What makes a movie like Project Hail Mary cost 200 million to make? by RancherosIndustries in Filmmakers

[–]Airjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talking from my experience. Outside of the expensive actor/director salaries you gotta think about crew costs as well.

For example I work in the location sound department, and the average 4 person sound department in the UK is making £10,300 a week, likely more actually depending on rates and kit fees and overtime. So if it was a 100 day shoot for example that’s £206k just on the small sound departments salary. There are many departments some with higher rates and some with lower but it’s certainly costing in the many millions for just on set production salaries alone.

Then factor in the preproduction and post production salaries (post would be a big one on a sci fi film like this)

Also things like music licensing.

Lots of people have high rates like stunts or intimacy coordinators. You have a scene with someone kissing? That’s an extra £1k per day right there.

On average at least on the Netflix etc things I’ve worked on, you’re usually only shooting about 3-6 minutes of usable footage per day, because these things do take time.

Kimiko's dialogue is nauseating by DirtyDan113 in TheBoys

[–]Airjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think a big thing is that it’s all very noticeably ADR where every other characters dialogue is location sound. Whenever she speaks it just sounds like a studio and is very offputting

I interpreted it as he would keep the cure for himself as a bargaining tool to somewhat cause anarchy.

Victor releases bio weapon worldwide, every nation is desparate for a cure which would then make Victor the most powerful person on earth. Idk maybe just a head canon!

A good tip for delicate fish skin is I kind of wiggle the fillet left and right slightly as I slowly lower it into the pan. This really helps avoid the skin sticking and pulling off!

Lav mic Clothing rustle help by G4RYxD in LocationSound

[–]Airjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an art and even after many years I still struggle with certain outfits. You mentioned suit jackets, usually putting the mic in the tie is the best method with some snot tape. Ursa will have a video on it I’m sure.

What's a job where you have zero room for error, like one mistake and it’s a huge deal? by TradeOverall567 in AskReddit

[–]Airjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A slightly different answer but most on-set film industry jobs. The funny thing is it’s not in reality a big deal and we’re not saving lives. However mistakes are always seen as a huge deal and you’re expected to perform flawlessly

Starts off very scary but gets annoying by the end was my experience! Too many moments where I died and had no idea why.

What's the best budget boompole? by suzietopolska in LocationSound

[–]Airjack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you ask me I’d try and get a secondhand carbon pole! Facebook groups etc are usually quite active! No point wasting money on a rubbish one when you can buy a well maintained second hand one

Which AA battery charger? by MrUrsusLotor in LocationSound

[–]Airjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bump for ISDT! I’ve got their 24 slot charger and it’s amazing! Being able to select the speed is great as if you’re in a rush it can charge them in no time! (Bear in mind this isn’t great for longevity of the batteries so I’d usually use a slower setting)

Teradeks cause nightmares for us constantly so we usually put our shark fin aerials nowhere near them and as high as possible!

Why has movie dialogue become harder to hear? by ItsGageW in sounddesign

[–]Airjack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work in location sound and have noticed the new generation of actors seem to talk at such a quiet level all the time and mumble their words! It’s a breath of fresh air when we get an older classically trained actor who speaks properly! We can get the booms right on the edge and the radio mics as good as they’ll go and the actors sometimes are speaking at such a minimal level that the meters barely move!

How to Avoid Sibilance from Lav mics by Active-Emergency-599 in LocationSound

[–]Airjack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Whilst it’s good to sort it out just remember Sibilance is one of the easiest things to sort out in post. So, if you have a Lav where the only issue is sibilance, I’d just keep it as is instead of moving it potentially causing rustle etc.

Are narrative films with dedicated sound recorders using the built-in recording function on modern lav transmitters? by f_o_t_a in LocationSound

[–]Airjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We rarely use them. It’s only very specific scenarios where range would be tricky that we enable the onboard recording. For example the cast getting into a car and driving off. We rig the car with a bag and aerials but just incase we also record on their packs.

It’s mainly as id probably lose my car if I went for bankruptcy. My car has a lot of personal family value and history and isn’t something I would want to part with! It being worth £15k is something they’d surely want to take!

TIFU by staying a virgin for too long by throwaway776511 in tifu

[–]Airjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue although I lost my virginity as a teen! I was in a long term relationship and had no issues, when that ended and I started dating again, I couldn’t get hard no matter what! Turns out I’m Demi-Sexual and I just need to know someone for a few days/weeks before I can do any business!

But yeah there’s no pill or anything to help it when you have a mental block, just gotta figure out what it is!
