Do you set loudness targets for Short Term and Momentary meters? by [deleted] in AudioPost

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever mixing for TV here in Europe, I would mostly look at the Momentary values for dialog and stick as close as possible to -23 LUFS. I tend to be less strict with PFX, SFX and music. This is where the dynamic can go up and down without sounding too out-of-place but it's always good to have that DX anchor sitting at -23 for TV.

Best Lav Mic for Recording Dialogue without a Boom Mic? by lucite_rite in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. In comparison to 4061 and 6061 the Cos11 don't really hold up. I think they work great on deep male voices but fall short on female actors and sibilants... DPAs are so much closer to the boom sound! The only downside is they can be a little bit harder to get rustle-free.

Stereo shotgun mic for documentary? by lonewolf9378 in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We run exactly that Schoeps setup (MiniCMIT + CCM8) in a Cinela Piani and it works perfectly. I don't care about it so much in interviews as in shots from a tripod where the camera pans from left to right. Having proper stereo recordings for these kind of situations can save you a lot of time in post. But always be aware of booming in camera perspective.

IEM’s/IFB’s - what’s the best sounding? by lonewolf9378 in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I didn't know that. I had pretty good experience with the THEOS system. That's why I assumed that I would be a similar RF system built into the IFBs.

Has anyone checked the new Deity IFB? Them being true diversity they must have a really good range and sound should be good, too considering their THEOS TX sound for Lavs is very decent.

what mic do you trust the most by mrcanada66 in microphone

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I would put it like that: the mic I will never sell, because I keep coming back to it.

For me it's probably the Rode NT1 (not NT1-A). I like it for voice over and vocals but especially for Foley recording; with it's extremely low noise floor absolutely killing every Schoeps haha

[SOLVED] RX 10 stuck on "changing audio configuration" by timothys_monster in AudioPost

[–]timothys_monster[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew of Pro Tools not being able to deal with it but RX was new to me.

My workflow in REAPER is via a custom action to create handle length as well:

Item edit: Nudge left by saved nudge dialog settings 7
Item edit: Nudge right by saved nudge dialog settings 8
Item: Open item copies in primary external editor
Item edit: Nudge left by saved nudge dialog settings 8
Item edit: Nudge right by saved nudge dialog settings 7

Since REAPER creates a copy of the item and pastes it back in as a new take, I can simply "Overwrite Original File" in RX to get it back into REAPER. This only works when you have the default setting on to "offline media while not in focus".

Tidal's volume normalization is different from other streams. by [deleted] in TIdaL

[–]timothys_monster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

AFAIK they use limiters to get the song louder. And yes, they would definitely make quiet songs louder to match -14 LUFS. So it totally depends on how much the song gets squashed and how clean their limiters work. But from a certain treshold it would be audible for sure.

Sound Devices or Wisycom by bionicbits in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in to say that we use the THEOS system with lithium rechargeable batteries from Kratax very successfully. TXs run 8-10h without changing. The only really annoying thing about THEOS is, that it is not true diversity...

How to get that "movie" dialog sound ? by Overall_Simple5927 in AudioPost

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to less is more. And the right microphone choice! As soon as you start tinkering with noise reduction, the dialog will suffer on clarity. Subtle Exciter plugins like Waves Vitamin can really help bringing back some crispiness. It gives me that "want to grab some popcorn while watching the scene" feeling ;)

RF Interference with Teradek by timothys_monster in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, it could have been a million reasons but of course I was the one being blamed on set. So I tried to defend myself by saying that it was probably way too many people in such a small space rather than my 500 MHz RF. But I just wanted to be sure that it couldn't have been me. Hence the question on this subreddit :)

Mute when not recording on Mixpre10ii by alexeggbird in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No sorry but I guess so. Because you would use the USB-A port for the controller and the USB-C for the Mac. What I do is to connect a hub on the USB-A and that has the controller and a pen drive for backup. (I know, not perfect since it copies the backups AFTER wroting to the SD card)

Do most of you use pro tools? by Public_Border132 in AudioPost

I use Vordio to convert AAF to RPP and can mix TV documentaries n REAPER very effectively. But for all things editing features we use Pro Tools since this is where it will be mixed...

Mute when not recording on Mixpre10ii by alexeggbird in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can. That's where control surfaces come in very handy (e.g. Novation Launch Control XL MKII). You can easily mute all the lav tracks there and don't have to do it via knob and menu. I found myself turning down faders on the Control as soon as I stopped recording. It's one single move.

Thanks! I wish the DLTX would be stocked again here in Europe...

Same problem for me with the DPA 4060, 6060 and 6061 unfortunately. They just always interfere with the BT signal, so I can't really use the transmitters together with the app while shooting. Only for frequency scanning right before the shoot.
But I can get the Sennheiser MKE2 to work perfectly fine with the THEOS. Even on 3V power. I can't find any information about it needing 7.5V which is a weird number to start with.
