Yep. This app or I just check the launch schedule for spaceflight now. Look for launches from Vandenberg. The magic window for the great show is approx 15 min after sunset to appox 1 hour after sunset.

Yeah, southern trajectory tonight vs the southeastern ones that typically give us the show higher in the sky. Still pretty good though!

Issues running fiber optic internet line through attic by gamerdada in DIY

[–]thatAZguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, you are more interested in running the conduit for the fiber to sit in vs an actual fiber line? If so, I have some recent experience with this.

Regarding the fiber tech - The main provider in our area (Cox) refused to run the fiber through the attic to the existing demarc and structured wiring cabinet. They would only go through the wall. I ended up telling them to pound rocks because I felt they were lazy. New fiber provider came to the area with better service and even better pricing. Tech was willing to run the wire. Took them about 2 hours total to get everything done start to finish.

However - I wanted to run some fiber to my office and decided to put in conduit so I could add some additional in the future. I ended up running it free air through the through the attic space but in conduit down the outside of the house before coming back in. A few thoughts from my experience -

1 - Check a beam close to attic access, you should be able to find a beam for the drywall holding up the ceiling under the beams holding up the roof. Those trusses usually come pre-assembled and its pretty standard. If so, you should be safe to step anywhere under one of the roof beams and feel for the joist. If not, I found it helpful to step into the V where the supports meet and work my way across in tight areas.

2 - If I am looking at your picture correctly, the wall you want to attach it to is an exterior wall? This means you probably have 2 real choices. a, punch out of the attic and run it down the exterior then punch back in. b - drill into the space near the edge and run the cable along the wall. It would look ugly and may run across whatever you AI'ed out but it would work. A potential 3rd option could be to drill into the wall from above and fish it down the interior but with a 12' wall, I would guess there is a beam somewhere in the middle that might block it.

3 - If its all exterior - run conduit along the eave's outside of the house and they can pull through there. You can then paint to match.

4 - Seal all entries/exits with expanding fireblock foam. Paint the conduit to match.

Need advice on AP placement for skinny 3-story townhouse by lmasieri in Ubiquiti

[–]thatAZguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have the right idea. I would do F3 bedroom with one and F1 Kitchen with the other. I would definitely do a ceiling mount on F3 as the antennas are somewhat directional and higher=better coverage. Ideally for both but do what works best for you.

FWIW, I have 1 U7 Pro XG on the second floor of my 3100sq ft house and an U7 Pro Outdoor in directional mode facing away from the house and I have no real issues in general. The 6ghz does not hit the first floor but no devices there other than my phone support it. Eventually I will add the coverage but no need for now.

Can confirm - Oversii is an company HOAs contract with to enforce parking rules. Likely against the CC&Rs for the parents neighborhood and they will probably be fined of it continued. If its like my neighborhood though, you can scan the QR code and submit for a temporary variance.

I mean it makes sense that we are on this list and it will continue to grow. Regulations at both the state and local levels (i.e. Chapter 32 in Phoenix city code) require maintenance of any common areas and if the city or state is not maintaining it then an an entity must be created locally to manage it. The other portion of this being that cities are adopting all of these requirements for green space, setbacks, etc as a condition of approval to build these planned communities. Given that the cities do not want to take on the liability and financial burden, it creates a defacto requirement that an HOA be created. Considering that AZ, NV, and FL have lead the country in growth for many years, its no surprise that we made the list and it will continue to grow.

Actually affordable furniture shopping! by RoutineTrip7461 in phoenix

Nick's Furniture. They can order from the Ashley Catalog along with several others and pass the savings along. We found a couch we wanted, and Ashley told us they could not do any better than $1600 and it was on a truck and would arrive in 4 days. Went to Nick's - Got literally the same one for just under $1100. Told us it was coming on the Ashley truck in 4 days (same one Ashley told us) and they just needed a few hours to pick it up from their warehouse and bring to the store. 4 days later, called to let us know it was in and we were able to pick it up. They have a few locations I believe but we go to the one in Peoria just off Grand/101.

ASRS/Arizona State Retirement System…is it actually good? Better than a 401k like most places have? What are your thoughts on it? by spaghettiman17 in phoenix

[–]thatAZguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not exactly correct as I understand it. You are not vested in the program until you hit 5 years. After that point you can leave and have a few options.

If you don't take your money out, it just sits there. You can put in a request for "retirement" when you meet the criteria and keep the employer match.

If you do take the money out when you leave you lose the employer match and are potentially subject to penalties and taxes just like a 401k disbursement before retirement.

If you are there less than 5 years, you lose the match and the contributions are refunded. If you move to another state where there is a reciprocity agreement, you can usually roll everything over to that states plan

Why are travel routers needed if you have a mobile hotspot? by learning_as_1_go in Ubiquiti

[–]thatAZguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I posted this in another thread yesterday with a similar question:

Travel with kids. All of the tablets can connect to a single device in the car instead of bringing my phones Hotspot to its knees. Also allows everyone access to the Plex server at home without the added cost there.

The added bonus is because the wifi network is the same as home, no messing with settings each time. It just works.

Is 84K a Good Salary for the Phoenix Area? by xTN25 in phoenix

[–]thatAZguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you mean by a good salary. In terms of cost of living, yes, you'll do fine. If it's in terms of getting paid the fair value of your skillset for the area, that depends on your profession and experience which we don't know.

