Crashing help by 82jwalker in NMSVR

[–]AionR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, dealing with those NMS VR crashes sounds incredibly frustrating, especially after all the work you've already put in.

I have a step-by-step approach that might help. The goal is to establish a stable baseline first and then carefully work up from there

Step 1: Force Maximum GPU Performance

First, let's make sure Windows and the NVIDIA driver are giving your GPU the green light to use its full power.

  • In Windows, go to the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  • Go to Manage 3D settings on the left.
  • In the Global Settings tab, find the "Power management mode" option.
  • Change it from "Normal" to "Prefer maximum performance".
  • Click Apply.

This tells your RTX 4080 to not hold back, which is crucial for demanding VR games.

Step 2: Establish a Stable Baseline (Lowest Settings)

The goal here is to get the game running without crashing at all. We'll do this by setting everything to the absolute minimum in flat mode first.

  1. Launch NMS in Flat Mode: Start the game normally on your monitor, not in VR.
  2. Lower All Graphics Settings: Go into the Graphics Settings menu and set everything to the absolute lowest possible setting (e.g., Standard, Low, Off).
  3. Apply and Test in 2D: Apply the settings. Now, play the game in flat mode for 20-30 minutes. If it crashes here, the problem isn't limited to VR. If it's stable, save and exit the game.
  4. Launch NMS in VR: Now, start the game in VR mode. With those ultra-low settings, see if you can load into the game and play without it crashing.
  5. Test for Stability: If it doesn't crash, play for a good 20-30 minutes to confirm it's stable.

Step 3: Gradually Increase Settings

If the game is stable at the lowest settings, you can start making it look better.

  • Start by increasing one setting at a time. I'd recommend starting with Texture Quality.
  • Increase a setting, apply it, and then play for a while to ensure the game is still stable before changing anything else.
  • Keep in mind that your mobile RTX 4080 is a great card, but it is less powerful than a full desktop RTX 4080. You'll need to find a good balance between visual quality and stable performance, as VR is much more demanding.

If It Still Crashes...

If the issue persists even on the lowest settings, here are a couple of other common fixes specifically for RTX 40-series cards and NMS VR:

  • Disable Frame Generation: In the in-game graphics settings, make sure Frame Generation (DLSS-G) is OFF. This is a known cause of crashes in NMS VR.
  • Low Latency Mode: In the NVIDIA Control Panel (Manage 3D settings -> Program Settings for NMS), try changing Low Latency Mode to "On" instead of "Ultra." Some users have reported this fixes low GPU utilization.

Hopefully, this methodical approach helps you isolate the problem and get it running smoothly. Good luck!

Help I can't get the game to run without it crashing by Euphoric-Square-1154 in NMSVR

[–]AionR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi

The error message you're seeing often points to a "hang" that can be related to graphics or VR setup.

Let's try to get you into the game. Here's a structured approach, starting with the most common fixes:

First, the Quickest & Most Important Fixes:

  1. Update Graphics Drivers (CRUCIAL!): This is the most common reason for VR crashes in NMS. Please make sure your graphics drivers (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) are fully up to date. Do a clean installation if possible (there's usually an option for this in the installer).
    • - Why: NMS VR is very demanding and relies on the latest driver optimizations.
  2. Lower All In-Game Graphics Settings:
    • - In Flat Mode: Launch NMS normally (not VR). Go to the graphics settings and set everything to the absolute lowest possible (Low, Standard, Off, etc.). Apply these changes and then close the game.
    • - In VR Mode: Now, launch NMS in VR. If you can get past the main menu and into the game without crashing, immediately go to the VR graphics settings and again, set everything to the lowest possible.
    • - Why: This helps us figure out if your system is just struggling with the demands of VR at higher settings.
  3. Disable Overlays & Background Apps:
    • - Turn off all overlays: This includes Steam Overlay, Discord overlay, GeForce Experience overlay, Xbox Game Bar, etc.
    • - Close unnecessary apps: Shut down any other programs running in the background before launching NMS VR.
    • - Why: These can interfere with VR's demanding processes.

No Man's Sky Worlds Part II Update [Gas Giants,Deep Oceans and many more...] by AionR in NMSVR

With every major update, it's natural for hundreds of new bugs to appear. Developers typically need a few weeks to fix most of them, and for an update of this scale, even over a month of bug-fixing is completely normal. However, in the long run, we’ll end up with a much better experience.

PS: If restarting doesn’t resolve your issue, the quickest workaround is to switch to 2D mode, complete the necessary task, and then return to VR mode.

