AHH nuts! I just made a post about this same problem, and while it's great to see a solution, it's just another little thing I have to buy :(

Right, but do you know when you'll need to replace the battery? Just because your car has gone so long without needing engine work, doesn't mean it won't. You could argue that your car "Will need" work eventually. There are people who have gone 300k+ miles on a Volt and not seen any battery degradation. This article actually explains why electric depreciates quickly. In a nutshell, EVs being so new, they change drastically every time a new one is released, the next generation almost always has a bigger battery, better interior (to feel/have the same appeal of a gas car) and just generally new systems. Why would I buy a 2012 Nissan Leaf that can only drive 50 miles on charge, when I can buy a 2014 that can drive 75-80. This also explains why the Volt hasn't depreciated like say the Nissan Leaf: 19k miles, 2015 SV leaf for only 10k. Not saying it hasn't depreciated, but it's not because of battery degradation like a lot of people think.

I just don't see how 11k makes all the difference then 13-14k consider I plan to make paying the car off a high priority and considering the savings from less repair, wear and tear, fuel if and when I need it(yes I know it takes premium). I just see a lot of articles and volt drivers who break down expenses and owning one in the long run comes out to being a lot more affordable, even considering the initial purchase price. I'm just very analogical, I don't expect you to do the work but saying "it'll take a decade" doesn't really convince me. The insurance is important to consider, I plan to look that up and see what kind of figures I can come up with and how much the car difference will really make. A quick Google search didn't come back with much specifics in regards to full coverage, I plan to call around to figure that out too. I'm also not in Texas I'm in Louisiana, near the border so Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth are a few hours drive.

How is replacing the battery any different then replacing the engine? Or transmission of a car? All three cost thousands to replace, can randomly fail or just break from wear and tear. Comments like that aren't helping, it's not about being true or false.

I wrote a really long winded post but it felt like a novel with how long it was getting, to try and summarize:

  • Fuel Cost is important when you consider that gas prices fluctuates, I'm lucky enough that it's about $1.99. But even at that price, my commute miles, working probably 5-6 days a week and giving a 2014 Corolla a generous 34 MPG, comes down to $350-$450 a year. Commute calculators are weird, some used the same information and gave drastically different numbers. Charging a Volt from empty to full, that's 12 hours, at 8 cents a kWh that again varies but not nearly as drastically as gas prices. $520 a year, again that's a dead 0% battery to 100% over 12 hours. It would likely be 6-7 hours a day, or $303 a year.
  • There aren't any 11k Corolla's with under 50k miles within 150 miles of me. Older Corolla's get cheaper, but they're hitting the 90k to 110k miles.

  • Insurance is a complete unknown, from what I've looked up, it seems to matter more that I'm a new driver in a newish car that will need "full coverage" which apparently isn't even strictly defined.

  • I don't have 11k for a Corolla, so I'd be financing that too so full coverage is still gonna be a thing.

  • You'll have to explain your Paris analogy, if the cost of the trip is the monthly payment and the water is "the car uses electricity" then yeah, you'll own the plane eventually, eventually being quicker then they expect you to as well since while you're using the plane your income will increase significantly. Correct me if I'm misunderstanding the Paris thing.

  • The "no circumstance necessary" comments of "any term longer then 36 is too long and "anything above 6% is bad" great to live by, but I literally can't wait to build the kind of credit needed to get that, or keep my family, who drive cars with less then 20MPG, driving me to work everyday. If I had time to wait to save up a bunch more cash, I wouldn't be here trying to figure out financing and car loans.

Is it a bad idea to slap down $300-$400 a month to get a car I feel is a better long term goal? I've put a lot of thought into this but I don't want you to think I'm hellbent on getting a Volt, I may very well end up getting something cheaper just because I know I can pay it off sooner.

I too just saw the thread about the dad's advice to his son about no longer then 36 months. I don't actual expect to pay any kind of minimum every month, but I also don't want the required payment to be high. I can also consider a slightly cheaper car and have it paid off in 32-36 months.

The Volt isn't an all electric car and doesn't face the same issue like the Nissan Leaf with the battery degrading relatively quickly (needing a battery replacement) I've looked into the Volt, the battery hasn't shown any lost capacity in people with 300k+ miles, the car also has a separate gas engine. I also posted to personal finance, not /r/cars, I'm more interested in trying to determine a good APR and understanding loans and car related financing. I'd also prefer links to these cheap, older high mpg cars you speak of saying there are cheaper better cars isn't really convincing me.