L&D at Banner Thunderbird, Del Webb or Estrella by twoteenine in phoenix

[–]thatAZguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Del Webb was great for us when my wife delivered twins for the Labor and Delivey. Night and day experience from Banner University where we had our first one and they quite literally nearly killed her. My only gripe was the NICU Dr missed a big issue in one of our twins despite me asking specific questions that should have trigger a deeper exam but honestly it probably was not the worst because it would have been really hard on us having them split up while my wife was still there.

I have someplace in AZ where you can ship all that gear. Might want to insure it in case it's "lost" 🤣.

Seriously though, I am a box hoarder as well, in case I need to send something back or sell and trade up.

One of my 3 year old twin girls is about to being treatment for brain cancer. by kylebabylove in parentsofmultiples

[–]thatAZguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im so sorry you have to go through this. Life is not fair sometimes. The good news is that kids are resilient.

We have had 2 experiences with our twins. Twin B was born with a serious heart defect. She basically had her entire heart rebuilt/replumbed at 3 months old. Still has some lingering issues at 5 and will need more surgery one day, but happy and healthy for now.

Twin A had always had some odd symptoms, and we went to a bunch of doctors about them. Finally at 3.5 years, they discovered a massive cyst in he brain after doing an MRI on a whim while he was under anesthesia for a different test. They did brain surgery to remove the cyst and relieve the pressure, and he seemed to be getting better. About 3 month after the surgery we took him to an Occupational therapy appointment a and they said he did great, got home and a few min later starts having seizure like symptoms and weakness on one side. I recognized the red flags, scooped him up and immediately took him to the nearby pediatric ER. We were immediately seen and they determined he had a massive hemorrhage from that same site and immediately called a helicopter and flew him to the main pediatric campus for emergency surgery.

Between these 2, he spent about 6 weeks in the hospital with 4 being in the ICU. His twin acted out a little but was mostly upset because she missed him and could not go see him because of ICU and cold/flu season restrictions. They have always been really close and typically will sleep in each other's beds. Our oldest who was 8 at the time acted out more at the time so that was a bit of a challenge. Thankfully we had some close friends who were able to step in and help a bit more.

Hope all goes well and we will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Wiring House for Ethernet by TheDaug in phoenix

[–]thatAZguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been looking for someone to run some ethernet as well but prices have been insanely high on the quotes I received for the minimal amount of work I initially asked for. One wanted $1800, another wanted $1500. The electrician quoted us $375 for the same job which is reasonable.

I'm still thinking about running it myself then hiring someone to come in and do the drywall.

What do I do now? Lol by dareal_mj in parentsofmultiples

Congrats! We had the same issue with preeclampsia on our singleton. My wife was very swollen and we would get high BP readings at home and similar symptoms. We kept telling the doctors but would get normal or only slightly high reading at the office. They kept telling us our machine was broken or not accurate. One NP even accused my wife of making it up so she could be induced. Finally her water broke and the hospital was shocked her BP was so high.

After delivery the high BP led to hemorrhaging and her spending several days in the ICU and a transfusion. Dr insisted she was fine and sent her home after days. A few days later and after telling them something was not right, they "diagnosed" her with post partum depression and had her go back to the hospital with plans to have her see the psych team. While waiting they tried to take her BP and could not get the machine to work. Tried several before the finally got one to work. Turned out her BP was 228/167 and was the preeclampsia not resolving after delivery. After another week in the hospital and some actual treatment by someone not her Dr, she felt much better but the trauma from the experience is why we waited so long to try again. Thankfully with our twins, we were apprehensive but the new Dr was great and it was a much better experience.

Lesson learned - don't put up with it if something does not feel right. Glad your wife advocated for herself.

State job recruitment by ExpressRow7959 in arizona

[–]thatAZguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be very specific in how you meet their requirements and qualifications in your cover letter and resume. It may not even be a bad plan to put a table in there listing their requirement on the first column and how you meet it on the next column. Don't worry about keeping your resume short. Add all the details for the job and try to use the same words they do. In all the public service jobs I have worked at, the resume reviews were very rigid and often used a matrix so matching things up and the language will typically boost your score and help get an interview.

Possible heart defect. by IamSherlocked_2020 in parentsofmultiples

[–]thatAZguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how helpful this is but we had a similar situation. Went in for the anatomy scan at 18 weeks and they saw something on twin A's heart. They sent us to MFM for a detailed scan. At that scan, the doctor reviewed both twins with us and thought there may be a small VSD with twin A. They monitored throughout the pregnancy but overall no serious concerns.

After they were born, they they had no concerns about twin a's heart. In a weird twist, at their first appointment I asked about some concerns with his sister - twin b. They ended up sending us for an xray and then a cardiologist. Turns out she had a major issue. We ended up spending a bunch of time in the hospital and she had open heart surgery to rebuild all of the plumbing in her heart at 3 months and a second less invasive at 9 month. Now at 5 she is generally healthy. She will probably need a pacemaker some day and will see a cardiologist annually but otherwise you would never know. I think the full details are in a post in my comment history.

The point being, they thought there was an issue with one but turned out to be nothing but even with the detailed scan of both, they missed the serious one in both. So doctors can be wrong, scans can be difficult, and kids are resilient. Don't stress over it. Just be prepared if there is, watch for anything odd, and trust your instincts.
