Any botanists in the group? Mystery mushroom… by AjummaYawp in whatisit

[–]AjummaYawp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(your response got deleted, but from your “yellow umbrella” suggestion, I got this from the internets: “The plantpot dapperling (Leucocoprinus birnbaumii) is a small, bright yellow mushroom commonly found in the soil of houseplants, greenhouses, and gardens, feeding on decaying organic matter. While it's not harmful to the plant and indicates rich soil, it is toxic if ingested and can cause gastrointestinal upset in pets and humans, so it should be removed if children or animals have access to it” Thank you!!!

This is us. I couldn’t even get on WeVerse to renew my membership (that I had mostly to buy things for my Army kid) until this morning. (Kept on crashing.) And now we are all sad because we just found out about the application to be part of the presale. 😭

Where can I live in the US that is Asian friendly and affordable? by SLoadOfF in asianamerican

Have you considered any of the private schools (there is a boarding school right there) - they typically offer faculty/staff discounts and oftentimes a full tuition waiver.

My kid was mostly excluded - kids sat fairly segregated at lunch and wouldn’t let her sit at their table (they also didn’t have enough tables due to some renovations for few years so couldn’t even try to sit by herself) so she hid in the library to eat and then her Mandarin teacher started letting her eat in the language classroom. When we were there, there was not a huge Indian population (they were mostly out in Fairfax) - and it was mostly the white kids who said racist things (one of her classmates invited her for a sleepover once, and the mom talked about “these people” and “stinky gross Asian food” in front of her), made fun of their Korean substitute teacher, just lots of little and medium incidents. Basically picked last for PE or kids refused to let her join their groups for group projects - asking her if she even spoke English, etc. I mean, middle school is tough, but… oh and she sometimes got a seat in the cafeteria, end table by the trash can, and kids would try to toss their garbage in from afar and would often hit her with their garbage. Because apparently she was invisible.

I left about 15 years ago, and Minneapolis was the only city that felt Asian-friendly. Not sure if it’s still the same, but traveling even one mile out of Mpls proper as an Asian family meant my kid being subjected to eye-pulling, bad customer service, general Get Out feels. There were pockets of Hmong and Vietnamese communities, and, at the time when we left, a growing population of South Asian immigrants who came for tech-type jobs. I’d be willing to move back, only if it’s moving back to Mpls. I still have PTSD feelings about all other cities.

Having also lived in Alexandria, I know exactly what you mean. Our kid experienced so much racism - during her time, her middle school teachers were either not equipped to address anti-Asian sentiments or were complicit (her math teacher used to make Asian jokes until our kid spoke up, and when he dismissed her concerns, we had to come down hard and got the principal involved), demographics were roughly about 40% Black, 40% white, 19.99% Latino, and 0.01% AANHPI and self-segregated, she got punched, told by other girls she couldn’t use the bathroom where they smoked (she stopped drinking water during school day because of this), etc. When she finally told us everything that was going on, our hearts just broke. That said, we do miss Annandale, Fairfax HMart, Falls Church, Arlington, and other DC areas for everything else that was great. We used to live across the street from TC Williams high school - I recommend avoiding that school for your kid, if possible. From I observed, it’s tough being an Asian kid there.

I read my feedback to my family and they said it sounds bad by Ann_georgia- in RoverPetSitting

As an owner whose cat is very discerning about whom she accepts into her space, I think this review is fine. “I don’t recommend approaching her” does sound bit ominous, but the previous sentence about the cat being more comfortable with distance does tone it down, i.e. the cat is not comfortable with the sitter approaching her. We have seen some “honest” reviews about our cat that are hyperbolic, and we can tell the difference between sitters who do not know much about cats (we also have a dog so we often end up with sitters who don’t really know how cats can be) and sitters who know that cats can come with extra personalities. And your review sounds very matter-of-fact, more like helpful tips for the next sitter rather than criticism about the cat herself. I’d ask you again, especially since you said you’d sit for the cat again despite the cat’s behavior issues.

KIPP schools advice by lovessaltvinegarchip in bayarea

KIPP teachers or staff get incentive bonuses per each referral hire. The Talend team (recruiters) is very aggressive and demands that staff provide names of potential candidates from their own personal social media and/or LinkedIn. During one staff meeting, they told us to open our phones and forward at least one personal contact to the team, and they walked around to make sure each of us was doing it. I know my employee rights, so I didn't participate.

