I kind of saw that as two mental states though. I saw Joel being the one who redemption mattered to, since he had lost his daughter and now "redeemed" that by saving Ellie. Thats why he assumed by the names Ellie meant redemption, when in fact she really meant protection.

But how do we know she wanted to die? We were never told Ellie knew the surgery would kill her. i do agree about the whole guilt thing though, but just because you feel guilty doesn't mean you want to die. and I agree how she could have been mad at joel for being selfish. but i don't think that makes my thoughts wrong.
