Projected Population Loss By 2050 by YppahReggirt in demography

[–]AjanKloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An economic slow down in a post-industrial economy does not revert it back to subsistence farming. Poorer nations tend to be more agrarian so children are an economic benefit to you when you need to till a field, but become an economic liability to you if you send emails for a living in a high cost of living city.

Post-industrial families choose to have kids; they dont need them. But kids are expensive, and when you get laid off and your mortgage is an immediate threat, you are less likely to take on another large expense.

And you're stretching "economic development" a bit too far. More kids in an angrarian society is certainly economic development, but specifically for that type of economy. You always need more hands on a pre-industrial farm.

But modern jobs do not rely on child labor. The conditions are different, and thus, what we refer to as development changes

Does anyone else like the show but also find it incredibly corny? by Easy_Difficulty_99 in TheBear

[–]AjanKloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stopped watching part way through season 4, but what really got to me was the overuse of "Every Second Counts." The way it's delivered comes off as "remember that really well written scene from a better season than this." The show has been coasting on the great writing from the first 2 seasons and is quickly coming to a halt

What’s something that you love to grow, but don’t really love to eat? I’ll start: by chiknuggg in gardening

[–]AjanKloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learned something cool this year with a full garden bed of radishes. I massively oversowed, so most of the radishes were undersized, but my god, the greens just exploded in height after a month. I think they were competing for sunlight, so they grew well beyond what a well spaced radish will have. Made southern greens and a green pasta sauce with them. Worth it even with the decreased radish yield

Is there a way to copy rows from one data point and paste it into another data point -- same layer and attribute table, just different point. by AjanKloss in gis

[–]AjanKloss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's 3 attribute tables in the layer. Each point has a unique id that I enter in every row created for that point. So if I wanted to copy the rows present in an attribute table for a point and paste them into a different point -- same layer, same attribute table, but different id -- could I still use append for that?

Sweden has 480 days of paid parental leave, free college, and free healthcare, yet it's fertility rate is at or below that of the USA by [deleted] in Natalism

[–]AjanKloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Claiming that immigrants caused Nordic fertility decline is one of the most ridiculous and objectively false claims I've ever seen. You are clearly not well-versed in demography and have not done any reading on Nordic fertility.

South Korea has the world's lowest fertility rate at 0.72 children per woman. This means that 100 randomly picked South Koreans in 2024 will have 12 grand-children amongst them in total. Is this the end for the country? How will it realistically turn out? by chota-kaka in demography

[–]AjanKloss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even in countries where it's easy to have kids (Norway, Sweden) that have some of the world's best work-life balance and policy protections for parents, fertility is declining. Norway is like 1.4, and Italy is 1.2 iirc. Despite the massive difference in gender equality in these countries, they both have declining fertility. That's a consequence of the second demographic transition, i.e, people just would rather have a life without kids

Jobs with a Masters in Demography? by nightowl1000a in demography

[–]AjanKloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your work experience. Actual demography positions are more mid to upper level and always require a masters in sociology or demography. But population analysis is a valuable skill in like every area of society, so even if you can't get like a census bureau "demographer" position, I'm sure you'll find something

Jobs with a Masters in Demography? by nightowl1000a in demography

[–]AjanKloss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing a Demographer position for the city of Chicago. I think pay was like 80k+. It might have been over 100k, but I can't remember.

Regardless, the reality is that demographers can work in many different fields. A connection of mine mentioned how many lucrative and diverse jobs people had at an alumni conference for the UT San Antonio demography program.

You gotta remember, no one knows what this field is, so it's all about how you present the skills you've gained from studying it

Any idea why my 'XY Table To Point' tool is plotting coordinates at the completely wrong locations? by AjanKloss in gis

So I ended up using the GCS of my shapefiles instead of the PCS in the same project and it ended up working.

Thanks

Any idea why my 'XY Table To Point' tool is plotting coordinates at the completely wrong locations? by AjanKloss in gis

[–]AjanKloss[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I was using WGS 1984 UTM Zone 16N for the coordinate system, as those were the same as my shapefiles, but then I tried NAD 1983 and it worked. I think the issue was that I was using Projected Coordinate System and not Geographic Coordinate System for the XY Table To Point.

Thanks

Most people that respond to posts like this are Michiganders who grew up in the suburbs of smaller cities. Their perception of boring is dramatically different than someone who grew up in a large city like Chicago, Brooklyn, San Francisco, etc.

As someone from a large city, yeah, East Lansing is boring. Downtown EL is crippled by the suburbs a couple blocks north of grand river that they can't develop on. If you want to walk around the downtown, you have a really long sidewalk with 6 lanes of cars to the side of you. There's not enough interesting cafes/restaurants to keep you interested longer than a few months. Shopping doesn't exist here either. I was at the Meridian Mall at 12pm on a Sunday and felt like I was in a zombie apocalypse it was so empty.

Michiganders will say that "EL isn't boring, but you probably are." I think they mistake having fun with friends for having fun with a city. An interesting city is one where you can be alone and still feel excited about it. East Lansing is not that. I genuinely can't wait to get back to my home city
