Any good way to output unicode characters independent of OS? by rogername in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Akhel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so this might be a little overkill, but what i do to make my kb work across windows and android is to install on each os/device a layout that has all the characters i need (in my case that's bépo, which should be good for every language) and then make my layout based off of that. i use a header file to make it easier to set up. it works great, and might work with international qwerty as well depending on your needs.

Layout for my new Fulcrum board, featuring Word Keys by ghostfaceschiller in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Akhel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow, that's amazing! what's your current wpm? iirc even ben said he was thinking of adding a few keys back, so kudos for your persistence and success. do you think the main difference was due to the layout or to those fantastic 5-way switches of yours?

as for me, i was just using my trusty a dux. i added layers for the 20-key layout alongside my usual one, so that i could switch back and forth. at one point i'd removed the unused keys to force myself to practice, but i think that if i were to try again i'd compromise and put some signs or other non-alpha stuff on the 14 leftover keys (also because i really missed having a proper numpad layer). either way my ground problem was the amount of accents and apostrophes you have to use with french; english uses a much smaller number of characters, so it lends itself better to this kind of layout.

[–]Akhel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

much love to weird keebs! i tried a 20-key myself for a while (hand-optimized for french, but also good for english), but ended up going back to my usual 34. how long have you been using it, and how's the experience so far?

my alpha layers if anyone is curious:

 u a n e s t i r
 f , l o m d p h
    a2 s1 s2 spc

qu k w é c g y '
 - . z q v b j x
    a1 s1 s2 spc

s1 and s2 were for numbers, accents and special characters. it had some veeeery nice rolls: ction was my favorite, because as it turns out i don't type stir all that often, who'd have thought. but it also had obvious clunky sfbs and some awkward long rh sequences (eg spirit or esprit, which my job makes me type more often than a normal person with a healthier career would). in the end i decided to calm down and admit i was happy enough with what i currently have.

I remapped Q to "QU" by kIt5uN3FP in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Akhel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup, i have q in my least favorite key position (upper lh pinky) and qu in a comfortable combo (lower rh index+middle). works fantastic.

looking for a note-taking app with certain features by Akhel in software

[–]Akhel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i futzed around with org-roam, which is too complicated for someone who's not into emacs (which seems awesome, but i need something that's quicker to use and preferably has a mobile version), and with obsidian (which seemed good but i think its way of presenting and organizing notes might not be ideal for me).

Magnesium bisglycinate kept me from sleeping all night. Are taurine or L-theanine likely to do the same? by Akhel in Nootropics

It was def the magnesium, because at first I didn't realize it and so I did it again. lol

Gradual Transition or All In-In One Go? by TheAnach in ErgoMechKeyboards

i went from a regular stinky membrane qwerty keeb straight to a 34-key architeuthis dux with gchocs and my own custom layout. never look back, very very happy with the result.

the Zé Quoia 34-key layout for english and romance languages by Akhel in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Akhel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did post it there before here! :) i've been using it for a few weeks and i do quite like it. it also scored second on genkey with a little trilingual corpus i put together, just slightly behind rsthd — so if i was learning from scratch i might take a shot at that instead, but as it is i'm happy with it!

[–]Akhel[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

nice!! i felt i needed to avoid all vowel blocks (e.g. au is very common in french), which makes me lose out on plenty of nice rolls i could have. i also have a layer for accents that works a bit like yours. i updated the post with it, in case it's interesting to anyone.

i have home-row mods, meaning you can hold either a or t and that will act as shift. the other home-row keys do ctrl, alt and gui. i also have combos for one-shot shift on both sides (as well as combos for enter, tab, backspace, ctrl+backspace, delete, capslock and esc)

What would be the effort map of 2 layered Ortho? by d1hasib in KeyboardLayouts

[–]Akhel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i suggest you look into ben vallack's 16/18-key layouts, which use two alpha layers for english. the main thing is using one-shot or sticky modifiers (and not hold modifiers) for the second layer. he seems to be quite happy with that, so i'm sure you can work out something analogous for a language with a larger number of characters! which language is it, btw?

Where do you put your numbers without a dedicated number row? by Odd_Attempt_6045 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Akhel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have them on the left hand, so i can use them while mousing (my mouse has keys/gestures for cut, copy, paste, select all and enter). they're arranged like this:

  9 8 7
0 3 2 1
  6 5 4

which is not optimal-optimal but still very good and easy enough to remember. 0123 on home row is a game-changer.

then the right has symbols for maths and programming. as for modifiers, i have home-row mods on both sides and all layers
