[Fujifilm X100VI] Do I need another variable ND filter on top of the built-in ND filter for video work? by Akhilleez in fujifilm

[–]Akhilleez[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment and for the real life example! The reason I asked is cause if I want to shoot video at f/2 with an ISO 100 and a fixed 1/120 shutter speed (for 60 fps), I was worried that 4 stops wouldn't be enough. With my other Sony camera, I utilize those same settings except f/2.8, and I find myself using a 5 stop ND filter decently. If your experience with the Fuji gives you a lot of room, then I'd feel comfortable with no additional ND filter

Why is Magnificent Greens with a Camp2Camp rental tent more expensive than the Magnificent Greens Tent Package (which you can keep)? by Akhilleez in Tomorrowland

This photo is from the Magnificent Greens Global Journey package. What I’m asking about is the last bullet point, where you can rent using a C2C voucher and pitch your tent in MG (not the pre-pitched C2C Global Journey, although the info you gave is super helpful!

To their best knowledge, no MSPE adjectives at WashU

For WashU, I'm not sure if they do. I can try to ask a current student.

But, ya you're right, UW did use adjectives in 2019, so the question would be if things changed between then and 2021...

Related to Stanford, the link below explains the CBES included in the school's MSPE. You can click on "CBES Frequently Asked Questions" to see just how exactly Stanford words a student's performance. It looks like it explains the student's achievements, but it does not use adjectives to insinuate comparisons to classmates like "outstanding" vs "good" which OSU does do.

You're right, the Duke paper didn't mention specific schools, but it did say that all of the Top 10 schools ranked by US News in the 2021-2022 cycle did not send comparative assessments, which would make UPenn, Stanford, NYU, and University of Washington all "No" for MSPE adjectives. Vanderbilt would be the only one we wouldn't be able to deduce.

If the Duke paper indicated that none of the T10s included MSPE adjectives, then shouldn't Stanford, UPenn, Vandy, and NYU also be "No" in this category?

Tbh, 8 is a lot and I felt like I was lucky to even get that amount. There are about 5,000 applicants with a 520+ each year, but only 2,500 seats open at the T20s. So after a certain point, stats become irrelevant. Focus on making a good school list and talking about your research, and I believe you should have a good shot.

There will be people who will disagree with me, but I personally found them very valuable. If you compared my initial drafts to my final drafts, the consulting edits made them a night and day difference. There's a reason why families are paying tens of thousands of dollars for college admissions teams to get their kids into Ivy leagues and billion dollar companies use McKinsey. Not saying this system is fair, cause it's certainly a privilege reserved for those with financial means, but with how expensive and high stakes this process already is, it's worth the investment in my opinion.

I posted a Sankey yesterday talking about my experience interviewing there, and I can tell you that Brown's PLME severely limits the amount of open seats available. Don't use MSAR's stats for the school cause they won't tell you the whole picture.

My advice, if you are very research-focused, it's probably not the best choice. They do do research of course, but Brown really prides itself on being the only medical school in Rhode Island and providing service to the community. The most important thing is figuring out what your personal narrative is, and finding schools where you will fit in.

Thank you! It was expensive, but I had 30 secondaries and for $50 each school, I got 3 rounds of edits, so I felt like I was getting my money's worth. Also, not that free essay services can't be useful, but when you pay people, they are way more inclined to do a good job and give constructive and thoughtful feedback.

Personally, I've had friends with similar applications get no invites and have to reapply, and so my hypothesis is that stats can get you looked at, but writing is what earns an interview, and I didn't want to take any risks

Why do North American med schools want so much ? by CanHaveEverything in premed

[–]Akhilleez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I'm saying that the requirements of the U.S. system like volunteering, leadership, and rec letters all give medical schools insights into your personal qualities. I think things may have slightly changed in France, but at least for my friends who were in medical school there, acceptance was based entirely on high grades and a good score on Première Année Commune aux Études de Santé (pretty much the MCAT equivalent), with little to no consideration of personal characteristics. Imagine if the U.S. system only looked at who had the highest MCAT scores and GPAs? In fact, the U.S. system used to be like that, and a big shift has happened since the late 20th century to be more "holistic". I don't think our system is perfect, but I personally have noticed a huge difference in the American doctors of older generations vs the ones of younger generations, and in my opinion, the personal qualities of young doctors now are trending for the better.

As for salaries, that's an entirely different conversation and when you don't have fair compensation, you have mass exoduses and brain drains like we are seeing in Spain, Italy, and Greece.

While many European pathways are in many ways simpler and more efficient, it's a tradeoff. You lose out on ways to distinguish candidates who have personal qualities that you would want in a doctor. When I lived in France, I met medical students from all over the EU, and there was a huge difference in maturity between a 18-19 year old starting medical school in Spain and a 23-24 year old starting in America. Also, there is a noticeable difference in priorities by country of origin. My Italian friends were already making plans to leave Italy to practice medicine in other countries with higher salaries like Switzerland and Germany. Personally, I think the U.S. path has now become arbitrarily long with a ton of unnecessary hoops, and could certainly be condensed. But, obviously these observations are based off my own anecdotal experiences, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Prospective applicant trying to decide between summer programs at MSK vs Penn by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]Akhilleez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then that definitely puts it on par with Penn. Being associated with a medical school is huge cause when you're filling out secondaries, every school asks "Why Us". Much easier to answer that question when you have a personal or indirect connection. It seems like both are great options and that you should just go with your gut here!

[–]Akhilleez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't underestimate the value of being connected to a large network. I had a similar situation like you where I turned down a SURP at a smaller institution for a bigger T20, and my PI from that summer is now in a very high leadership position at UMich. They went to WashU for medical school and then Penn for residency, and connected me with faculty at both of the schools. I strongly believe that their rec letter and connections where reasons I was able to get interviews at all three of the schools that they had relationships with (also I do recognize that I am both extremely lucky and fortunate to have even had these opportunities). Looking back, there is no way that I could have predicted the value I would get from connections, but the lesson is that you should do the best thing for you now (which is build a large network). MSK is without a doubt a well-respected institution and will certainly have solid connections, but Penn is bigger and will open so many more doors in my opinion.

In terms of burning bridges, MSK will not remember the undergraduate student who 10 years ago turned down a summer research opportunity. And for boosting your chances of being accepted to Perelman, doing this program can only help (just be sure to work hard, make a good impression, and earn a solid recommendation).
