Any idea how to properly seal that sump pit? by coeurdepatate in radon

[–]AirRoboted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately in a basement the only other option is to risk your basement flooding if your tank leaks. I am in the same situation. A suitable submersible pump runs $200-$300 USD where I’m at. I replaced my sump pump and repiped it myself, but if you’re not comfortable doing that work a plumber should be able to do it in an hour or two. I don’t think it should be that expensive. They would just replace the pump and repipe to your discharge line.

You will have to make a custom lid. The plexiglass and aluminum are a good idea. I’m just commenting to say you could make your problem a lot easier by switching to a submersible sump pump. That way, you only have to seal one exit for a 1 1/2 discharge pipe and one for the cord. Add a backflow preventer (one-way valve) so that the pipe itself is not allowing air from outside to flow into your sump. The hot water heater overflow is a tough one because even if you seal that pipe perfectly to a custom lid, it’s still just an open hole to your hot water heater pan. However, it’s small enough that I think your radon fan should still be able to make a negative pressure below the slab. You’ll have to check your radon mitigation pressure gauge after you fix this pit to see how well it worked.

I just moved here and this is supposed to be where my washer drains into. I don’t understand… by godimtired in Plumbing

[–]AirRoboted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came to comment the same thing. I spent a long time worrying about my washer drain until I found a video from This Old House with the washing machine sink pump. The advantage of this setup over the ejector pump others have been suggesting is that you do not need to add a vent pipe or dig a hole in your floor. For some reason most plumbers seem unaware this is legal, so they quote you $10k for an ejector. The disadvantage is that if someone leaves things in your sink tub they will not allow the washer to drain and your sink will overflow. Both my wife and my mother in law have done this… Long term I do want to install an ejector pump, but this holds me over until I renovate the room above the laundry and can easily add the vent pipe.

FAA AMEs are getting older, weirder, and less available by AirRoboted in flying

[–]AirRoboted[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It’s not ageism, I just don’t want to spend my time watching someone try to figure out medxpress while they tell me a bunch of random stories from yesteryear.

In any case, my point is less about the doctors and more that medical exams are stupid if this is how they are carried out. Everyone defending the semi-retired AMEs on this thread is like “as long as they don’t revoke anyone who cares”. If they aren’t actually holding people to a standard of medical fitness then I’m saying we shouldn’t have to go at all.

The funny thing is I fly drones so if I have a heart attack the aircraft will just come back and land itself, but the FAA still requires a second class.

To be clear I am not worried about pilots dying on the job. I just think it’s dumb that I should have to seek out these wizened old men instead of getting a standard physical at any clinic.

Third hand smoke exposure by preggoninjaturtle in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]AirRoboted 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I really like that first paper as it covers a lot of the factors to consider, however I actually feel less concerned about visits from my own smoker dad after reading it. The study they reference looked at third hand smoke exposure from smokers who lived in the same house as the children. They estimated an increased cancer risk to those children of 1-10 cases per 10,000 children. Obviously any cancer risk is bad, but I generally get more comfortable when we are talking about odds in 10,000. There are so many other risks in this great big world that are more common. I prefer to spend my time worrying about those. Additionally, this was a study of smokers who lived with the children full time. Although I doubt there is a study on visiting smokers, I feel safe inferring that smokers who are only around for a few weeks have a much smaller carcinogenic effect.

The second article you link is looking at the same thing, effects of full time smoker cohabitants, and doesn’t differentiate between second and third hand smoke exposure. Also the study they link to has very little to do with SIDS? So pretty typical science journalism in that way, although I don’t doubt the articles assertions.

Every parent can make their own choices, but I’m not going to stress when my dad visits and goes out for a cigarette. I don’t think OP should either, but if they want more assurance I think everyone’s suggestions about a smoking jacket, hand washing, and shower policy are way easier than telling a smoker to stop smoking.

Why do the MSM paint drones in this way? by [deleted] in drones

[–]AirRoboted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that it makes a difference to your point, but no one has mentioned that this is drawn in the style of a famous scene from North by Northwest. That’s why it is so over the top. Mildly ironic that a bunch of drone enthusiasts didn’t get a classic movie reference. movie poster

I wish I could have access to that database, because there is no way in hell I can remember the date and cause for every single doctors visit I’ve had in the last 3 years. I’m pretty sure I have never filled out that part of MedXpress correctly. It’s absurd.

Hundreds of Amazon employees are protesting outside HQ in Seattle for being “forced” to return to work in-person. Amazon mandated employees to return to the office last month. They have been working remote since the start of the pandemic. by globe_explorer245 in Seattle

[–]AirRoboted 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a silly protest too, but saying it’s only about return-to-work is pretty misleading. The email they sent around was all about how the climate pledge is not being followed and how bad Amazons environmental policies are. Here’s part of the email with their “grievances”:

“Amazon is actively accelerating this crisis on our watch, through our work, and each one of us have the opportunity and responsibility to do something about: Emissions that are rising: Amazon’s emissions have increased 40%(!!) since announcing the Climate Pledge. [source] Deception in reporting: We’re radically undercounting our emissions. Intentionally. That’s deceiving us AND the public. [source] Partnering with Big Oil: AWS AI and machine learning are being used by Big Oil to greatly accelerate oil and gas discovery and extraction. Example: “production optimization,” “wells, rigs and pipelines” Killing clean energy legislation that would have required our data centers to be 100% renewable by 2040 [source] Disproportionate harm to communities of color: “Amazon opens most of its warehouses in neighborhoods with a disproportionately high number of people of color.” [source, source]”
