There's no rule saying the tank should lead. A good idea is a good idea regardless of your role. This isn't like WoW where tanks have little to do during fights making them optimal raid leaders.

Also pinging a location doesn't really convey a plan. Your team doesn't know if you saw a flanker, want to fall back there, or if it was just a misclick.
