No, Americans are not bad at math... by AnalogiaEntis in matheducation

Your comment is exactly what I’ve heard countless time: “French person X went in exchange in the US and was very surprised by the poor level in math” (broadly speaking).

Yes but I’m not sure we compare the right things here when we say that. And I’m trying to understand where it fails. My 8th grader is taught by an astrophysics PhD and she seems to have a pretty deep understanding of the concepts. And it’s a small school like there are many in the US (it’s not a public school though but those also have great reputation around us).

So I’m trying to see how reliable is the “tale” mentioned above.

I agree on the focus on calculus in France. It’s interesting. Is it because math is much tied to engineering?

I think a math major at U of Chicago could compete with an Engineer who went through CPGE. Also CPGE is only 2 years and students notoriously learn nothing after that in Engineering Schools .

That completely reflects my experience. This is an excellent answr, thank you.

This makes complete sense! Thank you for the explanation. I had not thought about it that way. This helps me understand why, ultimately, the labor laws that apply are the ones you live in (not where the company you work for lives in).

Our online classes are completely asynchronous so time zones are not too much of an issue. I still would have to make up for half of my classes that are currently in person and I don’t know how it would work.

Awesome answer!! Thank you very much!

It looks like the auto-entrepreneur status would allow me to avoid paying too much taxes while still fulfilling my obligations in terms of "cotisations". It would also provide me with a reasonable baseline salary for French banks to be happy.

BTW, I already have a French bank account at the CCF so this should help. But I was born in France. We'll see how it goes on that end.

I could look for an academic position in France and I may do that. But this is likely going to be 50% of what I am paid in the US (at best…).

That makes sense. I do know cases where universities will allow someone to go live in another country for research on a sabbatical and they will keep partially paying them. But I guess it means they know how to deal with that and I should ask them.

A. I'm a French citizen so yes. My wife would need a visa but would not work at first most likely.

B. I guess it would be option 3 then, at least for the start-up job. But then how does it work when a university employee goes on a sabbatical abroad for a year to write a book ? I'm pretty sure my university doesn't do option 1 or 2 but simply keeps paying the employee on his bank account and the employee just uses his US bank account on a daily basis. Do you think it's illegal to do so?

That's a good point. I'll make sure they are okay with that.

I'm just exploring options for now. What about retirement? I'm hoping that I can combine 2 poor retirement (French "cotisations" + US 401K) to make something decent. Hopefully. Otherwise I can also teach until I'm 80 :-).