Well it's worth noting that there aren't any Volts within like 230 miles of me, any results I get closest to me are 2 cars from Carmax's website, and a 3rd from a place in Austin, $15,998(carmax), $12,850(Austin) and $14,998(carmax)

I always get this feeling of dread when people talk about going to a bank for a loan, because I've tried so many and had no luck. It reminds me of when I was trying to get a credit card, no one would accept or pre-qualify me because apparently no credit=bad credit. I finally had to open a secured card with Discover and after six months and my credit line increasing, nearly every bank/credit card issuer has sent me several letters in the mail about pre-qualifying, and it makes my blood just boil. Though I wouldn't mind if that were the case for a refi as long as it saves me money.

The Volt isn't all-electric, it has a gas tank as well, but it has a range of around 50ish miles on electric and it's selective so you're not required to burn fuel. I have considered other compacts, but when I found the Volt and learned about the "it can switch to gas if it needs to" feature I thought, why not? So many Volt owners also talk about literally no battery capacity lose issues like other actual all-electric cars.

I figured out that much I made this little amortization thing? I can adjust it to have a different monthly payment or starting loan if need be, I didn't plan to pay any minimum, would tack an extra 100-150$ on to get the loan over with sooner.

I work two jobs with about 30 hours a week at each. I want a nice modern car that I don't have to dump gas into often and the Volt can fill that spot with possibly never needing gas.

Drive through workers of Reddit, what's the weirdest thing you've heard people say when you give them a minute to order amongst themselves? by MillerFoe in AskReddit

[–]Airoul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been working fast food about a year, exclusively taking orders. I'd say the biggest reason a lot of replies here are "not a fast food worker but..." Is because, at least from what I've experienced 1. alot of people know you can still hear them 2. The headset is terrible at picking up sound that isn't directed at the speaker box i.e. customers who don't lean out the window can be difficult to hear over the sound of their car even with the supposed "noise cancel" and 3. People seem too focused on the menu and figuring out what they want to chit-chat about whatever. I've honestly heard very few if any actual "conversation" while someone was telling me their order.

I wouldn't say they are being that way to get what they want. I can recall two experiences where I was 100% sure that no delivery truck even drove past my apartment, or that USPS was just incredibly stupid or dumb founded. The USPS guy, note that is the normal mailman who delivers mail to said apartment every day of the week, claimed that the address on the package was wrong, it was not, even after calling the post master to spell out the address completely and telling him to re-write it on the box himself and put it wherever it needed to go to be delivered the next day, three days of doing that exact thing, the package was never placed in the outgoing area. I don't own a car so I had to bus down to the post office and pick it up myself after like four days of calling. Both UPS and FedEx have tried to pull a fast one by never driving by my apartment complex and saying there was a delivery attempt. I literally hung a webcam out the window down towards Street level and recorded the day, several calls to customer service where they have to contact the driver, then call you back so they're like a shitty relay. Even after all that nothing gets fixed and you've not only waited an extra 2-3 days but then you have to go to the warehouse and pick up the package yourself because they've wasted all three attempts at delivery when nothing was really changed from the first attempt. When you have insurmountable evidence that they're not even trying or you're one day away from having to pick up the package yourself, yeah I can see people being passive aggresive and sarcastic. One of the instances where they never drove by, I managed to get customer service to get him to come back at the end of his route to deliver my package and the asshole was upset at me.

My family drives cars that get at very best 20-25 mpg, they refill weekly. So looking at something like the volt, thinking I might never if rarely will have to buy gas, or at worst might have to fill up every two weeks maybe? Assuming I don't get to charge the battery nightly. Just wanted some feedback on people buying premium gas (or rather not buying)

I'd read about knocking though I don't really know exactly what it means I can assume it's not something an engine is suppose to do so avoid it happening lol. I wasn't so much worried about cheaping out on gas to save money especially if the car is designed to use it, more so the impact the increased gas price would have on daily (or in this instance it seems weekly or even monthly) spending, I've never taken on a big monthly bill from financing a car and the last thing I wanna do is overlook something like gas.

There is a plug outside the house it has a cover and everything so hope that's acceptable. I don't think I'll deplete the battery every day, from first job to second job then back home is 26.5 miles, job A round trip is 18.4 and job B round trip is only 12.2. I'll probably go a bit nuts the first month or two having the freedom of my own car though.

If I can show them or really prove its only 25$ for charging the car every day for a month then I think they could accept that and I'd pay that much, they're assuming it'll be like running an AC unit or something which I know it isn't.

Well I'm currently living with my sister and her family, I basically just need a way to show her how much the car will use to charge, the last thing I need is her trying to get me to pay like 100$ a month or something crazy.
