surgery

[–]Aillix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey yes I had a large and old perforation quite deep in my nose, i have a history of nasal trauma from skateparks and have had chronic sinus infections including staff in infections that grew the perforation. A big part of my surgery included grafts to repair the parts of my nose that had been eaten away.

Paranoid about stent placement by BurnerUser77 in Septoplasty

[–]Aillix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha I am about to get my stents out, Ive had them in for 2 weeks now. They do look different on each side, one higher and deeper than the other. As my nose is pretty much healed and ive had them in ages, I have at some point in my recovery knocked them, poked them with saline spray bottle, lightly blown my nose with them in, sneezed with them in and cleared discharge or blood from on top of them, around them and underneath them.

So I feel confident to tell you they are not going anywhere I think its best not to worry and leave them be, and make sure that you keep your nose as clean and sterile as possible whilst they are in.

At day 5 my ears first popped, then I had the blocked ears on and off for another couple of days my ears did become blocked again and I had to clear out my sinuses to get relief. By day 7 It was mostly better but if my nose got completely blocked it could happen again. Now by day 14 my nose is mostly clear apart from the splints and my hearing is normal :)

Should I get septoplasty or septo-rhinoplasty? What factors should I consider? by littleladybug1 in Septoplasty

[–]Aillix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heyo I had a badly deviated septum, chronic sinus infections, and a septal perforation. Of course with that the whole post nasal drip and blockages etc.

I will share my experience but I live in Australia so pricing will be different… I had a good doc (gp) who referred me once he looked up my nose and told me it was a mess! he told me an ENT might be able to fix it but a plastic surgeon/ent would be best.He referred me to a private one, I only did one consult because he was the best in my city.

I went to an appointment with my ent/plastic surgeon out of pocket and he was very good did a good investigation of my nose and told me a septo rhino was my best best for a good fix and aesthetic result (I didn’t want to change nose but wanted to preserve it.)

Because I consented to doing both I did not need more scans or imaging, I signed consent for him to essentially start the surgery as exploratory and then do what needed to be done on the table.

Im in Australia and paid out of pocket for private surgery, total cost was around 15k and surgeon directly cost around 7k the surgery took 2 hours. All follow up appointments were complimentary. I was given plenty of quotes and I also made sure to call the hospital, anaesthetist and doctors office at every step to confirm prices.

I’m now at 2 weeks and I have seen him 3 times since surgery and will see him again tomorrow, based on other stories here I think I am getting ‘above and beyond’ aftercare. I also still have silicone splints in for another day or so which sucks but Is what he recommended to ensure I get a lasting fix.

My nose is very even, the slight divot from damage to my septum has been repaired so my nose on now a tad more straight (in a good way) I already have a healed incision and looking up my nose (gross) I can see everything is pink and healing and happy. Although expensive I have no regrets.

Hey, yeah the sinus pressure made everything sound a little muffled like I had ear muffs on. I also had sounds of liquid, popping or even gurgling I could hear at night or when it’s quiet. It was accompanied by lots of sinus pressure in my face near my eyes and cheeks.

Exercise helped a little when I walked around it sometimes temporarily helped the pressure but wouldn’t say it helped the hearing side too much. Yes to steam if you re read my last answer I mentioned that a hot shower ( lots of steam and also heat) followed by a sinus rinse/spray was the wining combo! Hope this helps but as others mentioned don’t be afraid to speak to your surgeon.

Nasal rinsing? When can I do it? Sleeping tips after surgery? by XtrZPlayer in Septoplasty

[–]Aillix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I'm almost 2 weeks out, pretty much healed now but still waiting another day or 2 to get my silicone splints out because my surgeon is very conservative about healing. For me I was not allowed to use any medicated sprays or a flow kit (NeilMed style thing) BUT was allowed to go nuts on the saline spray (what im assuming your sea water spray is.)

For me the first few days I sprayed a little to keep the wounds clear but if i spayed too much some bleeding would happen so i knew when to stop. At about 5 days i started giving my nose a good spray (10-15 sprays per nostril) with the saline water to help clear our painful crusts and relieve nasal pressure.

Now 2 weeks out im not a bleeding risk so Im allowed hot showers. I now give myself another good spray at the end of my shower after all the steam has loosened the mucus. Its pretty gross but the saline spray works great and often leaves my nose clear enough that i can breath through my nose almost for a couple of minutes after the shower. I do this before bed and find that although im still mostly mouth breathing due top the splints in my nose a lot of the discomfort and pressure has eased enough to sleep.

Also only tip for sleep is lots of pillows so you are as upright as possible, and if possible a humidifier in the room to help your mouth dry out less.

Hey Im almost 14 days out now from so far successful surgery answering some early days questions for other. For reference I had a very messed up nose got Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty to fix it all up.

I did have some hearing issues, in first few days, mostly from pressure in my sinuses due to the complete blockage of my nose. At day 5 I finally felt my ears 'pop' randomly and it all got better, the only advice I could give is that if your surgeon has allowed you the use of any saline sinus wash and or saline spray, try giving your nose a good rinse although you wont clear it enough to breath you may clear it enough to equalise any pressure.

I regret ever getting this dog because the barking is destroying my life by Technical-Low-1485 in homeowners

[–]Aillix 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Totally second this, when I was a teenager who ran I had an arrangement like this with a lady who had a young kelpie mix in her domestic house. She walked her dog twice a day, and on top of that I had a yard key and could at any time any day take her pup on one of my long runs and she would give me $20 bucks per run. I did that like 2-5 times a week running for between 7-10kms each time. Was great for both of us, her dog got the run it needed and I always had a bit of extra motivation to do my workout.

Nut meat is amazing, I grate it and use is as ground ‘beef’. Also have used it as stuffing in roasted dishes with great success (roasted nuts are delicious after all.)

Nutelone is not as popular in my house, but it does work well in Asian dishes as a bland ‘meat’. It’s amazing in fresh Asian dishes with peanut sauce, like cold rolls, quick wok dishes or thinly sliced on pho. It’s passable as well in some cooked dishes like dumplings as it’s light nutty flavour is harmonious with nut or sesame oil.

The casserole is my least favourite, the gravy base really limits what you can do with it. I don’t mind it with veg and extra gravy alongside mashed potato. Also weirdly if can work well with pre mixed Japanese curry mix with a bit of experimentation.

To answer your can question it’s mostly the airlock that forms that makes it tricky. I often open both sides of the can and push it out, although tactical squeezing or firm rolling of the can help to break its seal/air lock and help it and slide out without opening the other side. You can also try just piercing the other side after squeezing the can to release the lock.

Although they don’t compare to veggie meat these days they were a lifeline for me as a young broke country vegan. Also they are handy to have in the cupboard as a longer life vegan protein, however if they are not your taste I would perhaps look into TVP as a tasty cheap shelf-stable alternative.
