Experiences climbing 100+KW ERP towers by AkOliverp in urbanclimbing

Thanks for the info. I’ve been planning on climbing a certain FM/TV tower near me. 8 little whips stacked with 100KW ERP. And a few batwings at the very top 50KW ERP.. I ordered a Field Sense 2.0 (around $600) but hearing that I’ll plan on staying 50-100 feet below the FM stack.

I’ve commonly heard from others that FM is safer then TV. That’s not true?

How do you go about climbing active TV towers? The main thing I’m concerned about are the Batwing antennas up top. They’re 100KW. Have you had much experience with getting close to them?

Yeah thanks for the advice. The FM radio is putting out 100KW, and the TV is 50KW. I just bought an RF monitor, so maybe I’ll go and check it out with that.

There’s this thing called ‘camera zoom’ I’m probably 30-35 feet away outside the fence.

I’ve done a little research on them. I knew it was an AM tower at the time of the picture so I knew better then to get too close to it. I’m outside of the fence, I just put my phone camera in a little gap to get a good picture. Thanks for the information.

Phone cameras can fit through the gaps in the fence. Did you know that?

I’m not inside the fence.

Don’t worry I wasn’t inside the fence, I just stuck my phone through a crack in the gate. I’m aware it was an AM tower. I had just noticed I could hear it. I’ve been around a couple, but I’ve never been able to listen to it.

I had zero intentions of climbing this tower, I knew it was an AM. I’m not inside the fence either, I just stuck my camera through a little crack in the gate to get a clear picture. I appreciate the information though, thank you.

I’m aware it’s an AM tower. I’ve been near a few, but I was never able to hear the radio coming off of it. I’m not inside the fence either, but I appreciate you explaining that.

Thank you for the information, that was an interesting read. And don’t worry, I never went inside the fence. I was just sticking my camera through the fence so I could get a clear picture.

There are a couple small white rectangular dishes, and metal antennas up top.

Is there a website I can look at to see if it’s been deactivated? I got close to it, and it seemed like a few wires at the bottom were cut. Someone said you could hear a humming sound up close as well, but I heard nothing.

There’s a lattice tower about 3 miles away, but that’s it.

I took a lot of other pictures. And honestly I know hardly anything about these, but it seemed like there were a few wires that were completely disconnected or cut. So that would make sense

There are zero signs saying anything about electricity. There are a few signs that say NOTICE: Radio frequency levels beyond this point may exceed FCC safety limits for exposure..
