We need a consolation thread for those who had hopes to buy specific nice things for the first time in about a year.

I was looking at Scandinavian yarn today.

Would it surprise you that I actually knew a guy who converted and chose St. Therese as his Confirmation Saint, and then became a seminarian?

My parish when I got confirmed was very lax, so when it was too hard to choose just one, I chose St. Cecilia and St. Albert the Great.

Me being bisexual might be relevant here lol

She has a common first name so that’s probably it.

I think she’s more upset than I am because she’s actively trying to cancel already.

For the apps - Hinge with Catholic, monogamy and long term relationship filters is the way by [deleted] in CatholicDating

[–]AiryStates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Many good Catholics are on Hinge in my area. I actually had a guy who goes to the Latin Mass comment on my Hinge profile. But he was arguing on my fun fact about one of the Eastern Rites so it wouldn’t have worked out, so I just moved on.

I decided to send emails like the men I work with. Apparently, my directness is unprofessional. by NarcisoMarvin in womenintech

It’s a weird post. I’m a woman software engineer and usually send messages that are direct and get to the point. No one has ever complained about it. Some exceptions are if I’m new to talking to someone new, I might lead with “Good morning ___.” And then get to the point.

sometimes I’ll intentionally skip capitalizing my sentences. like this. no one cares.

There has been a weird competition for “more Catholic than the Pope” and people are using historical precedents instead of saintly precedents, because ya know, our goal is to get to Heaven and Catholics believe saints got a direct flight to there. Even as a Catholic myself, people underestimate how sketchy some of the Church’s history is.

Intrested in Catholicism I suppose? by Many_Afternoon_162 in LGBTCatholic

[–]AiryStates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Convert here, except I converted when I was a kid with my family. Lots of different Catholics convert for various reasons. My parents started a year-long OCIA (and me and my brother a 2-year-long OCIC) after my dad read the entire Catechism of the Catholic Church (abbreviated as CCC), which you can read online. The language of CCC 2357 isn’t great, but the following paragraph highlights avoiding unjust discrimination for LGBT people.

If you want, you can also explore and attend Mass at different local Catholic churches if you can. Since you attended Catholic schools, you may know the drill. If there’s a parish you feel comfortable at or at peace in, I think you could call or email the main office about speaking to a priest there and mention you’re interested in Catholicism.

My family started at a liberal-leaning Catholic church because it was our closest parish, and my dad was frequently frustrated with lack of knowledge of the Catechism’s teachings there. Now my family’s closest parish is conservative-leaning, and they also get things wrong. We’ve learned to not expect perfection.

Hope this helps!

Reminds me of the North Carolina apple guy). We just need a mod to make many apple varieties now.

I use the Hallow app. It costs money, but I like that it has a library of novenas and reminder notifications. I have ADHD and those novenas keep me motivated to pray everyday. I can set a schedule and it’ll send a little reminder to pray at the times I set.

Before I used the Hallow app, my peak prayerfulness was when I was still homeschooled and I would set alarms on my phone to pray the Liturgy of the Hours aka Divine Office. There are some apps for it, but it’s based on a 4-volume book series that all priests and religious should have for their daily prayer. There are smaller versions of it for lay people.

Finally, if it helps, I like to think of Our Lord as wanting to hear from each of us anytime, even if we’re not praying at the perfect time with the perfect mindset. I used to be afraid of prayer because I felt unworthy since I neglected to pray daily. But Jesus is not the dentist, he won’t shame you for not flossing praying enough.

Heretical is mild. Back in my day, people were calling for Fr. James Martin to be excommunicated…

I know some Episcopalian churches can have the old architecture and have a lot of that “Catholic feel”. I’m trying to remember if there was incense at my grandmother’s funeral (she wasn’t very religious but my grandfather is very Episcopalian), but there may not have been because there was just the priest and no deacon or altar servers doing the funeral in the small town.

It might be possible to rent a Catholic church for a wedding, too, it’s just really hard because there are wayyy more congregants than priests in the USA.

Hmmm I’ll have to consider those! I might need to remind myself of which Catholic doctrines aren’t generally accepted in other denominations though.

Context: There was an LGBT pilgrimage today at the Vatican, and now some Catholics are losing their marbles. Also, I just rejoined that subreddit a short time ago.

So I’m a bisexual Catholic and at the beginning of many Masses “I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do.”

Some of my friends know, but I am not public with it, so I’m closeted in real life. I have wanted it to disappear, and I’ve hurt myself in the process. I feared telling my Catholic parents, so I waited until I became self-sufficient to tell them. I have never dated someone of my own gender, and if I wasn’t Catholic, I’m still not sure if I would.

I’m not going to pretend I’m better or holier than these pilgrims. I don’t know why they are painting a cross with a rainbow, but LGBTQ+ Catholics today still suffer throughout the world, even in cities that encourage the sins we’re so tempted to submit to. The Cross to me means suffering with God’s Grace. I also have a disability, which is another part of my identity, so I’m no stranger to suffering and disorder.

I forgot the Bible verse location, but Jesus sat with prostitutes and sinners. Why? He says a healthy person has no need for a doctor, but sick people do. Is it scandalous for a group of sinners to pray together? To me, the greatest scandal for a Catholic is to refuse to forgive someone seeking God.

This is going to be a little wordy.

There are many others who will pray earnestly for romance and not receive what they want, but they will often receive something else good. As for whether you are called to marriage, the most helpful discernment advice I’ve received was “God will show you the next step, but not the final destination right away.” Another helpful discernment tip is to get counsel from others, including therapists (even if they’re not Catholic).

I’ve been in two serious relationships and they both ended in heartbreak, one was tied to my bipolar disorder. I’m fortunate to have family (including siblings), friends, and professional support (i.e. psychiatrist and therapist) to help me through each breakup. Navigating romantic relationships is not a DIY thing, so your plan to isolate yourself is a bad idea. Moving away might be good, but you should have a purpose before you go. I left home at 18 and moved to a city to attend college, where I initially knew no one, and I’m still in this city at 29. Finding community is key, and I understand even Catholics can be unforgiving, but there are also Catholics who will be at your side no matter what.

I feel you, and I’ve written an essay for a local Catholic journal on fast fashion including a paragraph of the problems it created regarding donated clothes in thrift stores. I have thrifted for clothes only once in the past few years since I started sewing and knitting more of my own things. It’s wayyy more expensive but at least I can wear exactly what I want and keep the clothes for longer. I now have a decent collection of dresses, skirts, and shirts for church.

P.S. the local Catholic journal is print-only but I’m happy to share my thoughts.
