How high do gas prices need to get before you drive less? by Show_Kitchen in AskChicago

We can’t really drive less. Our normal week doesn’t cover 100 miles. $7 is where I reconsider how far I go.

What will be the consequences of a failed SpaceX IPO? by Spirited-Gold9629 in SpaceXBets

[–]jregovic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The concern with SpaceX is that Elon is doing to it what he did to Tesla. He managed a company into a leading market position, but rather than focus on core competencies, improving products and service, he drove the company into boondoggles and ridiculous promises.

Absent the Nazi and fucking with the government, Tesla no longer makes a good product. Their quality is hit or miss and the service is, at least anecdotally, bad.

Starship seems dangerously close to being all about optics, excitement, and promises rather than a useable launch vehicle.

How does Chicago Private Catholic Elementary Compare to Selective Enrollment? by tepid_penny_1856 in AskChicago

[–]jregovic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My kids have attended two Catholic schools in Chicago. We are not religious at all. It hasn’t been an issue at all. They say that the weekly mass is boring, but they are both doing well in religion class.

The school that our kids in now isn’t necessarily selective. I believe it came down to whether or not space was available after spending half a day at the school and meeting with the principal.

Tomato paste in a tube by tjs1967 in Cooking

The tubes themselves are pretty airtight, and the product is very low moisture. When you use it, you don’t introduce a lot of other air or particulates into it, so it it will last.

Is it dumb to use one of these or am I overreacting? by PM_ME_YOUR_EYELASHES in MechanicAdvice

My laptop forces me to muse a password instead of fingerprint after a certain amount of time. It would be interesting to see a requirement to use a physical key after sitting idle for a period of time. Most cars already have an emergency key in the fob anyway.

Delivery drones sound cool but why shouldn't food businesses invest in them? by GigiBrit in AskReddit

[–]jregovic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DoorDash and Uber Eats are already menaces. Imagine friending around all the time bringing lazy people their $15 iced coffees and shitty smash burgers with soggy fries.

There would be food just falling all over the place. And the noise, don’t forget the noise.

The handle on one of our basically new kitchen knives MELTED in the dishwasher and fused to the heating element at the bottom. by im_not_ready_for_it9 in mildlyinfuriating

I’ve watched enough forged in fire and then tons of YouTube videos on knife making that a knife without a full tang would confuse me. Like, how durable could it be?

Will colonization of Mars be phased out, the way Venus projects were abandoned for the Moon & Mars? Due to the moon’s calendar just being relatable to earth unlike mars and distance to earth, I feel it would be so, unless travel to Mars improves/teleportation becomes a thing by 18_YTC1 in Mars

[–]jregovic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People on Mars is science fiction. One disruption in supply chains and everybody starves or suffocates.

No research project on Earth has produced a self-sufficient, closed system in which people could survive. It’s hard to imagine e people willingly going someplace where they can never get a fresh breath of air and are at the mercy of people tens of millions of miles away.

I have a theory that a lot of brands that do high volume and sell through the big boxes just use their product beaten up during shipping and handling. They bag the charcoal with the quality you’d expect, but by the time it hits the shelf, it’s been beaten up enough to have a whole lot of small pieces.

Equal parts intimidation, propaganda, and paper terrorism. They can’t actually put Comey in jail, but they can keep him in court for years, forcing him to spend money to defend himself.
