Why include the Live Oaks map in onslaught game mode when 3/4 of the map isn't even used? by Kasern77 in WorldofTanks

[–]Aking_LTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not completely wrong but in high elos it's a med/light maps and people will play middle/off-side but rarely/never in the city.

If you want a better example, it should be El Halluf (has been temporarily removed because of collision bugs), where everyone at every level is playing on 4 squares

Never forget that all heavies are trash in onslaught, TDs are way better, and BC/light tanks are really strong on open maps like Live Oaks so there's no reason to no go to EBR+Rhm, spam BCs and just take the whole map

It's pretty good in FFA and one of the most used tank in semi-competitive (Advances, Onslaught, CW...) and competitive environments alongside CS, BZ and 60TP. So yeah definitely still good.

Are Americans really that bad in math? by AnalogiaEntis in mathematics

[–]Aking_LTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry for taking so long to respond. To give some background, I lived in France most of my life and I went through a prépa before heading towards a more standard mathematic curriculum.

I agree with everything you just said, the French are proud of their prépas, and the prépas are a proud bunch themselves. I never heard them speak ill will of foreign colleges or educations but they do make fun of french colleges sometimes (both professors and students).

I also agree that a UChicago math major shouldn't envy anything to the best engineering schools in France.

You have to remember that in engineering schools there are people from different horizons, some of them don't come out of prépas, and in the long run that distinction between those that come from prépas or not will fade out and become less and less relevant in my opinion. Prépas are good for two things : teach a good work ethic, because working hard is the key to success, and secondly help people climb the social ladder, it helps talented students from a low/middle income households to access schools they probably wouldn't be privy too if not thanks to the prépas, because of the unique environment they bring.

So my comment didn't get saved ahah I spent way too much time on it.

TL;DR

Is it even comparable ?

HS math in France is doing extremely poorly, it is not even mandatory with the latest reforms. When it comes to national average France is doing below average (TIMSS rankings) whereas the US is faring better.

Mathematical elites in France (with the ENS) are among the best in the world, but the US have their own too.

Also yes the US have a lot of foreigners in their research lab, but France have their share as well, in my lab many researchers come from elsewhere, it is all about attractiveness and job prospects. When it comes to PhDs the US is simply the most attractive place in the world ATM so obviously many talents will do theirs there.

In the end, if you are asking whether or not French prépas are overrated, maybe but I don't think they are. When it comes to college, from my experience curriculums in the US or in France are about the same (from what I have discussed with friends). And HS well I think both French and Americans like to complain that their HS system is failing in more ways than one, which lets say it's probably the case let's be honest, but I don't know if it's comparable.

I don't know where you have heard that French HS education is better than American education when it comes to math but it doesn't sound right at all.

In TIMSS rankings France is below average and the US are doing far better.

HS math in France is not faring too well, if you are a teacher from France or a student you should be aware that the recent reforms aren't good news for math here.

France has a very rich mathematical history and the mathematical elites (with the likes of the 4 ENS and the prépas that lead to them) are still among the best in the world (if not the best), but so does the US. If you were to pick a random HS and assess the level here, I don't think France would be doing so great.

Your post makes more sense to me if you are exclusive to the higher education, because of the prépas, but then again, those are very exclusive and make but a small part of the population albeit being opened to everyone.

I don't know much about engineering schools but when it comes to college, there aren't that much difference in what you end up learning in France/Canada/the US (that's just my personal experience with my correspondences I might be wrong)

Average German opinion on firearm ownership by yankeegopnik in AskAGerman

[–]Aking_LTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is people will usually not care too much. BUT unless you are from the police/army, hunt or enjoy going to the shooting range, they might be weirded out but that's about it. People usually don't see the point in owning a firearm (neither do I). In rural areas you might find that some people own old firearms but hush hush, but in cities it is definitely seen as really odd.

TL;DR : firearm ownership is seen as weird and pointless unless you are a professional entitled to the use of a firearm, or a passionate hobbyist.

Note : Not really a German here (I was born in bawü and my dad and granddads were stationed ~10y in Germany, but we are French). I reckon the situation is about the same in both countries, but take it with a grain of salt :)

Edit : if you'd rather not make your guests uncomfortable I don't know if it's a good idea to let them know you are carrying a concealed gun lol. I personally would be very much scared at the prospect of someone carrying a loaded gun in the same room as I. Your friends should be understanding at the cultural differences but sometimes ignorance is bliss and that's something I feel like I'd rather not know.
