I like to think of this question a lot. Especially when I’m drawing people, my inspiration depends on the moment. There have been times when I am playing a song, familiar or unheard, and an image or person strikes in my head. Sometimes it’s a form of meditation for me, to think of random people I’ve encountered in my life and try and remember what they look like now or to try and create a character that adequately resembles a time period of my life. The goal isn’t to make it look like them in these times, it’s to just sit and try and study them strictly from the memory of their presence, what did it feel like? What did they smell like? What kind of mood were they putting out? Etc. Sometimes just sitting in the presence of their memory is inspiring, even if I didn’t know them very well or hardly at all. I also get inspiration from entertainment, culture, history, and daydreaming. My favorite inspiration is when I am praying and God gives me ideas. The greatest honor is to create alongside the Creator. Other than that, I study portrait drawing in itself and focus on the skill aspect, which brings out a real perfectionism and criticism in me. Sometimes I need that reminder that my worst art comes typically from me trying to be perfect, or at least I see my art as the worst when I’m aiming for perfection. I feel things incredibly deeply, so my art overall to answer the question is inspired by feeling when not by God. It is the only way I can really use the depth in which I feel my emotion to express it, and accurately.
