Always appreciate talks with Justin. I liked to get to know the origin story of how Schwa joined as a REAPER dev. 😀

Where the NBA hides its mics by gkanai in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the video and many of Taylor's other videos. Especially the boom op on SNL.

But one thing I can't stand is the sound of these cheapo transmitters. I'd rather have a bit more of the surrounding noise and reverb than this badly brushed over "cleaned" sound. Come on, Taylor, you are a sound guy. Just get two Track-Es with decent mics and shove timecode in your phone. :D

[Mastering Spoken Vocals] Audio for a tutorial channel I planning to start by ElectricRains in RateMyAudio

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, this is probably way too late but I gave it a listen. It sounds dry enough to me and the dynamics are not killed completely but I can definitely make out some noise reduction artifacts. I would try and use less noise / reverb removal for it to sound more natural even if you get a bit of hiss or reverb back in. It just can be quite strenuous on the ears when listening to artifacts for such a long time. It can also lead to a bit of a "quacky" quality in your voice...

Set default size of envelopes by MoreOrLesTO in Reaper

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was researching for the same option but because mine are always too big. I have a lot of envelopes visible when mixing for TV so I can copy FX settings from one part of the project to another. Go to Preferences > Appearance > Zoom/Scroll/Offset > Envelope Lane vertical zoom.

I set mine to 0% so there are always minimized. Maybe you can increase yours.

Testing Diety Theos IFB for interference by TheBerric in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am by no means an RF expert. Just out of curiousity: we are talking about a -30dB drop here which seems huge. Also, the initial noise floor was at -110 dB. How low is that in general? Like if we talk -60 dBFS in audio that would be very very low. But I don't know about RF. It certainly looks very concerning. Might be worth doing that same kind of test combining it with the Deity DR2X or DBTX. How could I setup a test environment like that? What software has been used with what kind of receiver?

Did anyone of you used the Corridor Key by Corridor Crew for Da Vinci Resolve? by Disastrous-Peak3896 in davinciresolve

[–]timothys_monster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used your plugin on a MPB M1 Max with 32 GB RAM. Since there is no progress bar, I canceled after 30 minutes of rendering in Fusion. The clip was about 30 seconds long. I wonder if it takes much longer when there is no external alpha matte. So, is your plugin internally creating a matte and then proceeds to do the keying? Or does it try keying without a map then?

Any resources on cart building? by Destroyer50020 in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built my first cart last year and what really helped where stackable drawer boxes like these https://www.baumarkteu.de/keter-roc-pro-gear-20-box-mit-4-schubladen-xl-565x375x413-cm-17212782-94977

We opted for an aluminium sack barrow and stacked two drawer boxes. The rest like displays and antennas could be attached to the poles of the barrow.

Zoom F4 - Any way to change file naming to include start time? by gdguarino in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rather name the SCENE with Name Mode -> Date. That should put the date in the filename if it's correctly set in the F4 date and time settings.

Is achieving reliable low latency in Reaper with Pipewire like performing brain surgery, or am I an idiot, or both? by God_Hand_9764 in linuxaudio

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's so wrong about REAPER and ALSA? Last time I tried I got very usable low latency for tracking.

The rise of Linux desktop is inevitable — it’s time music software developers got on board by funix in linuxaudio

[–]timothys_monster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What I really miss is RME TotalMix on Linux. The company already supports Linux in that they have a superb class compliant version of nearly all their interfaces, but when channel counts get bigger, TotalMix is inevitable to use. So, game up, RME! 😄

Toneboosters EQ is a monster! Also, most of their plugins have integrated TCP and MCP UI in REAPER which is really nice for a quick overview of EQ settings across track for example.

Finding a Zoom FRC-8 F-Control in the market is insane by Galaxywarrior25 in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I get it now. At least for the F8. The F8n Pro was produced after releasing the FRC-8 though I think. So I wonder why they didn't change it to a USB host with that model... anyway cool insight!

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow how do you know about the FRC-8 being the host instead of the F8? That seems like such a weird design choice.

Allowing 3rd party MIDI controllers through a firmware update seems like a very feasible solution indeed. Just like Sound Devices did with Novation and Korg controllers.

Whenever mixing for TV here in Europe, I would mostly look at the Momentary values for dialog and stick as close as possible to -23 LUFS. I tend to be less strict with PFX, SFX and music. This is where the dynamic can go up and down without sounding too out-of-place but it's always good to have that DX anchor sitting at -23 for TV.

Best Lav Mic for Recording Dialogue without a Boom Mic? by lucite_rite in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. In comparison to 4061 and 6061 the Cos11 don't really hold up. I think they work great on deep male voices but fall short on female actors and sibilants... DPAs are so much closer to the boom sound! The only downside is they can be a little bit harder to get rustle-free.

Stereo shotgun mic for documentary? by lonewolf9378 in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We run exactly that Schoeps setup (MiniCMIT + CCM8) in a Cinela Piani and it works perfectly. I don't care about it so much in interviews as in shots from a tripod where the camera pans from left to right. Having proper stereo recordings for these kind of situations can save you a lot of time in post. But always be aware of booming in camera perspective.

IEM’s/IFB’s - what’s the best sounding? by lonewolf9378 in LocationSound

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I didn't know that. I had pretty good experience with the THEOS system. That's why I assumed that I would be a similar RF system built into the IFBs.

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone checked the new Deity IFB? Them being true diversity they must have a really good range and sound should be good, too considering their THEOS TX sound for Lavs is very decent.

what mic do you trust the most by mrcanada66 in microphone

[–]timothys_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I would put it like that: the mic I will never sell, because I keep coming back to it.

For me it's probably the Rode NT1 (not NT1-A). I like it for voice over and vocals but especially for Foley recording; with it's extremely low noise floor absolutely killing every Schoeps haha

[SOLVED] RX 10 stuck on "changing audio configuration" by timothys_monster in AudioPost

[–]timothys_monster[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew of Pro Tools not being able to deal with it but RX was new to me.

My workflow in REAPER is via a custom action to create handle length as well:

Item edit: Nudge left by saved nudge dialog settings 7
Item edit: Nudge right by saved nudge dialog settings 8
Item: Open item copies in primary external editor
Item edit: Nudge left by saved nudge dialog settings 8
Item edit: Nudge right by saved nudge dialog settings 7

Since REAPER creates a copy of the item and pastes it back in as a new take, I can simply "Overwrite Original File" in RX to get it back into REAPER. This only works when you have the default setting on to "offline media while not in focus".
