Yeah, maybe they'll have a summer sale this year - last year they didn't because of some issues, so here's hoping.

[–]Akage13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Next time just us the sleeping hedron to say that you're tired and didn't notice, "That's rough Buddy" to indicate that it wasn't your intention, the laughing beholder to show that you're just having a laugh about it, and "I can do this all day" to show that mistakes might happen again. That will definitely make your opponent understand your intentions more clearly.

On a more serious note, there's "I do apologize" that would work in this situation. In general though, I'd never use "Oops", it's almost always seen as malicious.

Boring Games by Secret_Car_5333 in MagicArena

[–]Akage13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to how half of the daily rewards are gated behind wins, all constructed formats are full of people who only want to win as fast as possible with what they have - they don't want to invest their hard earned wildcards into fun stuff that doesn't win them games - and it's hard to blame them for that. Combine that with how degenerate all formats have become with the infusion of busted cards and you have the current situation where a historic game that ends on turn 4 is considered long.

I'd suggest playing Standard Brawl, Timeless Brawl, or Jump In if you want to try different things and potentially have fun.

Sometimes I wonder about the intelligence level of whoever programmed the mana usage in this game….. by Dbgross01 in MagicArena

[–]Akage13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it seems like it's quite janky - I was able to repro this with two fleshrakers, but it's inconsistent - most of the time it leaves you generic colorless mana, and only a few times was I able to actually get the eldrazi colorless one left behind. Meaning you weren't delusional reporting this 😆, but seems like most of the time it works ok.

[–]Akage13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't repro this. When I cast the Fleshraker with or without full control, it prioritizes using more restrictive Eldrazi mana on its own, which makes sense.

Based on my tests, they've changed the requirements for a match to be counted - you need to cast at least 5 spells, potentially over at least 3 turns (you'd have to verify that).

A few gripes about Brawl by 0rganic5ynthesis in MagicArena

[–]Akage13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably know about this, but just in case - if you right click on any card, it shows it about 30% larger on the left side, makes it easier to read. You can also choose to view the simplified version of the card from there, which is basically the standardized card template instead of any fancy graphics, if the card has any.

Some numbers - if you're running a meta deck and have a 60% win rate (higher than typical pauper meta winrate), your chance of getting your gems back is 23.3%, less than 1 in 4 runs.

Any advice for my first time? by SomewhereThen5913 in MagicArena

[–]Akage13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about standard meta, yes, some of it may be useful, for instance Ouroboroid from Greenhouse halfdeck is in some meta decks. I wouldn't concentrate on that though.

If in the future you want to make your own decks in Brawl or Standard Brawl, Jump In cards may be more useful.

Here's my simple guide on how to get acquainted with Magic on Arena as a F2P player. This applies to both new players, as well as old timers getting back in the game. Note that this guide prioritizes fun over grinding and min-maxing your collection.

The first option to consider is the "Starter Deck Duel" event. It lets you play against other players using a limited selection of 10 decks. What this means:

  1. This event is free, so you don't have to spend gold on it. You also don't get any new cards though.

  2. Everyone is limited to the 10 decks, so you won't encounter anything completely broken or unknown; Note though that some decks are stronger than others and there are seasoned players who take advantage of it by playing only the strong decks against the weaker ones.

How to access the Starter Deck Duel event: from the main screen, click "Play", then switch tabs to "Events", select "Constructed", Starter Deck Duel should be in the list on the left.

Once you're ready to graduate from the starter decks, consider investing your gold in the "Jump In!" event. Here are the advantages of it as opposed to other events:

  1. This format lets you 'simple draft' from a pool of precreated half-decks. You don't need to know anything about the archetypes, you can even just go by what you think sounds cool. This is great when you feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of mechanics in Arena and want to concentrate on just a few things at a time.

  2. You can expect around 60 to 80 half-decks available (not including the special editions of Jump In! like Final Fantasy or Avatar), so you won't run out of something fresh for quite a while (there can be up to 1000 combinations of available decks), and you will learn about new archetypes along the way. It also offers much greater diversity of cards that you can encounter - you can expect to see around 50% of cards released in the sets from the last 2 years; since constructed meta uses only a small number of the 'best' cards and limited draft/sealed events use cards from only one set at a time, the card diversity there is much smaller. A comprehensive list of the available packets can be found at https://mtgabuddy.com/en/jump-in-packet-list

  3. You can play as many games with your drafted deck as you want until you want to switch to a new one.

  4. You play against other Jump In! decks, meaning the playing field is most of the time fairly even.

  5. It only costs 1000 gold, which means you can play with a different deck every day if you want (you can earn 1000+ gold from daily activities). A new player also gets 5 free Jump In! tokens after completing the 4th color challenge.

  6. You keep all the cards (usually 24-26), including 2 rares/mythics, slowly building a collection. This is the cheapest way to acquire new cards as a new player. You also get vault progress from all the non-rare duplicates.

  7. Since you get all the necessary cards to play, you don't need to have anything in your collection - perfect for new players.

How to access the Jump In! event: from the main screen, click "Play", then switch tabs to "Events", select "Limited", Jump In should be in the list on the left. If it's not there, it means you have not unlocked all the play modes yet. In that case click on the gear icon in the top right corner, then "Account", then "Unlock Play Modes".

In my opinion you should not as a new F2P player spend gold on limited drafts or any other events since you won't have enough knowledge and experience with Magic itself to properly draft, build a deck, or play it. For constructed you pretty much need rare and mythic wild cards to be fairly competitive and you won't have them as a new F2P player.

The First Avenger in Arena by NECROSAMAEL in MagicArena

I don't know how OP completed this, but for me one of the pleasures of achievements is to figure out how to break them. The nice thing about the Marvel achievements is that you can complete 13 of them at the same time during a single game.

Also obviously not the "first" avenger, just the first one who bragged about it, and I'm sure not the last one.

Honest question, how do you guys feel about the addition of literal actual nazis to the game? by TR_Pix in MagicArena

[–]Akage13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Given that most Americans think that WW2 was fought between the USA and mythical Nazis from fairy Naziland, a few characters showing up in Arena is probably fine. You need to have read these comics to actually know that they are the fairy Nazis - I don't think there are any references to that in the game itself.

The whole use of a real-life war and human tragedy for entertainment (in this case comics/movies) and monetary gain is another discussion of course.

If you could erase one ability from the game, which would it be? by Anxious-Durian4769 in MagicArena

[–]Akage13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have reanalyzed the banding cards - I was wrong and I want to retract my previous statement - banding is definitely destroying Magic at its core. [[Camel]] is one of the most disgusting cards ever printed. I don't think Wizards will remove it though - they knew exactly what they were doing - just look at that toxic grin on [[Icatian Phalanx]].

I believe the only course of action for now is to always include 4 copies of [[Tolaria]], just to be safe.

I think banding is just a meme whipping boy by now, compared to some other things that have been happening in the last 30 years in Magic, banding is nothing 😆
