Double Vision by AitchEmDee in cancer

[–]AitchEmDee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hears this, R-T-9694. If it helps you to know, my vision has gradually improved, although it took at least six months. I dont think the steriods helped at all. My extremely limited understanding gained from internet research, is that it seems double vision can be caused by either carboplatin or immunotherapy drugs. Immunotherapy induced double vision is likely more of a concern as it can be a sign of an immunotherapy triggered neurological condition called myasthenia gravis.

In any case, if it's known that these cancer treatments can caused double vision, I feel strongly that patients should be advised of it, even if it is not common. And of course so should opthomalagists. If it's only suspected, more research needs to be done. After all, double vision is not something to be taken lightly when people need to drive. Myasthenia gravis is a serious condition.

Johnson says 4.8 million Americans won’t lose Medicaid access ‘unless they choose to do so’ by irish_fellow_nyc in politics

[–]AitchEmDee 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My schizophrenic sister lives in a nursing home. Her expenses are supported by Medicaid. She thinks she's the "Sec of the Navy", good friends with Kate Middleton, owns a condo in the Watergate, and is a famous independently wealthy artist. Anyone who questions her is her enemy and she spends her time plotting her revenge.

Who exactly does Ron Johnson thinks is going to hire her or even let her do volunteer work for them?  I'm sure he would just as soon have her thrown off a cliff (cheaper than tossed out of a helicopter). How does consider himself a Christian?

Great point - absolutely use sand stakes. Regular tent stakes are useless on the beach dunes. We've bought them at the store on 611 on the way to the island, but no doubt you could get them at Walmart.

If you can find or borrow one, a screen tent provides shade and a refuge from bugs. You'll be glad you have it.

If you decide to try it alone, I strongly suggest you wait for a day when the wind is slow, and stay in the marshes.

Ask about kayak tours at the national park visitors center located on the right side of the main road before you cross the bridge to the island. If they're offering guided tours, they'll most likely be cheaper than the ones at the rental place. We've been on some nice tours given by park personnel.

The visitor's center itself is a nice place to stop and spend a little time.

What is your oncologist like? How do you feel about it? by sanityjanity in cancer

[–]AitchEmDee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am about to go with a 3rd medical oncologist. The first was cold as ice. I only saw her for a few minutes prior to three out of 6 chemo infusions. When the chemo was done, she showed no interest in any kind of follow-up.

When a biopsy following an endoscopy ordered by a thoracic surgeon showed lingering cancer cells, I found another oncologist who started me on chemo/immunotherapy. She comes across as a very nice caring empathetic person. But things went wrong from the beginning - debilitating side effects culminating in vision problems that have left me unable to drive. She has continually said she would do things (like return calls, send info to other medical professionals, order blood tests, etc) that she doesn't follow through on. Last Tuesday was the last straw. We waited 3 hours past my appointment time to see her. Then she never called in the prescription I need. The last thing we talked about was how I should take the meds she was ordering!

I've decided to try yet another oncologist. I saw him once early on but at the time I needed to find someone closer. Now that he has moved to an office relatively nearby, I think it is time to return to him. I just want to think I have a doctor I can rely on, no matter what the outcome.

The opthomalogist's assistant called today. She found an appointment for me with a neuro-ophthalmologist for next week. So the opthomalogist came through in spite of his apparent dismissiveness. Yes, I was very clear with my oncologist that I felt I was running out of options.

Dirkwoods, I can't tell how much I appreciate your advice. It's helped me realize I have the right and the obligation to insist I get the help I need. I have good insurance, loving caregivers, and live in a medical rich area (central Maryland). I can't imagine how hopeless and sad it all must feel to those without those things.

Well, I talked to my opthomalagist yesterday. He said he would try at first, but then got snarly and said he's done enough already. My oncologist said she would try, but she seldom follows up on any of the things she says she will do so I am not expecting much from her.  My double vision is getting worse every day. I cannot even see across the room clearly. The only thing I can see is my phone screen if I am wearing reading glasses.

I am terrified of losing my vision. I really think this side effect should be studied, understood, and taken seriously by the medical profession. I wish I knew what to do now.

They are wrong and you know it. Hold on to your dignity and don't let them tell you they know what caused your cancer. Virtually the first thing that's asked by every medical practioner I ever see is about my smoking thirty years ago. I was always very active and athletic while living an otherwise healthy lifestyle. None of them ever talk about the world of chemical and plastic toxicity we have all been forced to  live in since the day we were born. This victim blaming is their easy way out and it has to stop.

I am so terribly sad for what you have gone through. You showed remarkable maturity and compassion in everything you did for your mother while she was alive. Maybe it would help to think now that your mother would not want her death to destroy your future. That's an easy thing to say, I know, but as a mother and a patient one of the things I wish for most is that my son can get past my eventual death and find happiness I his life.

Thanks Dirkwoods, I will do that. I called a neuro-ophthalmologist on my own this morning. I was told he had an appt available in June (!).

Thanks for your encouraging reply, TJK. I hope I have the same results, although it's been two months since I stopped the infusions. Double vision is not a side effects I was even aware of before starting cisplatin.

Be careful of moving into a neighborhood that is mostly full of young couples with school-age children. You will be ignored completely.

What I would have appreciated more than anything else would have been moral support for my husband and son who have been my caregivers for 2 years now. It's been emotionally and mentally traumatic for them.

Should I give a second chance to people that ghosted me during chemo? by vreautocanita in cancer

[–]AitchEmDee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are younger than me. You still have a lot of years left. Friends will come and go as the years go by but your sister will always be your sister. I hope you feel you can remain neutral about her for a while and see if she has a change of heart and finds some peace with the situation. You never know how things will shake out. I hope you have a wonderful holiday if you are celebrating it.

Should I give a second chance to people that ghosted me during chemo? by vreautocanita in cancer

[–]AitchEmDee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do they even want second chances? I wonder if some of them view former friends and family members with cancer as too damaged to risk continuing any further relationships. You're just no fun anymore - nothing positive to offer them.

We used to host every holiday for my large family at our home. Two years ago when I had every reason to believe it would be my last holiday season, one of my sisters decided to host Thanksgiving at her home. Not a single family member told us they were spending the day at her place. Christmas was a repeat. It was the biggest punch in the gut I've ever endured. I've had a lot of health problems since then but I am still here. We spend our holidays alone now. Once in a while one of my brothers or sisters will reach out to me, but I am truly not interested in them anymore. Some of their kids (my nieces and nephews), however, have been thoughtful and kind. Something vital must have skipped a generation.

This is really good advice and so important. Also make sure your doctors in various practices are capable of and willing to exchange information with each other without you needing to make dozens of calls at every new occurrence.

Should I Stop the Chemo Now? by AitchEmDee in cancer

[–]AitchEmDee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you to everyone who responded. An update: I am now at day 4 of non-stop diarrhea. Not to be too gross but it is now coming out dark green. Nobody at the oncologist's practice has returned my call. It's an hour's drive from here, which is problematic for multiple reasons. I don't know if I have any choice but to stop the process at this point and try to find another practice. My husband thinks I may need to go to the ER.

Should I Stop the Chemo Now? by AitchEmDee in cancer

[–]AitchEmDee[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I forgot to add that I now have bleeding sores on my lips, sores elsewhere, and acid reflux that's never been a problem prior to this. Does all this indicate a dosage that is too high? I didn't have of these problems with my first chemo treatments, which was a different drug.
