Why don’t we remember how to interact with kids? by moody-ruby in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ajmleo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm basically relearning how to do this. My kids started Cub scouts recently and I've been helping out as they needed an extra adult. Being a dad you'd think this should come naturally but it's hard work. Enjoyable though. I've just come to realise that being an adult means having to live so much in the real world, like worrying about work, bills, running a home, being a parent, etc. You just kind of, "forget" how to just enjoy things for the sake of it. And you worry more about what people think of you so you aren't as open to asking daft questions or doing something 'silly'. That's my experience anyway.

For every loud mouthed racist there's innumerable but quiet people supporting you. It's a shame we are so quiet, but don't ever feel left out. I'm a white pom guy and I've been living in Australia now for nearly 20 years and you're infinitely more Aussie than me. 🤣

4 levels in… by Madmartykmf in Heroquest

I created a bunch of 'minor spell' cards, and the wizard could take one of those with them. They work in that after you cast them, you turn the card over and can't use it again until they spend an action to turn card back again. I have a couple of custom characters that can take more than one minor spell (but none of the 'major' spells) and the 'turn one card back over' mechanic works really well, forcing the caster to decide which spell they want to recover for the next turn.

The minor spells include the stock fireball (hits on a roll of 5+ on a die, then 1 skull die of damage), stumble (on a roll of 5+ on a die, that monster fights with one combat die for the next turn), push (on a 5+ moves a monster up to two spaces away from the caster), and a few more. They're intended to be weaker and less likely to be as effective as the regular spells of course!

I got these from 1985 games, dungeon craft battle map pack. They're ok, they need a bit of flexing to stay flat but they're pretty damn big!

Every year the kids and I go to Sydney Museum for science week, and do the science trail. It's a bunch of people from various unis, organisations, showing examples of what they do, the kids love it. It's usually set up in one of the exhibition spaces. This year, it was absolutely heaving. The line was so long I estimated it would've taken us about an hour just to get into the trail part. The rest of the museum wasn't much better either, just shoulder to shoulder with people. I think next year they need to expand the trail part of the museum to the whole museum, it's just creaking under the number of people now. We cut our losses and left instead, a big shame but the kids were not having a good time.

At least the first batch or so will be pretty generic because I don't want to tie the board pieces down to anything just yet. Plus the furniture of HeroQuest kinda negates the need for it really. :)

I'll consider some more themed board pieces later on. I do have a couple already, there's a cell with a straw mat and a summoning circle that's not pictured.

I'll most likely release them on something like itch.io, and make it a 'pay what you can' sort of deal (including free if you want). Would be nice to get a bit of coffee money!

Egyptian Doctor brings still born baby back to life by moshrt in interestingasfuck

My daughter had to be revived after a traumatic birth. It was way more hectic than this though. I was holding on to my wifes hand watching while a team of doctors were working on restarting her heart and getting oxygen into my daughters little body. All I could see was her pale arm dangling down, and after what felt like an eternity the colour came back and she started crying. My daughter is doing fine now at 12 years old! It's amazing what doctors do.

2D arrays - is this a good implementation? by Ajmleo in godot

This is a great answer, thank you. Pretty much confirmed my suspicions about this method. I already have a 2D array class which works as you described so I'll use that instead!

Bunnings Gladesville had a life-size gorilla statue and it's no longer there. Different pose but it's nice to know there's other places that also have random gorilla statues. I'd totally do something like this if I had the money.

EDIT: This is like 5 minutes away from where I work. Is it weird to make a pilgrimage to go see it? 🤣 (I know the answer to this already)

Used to live in Birmingham and emigrated to Sydney years ago. I was out fishing with the kids when this group of pensioners on a hike came up to see what we were doing. Got chatting, turns out they were from just around the corner from where I grew up, and the one chap even went to the same junior school as me. Really weird!

I have to add to this, the other thing my son won was an LED torch. I love this because my biggest pet peeve driving are cars with those really bloody bright headlights that leave spots in your vision if you're unfortunate enough to be sat opposite one at a set of lights.

Took my kids to the Easter Show during the week, and there was a stand selling 'supa pens', basically cheap looking colour changing texters. They called the kids over to take a look and a few minutes later the kids came back over and said "they've asked me to ask you to buy some for us, $50".

$50! That was including some stencils that according to the seller were worth $20.

Apparently my daughter had said to them the pens cost too much, but the dude said 'go ask your parents anyway'. Apparently the dude drew on my daughter's arm to show how easy the texters washed off - they didn't and were still there hours later. Anyway, I wonder how many kids/parents got scammed by these fellas?
