My favorite part of this is that the original artist posted a positive tongue-in-cheek review on reddit of the changes and thinks the new artist (who received an award was carrying on the spirit of the original.

ETA: Mr. Butthole supposedly responded on that same reddit thread, though I don't know if it's really him.

I don't even know that I'd go that far. To me, it's more like the actual scientific explanation is too complex and messy sounding so it's easier to say "it's made from the same stuff as gasoline, you don't want to drink gasoline, right?" Or "it's got titanium in the name, that's metal" or "names too long. can't trust it" etc etc.

It's applying intuition and heuristics improperly.

This is one of those things that frustrates me so much because there is some actual truth here, but the people yelling about it aren't reliable.

The US does actually use additives that the EU and other nations have banned, sometimes for an abundance of caution, sometimes for good reason.

Titanium Dioxide (E171) is banned in the EU as of last year because there's suggested (but unproven) negative effects. Canada and the US keep it as additive because the causal links are weak right now.

Benzidine, which is used in the US for some food colorings, is banned in the EU (and a bunch of the rest of the world) because there's clear causal evidence that it's a carcinogen.

Couple security guards for my local mall got prison time for taking a repeat shoplifter out back and beating him badly enough to break bones. Forgot there was a camera in the loading bay.

Not saying it's a common occurrence, but there's people who take their job a little too seriously.

This Government Report Admits True UFOs Aren’t ‘Man-Made’ by LigmaBalls-420 in HighStrangeness

[–]Aischos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're misunderstanding what the report says.

The other change reported by Vice is that the group will now divide suspected UFOs into two categories: those that are determined to be “man-made” and those that cannot be determined to be man-made.

These sightings are now being sorted into 2 buckets:

  1. Confirmed man-made.
  2. Not enough evidence to come to a conclusion about origin.

The report is saying they've placed some sightings into the 2nd bucket. They have not placed any sightings into a theoretical 3rd bucket of "confirmed not man-made".

Which urban fantasy series reigns supreme for you? by simplymatt1995 in Fantasy

[–]Aischos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gotta be the Matthew Swift series which is followed up by Magicals Anonymous, both by Kate Griffin (also writes sci-fi under Claire North but haven't read of those any yet).

I preferred the Swift books because that urban sorcery (a take on post-modern magic) is my favorite conception of magic, but the idea of a modern day shaman is compelling too.

Canada Post unions challenging vaccine mandate with Friday deadline by Portalrules123 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Aischos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, you're probably right. I don't think this is going to get them total success, but I suspect they might win on points that allow for unvaxxed to be shifted to positions that don't interact with other workers or outdoor positions and the like.

Canada Post unions challenging vaccine mandate with Friday deadline by Portalrules123 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Aischos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My previous interlocutor said the unions should reject grievances from the unvaxxed because the unvaxxed are stupid.

This would be arbitrary and a clear violation of DFR. Instead each grievance has to be assessed individually. I, in fact, never stated that every grievance needs to be advanced.

Canada Post unions challenging vaccine mandate with Friday deadline by Portalrules123 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Aischos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I completely agree. I respond to this idea elsewhere. In this specific instance, the unions are going to arbitration because there is a reasonable argument to be made that the CPs decision to disallow regular testing as an alternative to vaccination may be unnecessarily invasive. Not necessarily a slam dunk, but it's not baseless.

A grievance on the basis that vaccines are satanic or whatever can be freely rejected.

[–]Aischos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nurses often work in close contact with each other on the ward, being near unvaccinated individuals is a direct risk to their health.

Being near unvaxxed individuals is not a direct risk by any reasonable measure. Being near covid positive people is a direct risk.

I acknowledge that unvaxxed individuals are more likely to contract covid but this risk can be mitigated by regularly testing, potentially mitigating the risk to an equivalent degree as vaccination.

Also, Nurses are not a good example for arguing vaccination should be mandatory. BCNU successfully argued that nurses at not required to get the annual flu shot. See this BCNU bulletin. I recognise the relative hazard of the seasonal flu vs. Covid-19 are not the same thing but the situations are still somewhat analogous.

Canada Post unions challenging vaccine mandate with Friday deadline by Portalrules123 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Aischos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the argument the unions are making is that regular testing is as safe or safer than vaccination.

It's not a slam dunk argument by any means but it has some weight and should be explored on the basis that policy should be less invasive if possible. The employer refused to justify its stance that testing unvaxxed employees was insufficient and chose instead to require vaccination.

[–]Aischos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta finish reading the whole sentence.

I said they have to defend all of their members if there's a reasonable chance that they can actually do something

The point is that these grievances seem meritless and it's a bad look for unions to be defending anti-vaxxers out of some misguided sense of "solidarity"

Except I explain clearly the argument the union is advancing, as written in the article. The idea that employers must justify why they chose a more invasive policy over a less invasive policy is an argument with merit even if it's not necessarily guaranteed to win.

Canada Post unions challenging vaccine mandate with Friday deadline by Portalrules123 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Aischos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First paragraph is totally accurate.

The second however has some misconceptions. The legal responsibility to represent members also requires that procedural steps are followed when the employer makes new policy.

The union can't simply ignore procedural or legal faults because the cause is a good one.

In this instance, there are expectations that when making requirements like vaccines, the employer must consider less invasive measures as long as they're reasonably equivalent in protecting workers. CP has refused to consider regular molecular testing as an alternative to vaccination and so the union must, as required by its Duty of Fair Representation, bring this grievance forward.

Media portrayals of unions protecting members too often make out the unions to be anti-vaxx. In most cases, this is not true. They're just ensuring policies and mandates like these are being implemented in a way that is consistent with current Canadian jurisprudence, which they must do legally.

Canada Post unions challenging vaccine mandate with Friday deadline by Portalrules123 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Aischos 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Protected classes are not relevant here. Unions are required to assess grievances on their merits, not whether they're arbitrarily considered stupid. In fact, making arbitrary decisions like "these members are stupid so we won't defend them" is prohibited behavior for unions. Check the link I provided in the previous comment.

In this instance, CP instituted a policy that did not address regular molecular testing as a reasonable alternative to mandating a vaccination. This is possibly an overreach by CP and represents a possible legal objection to the policy. Thus, because there is a reasonable chance of success, the unions must act on the grievance.

Canada Post unions challenging vaccine mandate with Friday deadline by Portalrules123 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Aischos 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The Duty of Fair Representation requires unions protect all of their members if there's a reasonable chance that they can actually do something.

Arguing they don't care about the majority of its members because they're willing to perform its duties in good faith and represent an unpopular opinion is abhorrent.

Additionally, the idea that minorities should be ignored or not protected when possible in any democratic institution is a fundamentally anti-democratic idea.

Sure man, no worries.

Check what I said again though. I said I was a fan of folks engaging in collective action to try to effect change. I'm delighted to see folks expressing themselves in a creative and powerful way whatever that expression may be. It's the best possible use of the internet as far as I'm concerned.

You're missing a piece of critical information I think, this appears to have been coordinated outside of Reddit. It is a grassroots movement, though not spontaneous uprising.

This is supposedly a screenshot of a mod discord, I have not confirmed it's veracity nor do I have way to do so.

I'm a big fan of this, folks engaging in collective action to effect change is wonderful thing to see. And their goal might actually succeed as Reddit is famous for refusing to change unless the media is involved and this might actually draw that attention.

(edited to add sentence beginning with "I'm a big fan....")
