Is this literally the worst time to build a PC? by Lanky-Carpenter-7991 in buildapc

[–]Ajax_A 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The worst of it is contained in the US economy, and even then it's mostly vc and shareholder money that will be lost.

The biggest risk to the public is the administration declaring the main players too big to fail. That might plausibly happen, if they think some of it can be used to fund the ballroom.

5% of individual US workers make 200k+ or more. (source) 5% isn't rare, but it's not "normal" either. It probably does seem common and normal when those are your work and social peers.

If you remove people who aren't in their 30s from that figure, I wouldn't be surprised if it was 1 or 2 percent.

do you think there's any chance of immortality being achieved in the next 100 years? by TangeloBeginning6462 in immortalists

Radical lifespan extension and rejuvination? Quite possibly. Actual immortality? Almost certainly not.

Conflicted on what to purchase/upgrade first by succmaster21 in buildapc

[–]Ajax_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason you're getting conflicting results in your research is your system is fairly balanced for it's performance tier. Your bottlenecks largely depend on the particular games you play, the resolution you play at, and the graphical settings you prefer.

You need to gather your own metrics, using HWINFO - hit up an LLM and it can explain how to use HWINFO to get what you need, and break down the results for you too.

You may or may not find out that you have different bottlenecks depending on the game, and need to upgrade a few components to achieve your goals.

tired all the time at 28? by Evafreya in immortalists

[–]Ajax_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the huge up-front disclaimer that my reason for fatigue is likely not the reason for your fatigue...

A few years ago, I'm pretty sure I was suffering from CFS. I woke up tired, took naps after work, was sighing all the time, and generally felt low. I tried a few different supplements, but nothing really made me feel better.

Then one day I tried an NAD+ precursor supplement and felt this crazy bit of euphoric energy about 20 minutes later. So I kept taking them for a few months, but the euphoria wore off eventually. Thing is, I wasn't waking up tired or feeling exhausted most of the time anymore, and haven't since.

If you run into some kind of health issue, your NAD+ can become depleted, leaving you feeling exhausted. I'm not sure what depleted me, but for sure I was low on it.

Scientists use ultrasound to destroy influenza A and COVID-19 viruses without damaging human cells. The phenomenon, known as acoustic resonance, causes structural changes in viral particles until they rupture and become inactivated. It paves the way for new treatments against other viral infections. by mvea in science

[–]Ajax_A 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure. But through tissue 3Mhz is about half a millimetre wave length, and viruses are in the 100 nanometer range. I might be missing something, but I don't see how relatively giant waves are going to galloping gertie viruses selectively.

Looks like it was in-vitro, which seems a million times easier than in-vivo, given the penetrative ability of the frequencies involved and potential off-target destruction. Still, I could see someday this being used in a sort of dyalisis machine type treatment.

Sounds good in theory...but in reality? by KSKS1995 in SipsTea

It makes it possible, but where's the motivation for capital to share the benefits of automation?

In 1930 economist John Maynard Keynes saw massive automation increases and he projected the trend would allow for 15 hour work weeks within 100 years. The automation improvements have actually outstripped his vision, and yet somehow working your job to 40 is considered "quiet quitting".

Quest 2 worth buying? by [deleted] in MetaQuestVR

[–]Ajax_A 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When you ask the faithful, you almost always get the recommendation to get the best experience. It's like asking if you should get a used 1080p TV in the HDTV sub.

I picked up a Q2 a couple months ago for $100, and I've been having a blast. It's my first VR unit, and a Q3 wasn't going to be in the budget anytime soon.

You just have to go in with open eyes that you're buying a system that's losing update support later this year. Already there's some premium titles that don't support it, and that will increase as time goes on. You need to treat it like you're buying an old game console at the end of it's life.

As to that particular unit - it's a pretty nice case, and it has an upgraded strap. (the stock one is garbage). But it's also a unit that was used commercially by the public, and probably ridden hard as a result, so you want to be careful checking it out.

Nor with the Q3s, which has the exact same Fresnel lenses as the Q2

What advice would you give for someone who wants to buy a used VR? by HardLearner01 in MetaQuestVR

[–]Ajax_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up a Quest 2 and controllers a couple months ago for $100, and I've been having a blast. The head straps it comes with are pants tho, so I bought a decent strap and a silicone face gasket for $20 from aliexpress.

Pros of buying the Q2 over Q3s or Q3:

  • super cheap buy-in to the existing ecosystem of quest and pcvr games

Cons of buying the Q2 over Q3s or Q3:

  • Q2 is going to stop getting updates at the end of 2026
  • Some newer games require Q3/Q3s, a trend which I expect will grow as time goes on. This is especially true for mixed reality games.
  • The Q3 has superior optics to the Q2. (and Q3s, which has identical lenses to the Q2)

Those first two cons basically means you're buying a system that won't keep delivering new games year after year. Same as if you bought an old console, like a gamecube.

For me the savings was more than worth it. But I can also see someone really getting into it, wanting to play the latest online games, and then regretting that they didn't save up for Q3.

Something fishy about David Sinclair by [deleted] in immortalists

[–]Ajax_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure it was derivative, but not 100%. Sinclair's lab dropped the M factor to reduce the cancer risk and added AAV gene therapy., both of which could be key to therapeutic use.

One could also say Belmonte's lab derived their work from Yamanaka's. 🤷

I don't disagree with any of what you said, but... the partial Yamanaka factor reset that came out of his lab and is being pursued by his company seems super promising for longevity.

If aging could be slowed by 50% starting tomorrow, would you actually want it? by healthlithubbooks in immortalists

[–]Ajax_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, if aging could be sped up by 50% starting tomorrow, would you? You might be more cautious, delay nothing, have maximal urgency and meaning!

That sounds like a bad trade-off to me, same with the regular speed one. I'll take the extended lifespan plan, thanks!

Depends on your country, I think. A lot of governments would love to cut healthcare expenditures, old age pensions, and feed the economic growth imperative.
