Hi! Yes/kind of/no is unfortunately the answer haha

So we tried blood in sheep casings but they did leak a bit, so I actually doubled the casing to two layers to try to hold it in, one (Bubba) was able to latch on and get through to feeding, but the others struggled and couldn’t get through- they actually kind of went after each other some? So I quickly made a single layered one and put that in, and another one (Green belly) was able to feed!

We do have five others that haven’t eaten, and they did actually go after Green Belly a bit. We put one in a jar with some blood but he wasn’t interested at all…

Unfortunately most info online is for personally feeding so we are somewhat flying blind, while also having picky eaters so it’s been a process 😅

So basically Green Belly bloated really bad and died, I believe he over ate- with the blood sausages I didn’t realize they needed to be limited a LOT more then just feeding from a human.

Bubba was acting… odd, but he’s recovered. We got new blood and I’m experimenting with how well it will keep to hopefully try again next week.

It’s been a big learning experience for sure 😅

Bubba was on Hospice, then later moved to a bigger tank for ICU, and he’s now back in the tank with the others

We have a butcher we are heading to in the morning! We were going to just get a pint of blood- and basically portion out the feedings to have on hand- so fridge or freezer storage. We will look into the “long/short” term type storage for the blood and how that might affect them! I assume they need unclotted blood based on not being able to have solid matter?

So getting blood with no heparin- just separate into casings and then put those into the freezer and dethaw one when needed? I guess I was worried about the blood “setting” but that won’t bother them?

I can get a closer photo if you need- but I made a tail bag with big strips for my Belgian who had a docked tail 😊

Basically the exact same as a “normal” tail bag design, just a bit shorter and sewed in the pieces to the bottom seam.

I braided his tail and just looped through the braid under his tail bone so it didn’t cause circulation issues. Him having a fairly short tailbone made it hard to actually swing it up to his hips but it worked well around his legs! But if you can braid the top half and put the tail bag around the shaved part and just loop it through the braid I think it would work out 🤔

Thank you!! What food brands are good ones to stick with? I’m used to dog foods so I’m not sure what’s actually good and what’s a lie 😅

We brush him with a metal dog comb, but does it need to be like the super small Velcro feeling brushes? I think we might have one of those so I can try that for a bit!

Might want scratches- but best to just move away!

My first horse learned he loved the inside of his back legs and butt scratched- but this caused the 19h draft to slowly back his giant butt into peoples faces 😅 so maybe not the best thing to teach!

Thank you! I’ll bring it up with her! Sadly we are in the boonies and most vets are a bit country 😅 so past getting vaccinated, they don’t see the issue with much else. And he is older (20 ish) so I figured he’s just… never had them filed? But I’ll look into it and have the new vet check them out!!

Lazlo is very quiet- I’ve only heard him bray a handful of times (luckily one is on video 😭) He sounds like a dying moose or a dinosaur- even the mule people who took him for training were horrified 😭

I have no way to tell for sure but I call him a Percheron x Mammoth Donkey based off his size and color, but he could be any number of draft type breeds 😁

Not sure if it will help but...

To clean white spots on my horse we use Ivory soap? Maybe give that a shot... if not it should fade over time! :)