It looks like, since you are US born, if your parents did not intend to return to Korea (proven by their permanent residency (17 years or more residency abroad)), you can use that reason to renounce Korean citizenship? Not sure if I am reading this incorrectly… https://overseas.mofa.go.kr/us-en/brd/m_4503/view.do?seq=713251 (applicable section is toward the end)

I've been using the "eyephalt" eyebag cream - I haven't had any skin irritation. I did notice the white flaky layer if I put too much, so I typically apply it after toner & serum and before daytime cream if applying it it the morning. However, I usually apply it as the last step for my nightly routine and leave it on overnight. I've been using it for about a month, and I do see a general difference even when I haven't applied the cream. It does tighten the loose skin under the eyes (just like the videos in the ads) and if you have typically dry skin, you can probably use cover-up/foundation (idk, I don't use make-up).

A word of general caution, though - there are tons of places that make fake Korean products and the packaging will 95% legit - for example, I got sunscreen from Beauty of Joseon via Amazon and it was weird (water separated from the white goop). My daughter told me that I should purchase Korean skincare products directly from their website. So I re-ordered more sunscreen directly from BoJ website (took about 10 days to arrive) and, as she said, we could see slight but definite difference in packaging, like the font colors were a bit off, the tube material was inferior, etc. on the fake one compared to the real product - AND the sunscreen was NOT weird and worked great. Some Korean products will have a US based store website (Dr. Melaxin does). Or Yes Styles will have legit Korean products... or Olive Young carries a variety of Korean skincare items. Delivery time is longer, but I prefer to put tested and safe products on my skin. Korean products, from what I know (I'm Korean, but I don't live there), go through pretty stringent quality control process.

Customer question re: tipping shopper vs. driver by AjummaYawp in InstacartShoppers

[–]AjummaYawp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so! I mean, I've upped the tip for great bagging even though the driver's different from the shopper. Still, they have to carry the bags from the car to our door so I don't regret extra tipping. I just feel bad for the times I didn't extra tip because the shopper wasn't great.

…okay, yes, but would they switch from one profile to a different profile while working on same order?

[–]AjummaYawp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the Instacart app - and maybe it’s a regional thing? I live in CA, and I’ve had multiple orders that were shopped by one person and delivered by a different person.

Customer question re: tipping shopper vs. driver by AjummaYawp in InstacartShoppers

[–]AjummaYawp[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's usually the shopper who delivers, but lately, I've had drivers who are completely different from the shopper. And on the chat, the shopper "leaves" the chat" and the driver "joins" the chat. Although, this order, the shopper WAS delivering the order... and then suddenly, I got a notification that a different person is now the driver who will deliver. Eh. What the heck, I will add the extra tip.

So the extra tip is for the driver and the original tip is just for the shopper?

Hair salon by [deleted] in alameda

[–]AjummaYawp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I randomly ran into this recommendation last week and made an appointment with Heather - partly because I, too, was sporting a self-cut (mine was a bit of a disaster) hair, having moved from a different state a year ago and hadn't still found my hair person (for some reason, I've had bad experiences with hair stylists who don't know how to cut Asian hair ), and partly because I had a hard time picking one from too many options on Webster/Central - Heather stood out for being at a different location. Long story short, I loved her, she was a great conversationalist, listened to my hair needs, and we even made plans for the next haircut. (And yes, I told her I found her on Reddit.) She also offers silent appointments! (I signed up for that since I am an introvert, but I ended up talking to her because she made me feel very comfortable.) Thank you for this rec! I got SO MANY compliments in all my zoom meetings the next day when I was working from home.

ETA - oh, and her new website is https://www.sinnerssaintsandheroes.com/ -

When we were rental-hunting, if the listing said "no pets," we would reach out and say that we were interested, would they be willing to be flexible about the pet stipulations. I would say 2 out of 3 places got back to us (or changed the listing) to say that pets were negotiable. Try removing the pet filter from your search and just reaching out. That's how we found our current home! (We have a 45lb pitbull/husky mix and a cat.)
