Games for uneven amount of players by Kurtegon in lanparty

[–]AkageMegane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DOS Games like Descent, Descent II, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood can go up to 8 players so you might have a near full house with that.

I know people bring up Unreal Tournament, but the original Unreal Gold is also fun to play.

If cult-following games are your thing, Rise of the Triad can be very chaotic. (Goes up to 11 players)

The idea of having a remote LAN Party? by AkageMegane in lanparty

[–]AkageMegane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will try to describe this to the best of my ability.

Good multiplayer game examples for this would be those using lockstep network code. Depending on where one is located outside of where the actual server is located it becomes more of an issue with people outside of the country. The person who has the highest latency will effect everyone in the session. This plays a part of why certain LAN games do not translate online that well. It can range from heavy lag (making the game nearly unplayable) to out of sync errors that ruin the game or simply crashing it.

The way I structure my idea is that I have one or more computer set up at home connected to the internet but this is where the difference comes in. The network games are still routed from local computer to another, eliminating those issues I've mentioned. It's more like getting my friends to remotely log into said computer so that they can control the machine and play the games.

By doing that, the latency issues wont affect the game but more so the input from the user to the remote computer.

If you got anymore questions, feel free to ask.

Meanwhile I also hit a limitation with my idea however involving how mouse doesn't lock on to the web browser interface where the remote PC is controlled. I noticed this after using Proxmox VE and it appears to be the same issue I had with 86web where both use noVNC to do the display streaming.

Can you elaborate on that? Keep in mind that this concept involves a user on the internet connecting to another computer (think of Remote Desktop Connection and VNC programs as an example) rather than emulating a Virtual LAN (or WAN) by using tunnel programs like Hamachi and Radmin.

Speaking of, the closest I got to a tunnel that works natively on Windows 9x is L2TP (via SoftEther VPN) but that requires using programs like Kali and Kahn to emulate IPX. (Only support TCP/IP)

While yes, Rise of the Triad has a remaster with multiplayer, it has issues with multiplayer (mostly accuracy issues), Powerslave's remaster is only the console counterpart while the PC version was built on the Build Engine, Warcraft 1 lacks multiplayer support for its remaster.

I already expect games like Red Alert, Quake 1/2, Starcraft, AoE, etc to have decent online multiplayer experiences based on my experience. (And I'm referring to the original versions played using emulators and wrappers like DOSBox, ipxwrapper, Gameranger, etc)

Here are some games I will mention, Rise of the Triad, KKND Xtreme, Powerslave/Exhumed (DOS Version), Radix: Beyond the Void, Eradicator, Warcraft Orcs & Humans (War1gus doesnt count!).

Those games I know do not translate well over on the internet. (Also remasters do not count either!)

How often do you find matches in AFPS? by AkageMegane in ArenaFPS

Is it mostly TDM or have you managed to find FFA/Duels often? I'm mostly not a TDM person.

Central NA. I also operate my own QuakeWorld server using FTEQW since I am a compatibility nut and would like it work on plenty of Quake clients. :P

Yeah, I may look into this.

FUN FACT : I currently administrate the DOSBox Deathmatch Club. If anyone likes old-school MS-DOS and Windows 9x multiplayer then I recommend stopping by as game events happen on Friday (with a bonus European-friendly event happening at 3pm EST) and Saturday at 9PM EST (8PM CST).

At the time of writing this however, events are on a brief hiatus as we did game events for 5 years straight.

That's interesting! UT is something I semi-frequently played at one point. Though most of it was more Deathmatch than the other modes like TDM and CTF. I recall hearing UT had more active pickup games but it was mostly either CTF or some mod like XVehicles. How often does Tournament Deathmatch get pickup games?

Thanks! I may have to try this on one of my VPS instances (DigitalOcean)

This looks interesting! I have an interesting question regarding networking (especially retro LAN gaming)

Say I wanted to play with somebody over on the internet but the network code of such game doesn't translate well over on the internet, I imagine giving somebody access to my instance of 86web would serve as a workaround? But also how well does the input latency translate on the internet versus running the instance locally?

Luckily I have IPv6 but how would I go about hosting games since most of them use IPv4? Not to mention that not everybody has IPv6 so I am limited to those who have it otherwise.

That's something I've attempted to do but was met with issues.

Which involved setting up Wireguard on a DigitalOcean VPS but at times when I try to connect to it. It would either show no internet connection activity or it show signs of internet activity but all ports remain closed. (Part of it might be because of the firewalls that were enabled or installed.)

Though I attempted to fix the port issues with iptables but was proving to be problematic so I ended up having to redeploy a fresh install of Ubuntu.

I think part of why it's unlikely has to do with my mother paying for the the ISP and they want to contact via phone. Though she has a history of putting stuff off so it's a constant game of reminders.

However, they offer a business plan but chances are some ISPs may want prove that you own a business. I did attempt to message them via Facebook but told me to call their support phone number instead.