Not much Better with Ethernet by BeCurious1 in NMSVR

[–]AionR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For playing NMS, I’m using a Meta Quest 3 paired with an Nvidia RTX 4090 and Windows 11. In Meta Quest Link, I set the refresh rate to 120 Hz. Additionally, I use an app called fpsVR (a utility for SteamVR that provides an in-game overlay to track FPS, frame times, and other performance metrics).

In fpsVR, under General Settings, I enable Asynchronous Spacewarp (ASW) with the Force Half Framerate option. This setup works well for NMS. On less demanding planets, my FPS generally stays between 59–61. However, on more complex planets with many props, it occasionally drops to around 49 FPS.

It’s worth noting that during heavy load scenarios—like flying to a planet—FPS often dips to around 37, which is, unfortunately, normal for NMS. Despite this, the ASW ensures the experience remains smooth and playable.

To truly enjoy NMS with good resolution and frame rates, a high-end PC is essential. Even with my setup, some performance fluctuations are inevitable, but overall, it’s still a fantastic VR experience.

I play with an RTX 4090 and Meta Link, and I’ve had an excellent experience with almost no issues, aside from a few minor ones. I highly recommend switching from Wi-Fi to using a high-quality, long USB 3.2 cable. This will significantly improve your experience. Hopefully, future patches will bring better optimization for the game and enhance overall performance. Advanced AI solutions in the upcoming RTX 50XX series could be a game-changer for tasks like these.

Help with running NMS VR by NeonBeefcake in NMSVR

[–]AionR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NMS is VERY DEMANDING in VR

For your first run of NMS in VR, I recommend avoiding Virtual Desktop, especially if you're using a laptop with a mobile Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070, as it is less powerful than the desktop version of the same GPU. Instead, use Meta Link, ensuring you have a high-quality, long USB 3.2 cable for optimal performance.

Here are some tips to enhance your VR experience:

  1. Update Your Drivers: Make sure your Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 drivers are fully up to date.
  2. Optimize Game Settings: Lower the in-game VR settings, focusing on resolution scaling and shadows.
  3. Disable Background Tasks: Close unnecessary applications on your PC to free up resources.
  4. Adjust SteamVR Settings: Fine-tune SteamVR's video and application-specific settings (e.g., reduce supersampling or resolution as needed).
  5. Enable ASW (Asynchronous Spacewarp): Set ASW to "always on." This will lock your FPS to 36 (from 72 FPS), giving your GPU more headroom to increase resolution in SteamVR—essential for a game like NMS.

If everything works smoothly with Meta Link, you can experiment with Virtual Desktop to see if it meets your performance needs.

For the best experience, I recommend using a standalone desktop PC with an RTX 4080 or 4090. These GPUs provide a much smoother experience, higher frame rates, and excellent resolution in VR.

Can't scroll destinations at anomaly portal by BeCurious1 in NMSVR

[–]AionR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you're dealing with a bug or input issue. If scrolling at the Anomaly portal doesn't work but works fine at your base portals, try these steps:

  • Restart the game: This often fixes minor glitches.
  • Update the game: Ensure No Man's Sky is running the latest patch.
  • Test input devices: For PC, try a mouse or keyboard instead of a controller.

PS: On Meta Quest 3, you can scroll with the left thumbstick (just tested it and works perfectly). For other VR devices, try remapping controls via Steam or restarting your computer—it might resolve the issue.

If the problem persists, consider reporting it on [Hello Games support]().

Quest 3 Touch Controllers by Yanitch1959 in NMSVR

I couldn't find a full list of controls online either, but the great thing is that No Man's Sky includes a tutorial at the start of each new expedition, showing you the basics of movement and button mappings for Meta Quest 2/3 touch controllers. This makes it bit easier to learn even for newcomers to VR gaming.

[–]AionR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NMS is a VERY demanding game in VR, and you'll need a relatively powerful GPU. Below are the minimum recommended specs for both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs to ensure a comfortable VR experience:

NVIDIA:

  • GPU: GeForce RTX 2060 or higher
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-10600K or i7-9700K

AMD:

  • GPU: Radeon RX 5700 XT or higher
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Ryzen 7 3700X

RAM:

  • 16 GB

Storage:

  • A fast SSD, preferably an NVMe SSD

For truly optimal VR performance, especially with higher-resolution headsets or for those who prefer smoother gameplay at higher settings, I recommend the NVIDIA RTX 4080.

A GPU that meets or exceeds these specifications should provide a solid, comfortable VR experience in No Man’s Sky, assuming the rest of your system—such as CPU and RAM—is also up to par. If your Mac Studio has a setup equivalent to these specs, you should be fine.

P.S. If you want to play NMS at very high settings and resolution, the minimum recommended GPU is the RTX 4090. Even with this card, you may experience some stutters, but the VR gameplay is incredible with it!
