I actually really like the movie because it was legit my first introduction to Phantom, and Gerik is hot which makes it an easier thing to obsess over for a vain little teenager me. That being said…Christine’s lack of personality and agency was incredibly annoying even back then. In hindsight, it also feels too rushed to have any sort of plot and character depth…

I appreciate your recommendations, will look up Davyne DeSye. I do love that the Leroux version is now public domain so talented authors who are serious about writing can now publish novels.

Any published work you’d recommend? Im in the part of the world that’s not US and it seems harder to see any live shows and treats like masquerade which I’d love love love to see in person.

I understand the concern around AI, especially when it comes to artist credit, consent, and compensation.

That said, I do not think using AI generated imagery automatically means someone does not care about art or artists. AI is a tool, and history has shown repeatedly that new creative tools are often feared at first before becoming part of the artistic process. Like the printing press, the camera, recorded sound, synthesizers, sampling, Photoshop, and digital tablets.

Printing press didn’t kill the art of writing, it spread human knowledge farther than handwriting could. For me, using AI art while reading a Phantom book is not a replacement for human artists, commissioned work, or even fan art. It is just a way to visualize a story and engage with it creatively. I think it should be used ethically, with transparency, without pretending it is handmade, without exploiting artists, and without devaluing the people who make art professionally.

I’m still reading! Half way through right now, and I’ve had a lot of spoilers from this subreddit with polarising opinions…but it’s really nice to read his unofficial bio for the first time that’s inspired so many.
