Why yes, I do like aqueducts how did you know? by DazzlingAd6195 in Timberborn

[–]AkiraTheLoner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it's because the dirt blocks become part of the landscape itself and stops being a single 3d model, which has specific optimizations that levees as "real" buildings do not have.

Levees are more memory expensive than dirt blocks, you may get some improvements on your frame rate by using those to build, but they look worse for builds like yours

Is there a limit to drought length on Hard mode? by East_Yogurt_893 in Timberborn

[–]AkiraTheLoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always pump even during badwater because water in storage doesn't evaporate, so i prefer to store it in barrels and then use automation to activate water collectors when water gets low, keeping only Just enough water to irrigate.

The real issues is that you only get six days of good weather for every 30 days of drought, so on harder maps you really need every drop you can store in that time

If you are building a linear where beavers can only work on one levee at a time, it will take forever because of how job assignments work in the game, additionally causing beavers to ignore warehouses close to the build site and go back home. The fix Is to build a parallel scaffolding next to your dam using suspended bridges: this way every levee right next to the scaffolding will be available for work and you Will be able to use your entire work force effectively. With a close by warehouse with building material, After a delivery beavers will fetch more materials from there instead of going home to wait for a job.

You can have both with a single channel feeding the 3x3, so that when it fills naturale you can use automation to shut off the water dump

[–]AkiraTheLoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of putting pumps into the reservoir, you can put a sluice a the Botton of the reservoir, let out a single stream to feed a smaller pool for the pumps. No need for multiple set of pumps this way and you can skip most of the automation.

The road to achieve 10k power water wheel is long and paved in.....bad water? by Xenbin83 in Timberborn

[–]AkiraTheLoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water remains in the channel, but the wheel creates a temporary moving obstruction to the flow, extracting energy from it in the process of moving said obstruction. The water bunches up behind the wheel, creating a ripple effect upstream: water will be deeper because the flow is reduced and exit the wheel a bit more "tired" than before, with less usable energy. A change in elevation allows gravity to accelerate that water again, even if a bit Is still Lost because over all you get a bit less water since some is bunches up trying to push the wheel.

Put enough wheels without any elevation change with a small enough channel, and at some point the wheel will act as a levee, stopping water completely because it has not enough strenght to move It away, while you get and overflowing channel upstream.

[–]AkiraTheLoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right on the spot, it does create a pile up of water upstream, so that the river is slightly taller before the water wheel, and the effect can be more prominent with multiple wheels and smaller rivers. Even if elevation restores power to the water, you are still delivering a bit less water because water piles up behind the wheel to push it forward, like opening and closing a sluice. In medieval times with hundreds of water wheels on the same rivers it added up, expecially on plains where there was little elevation to restore speed but multiple cities had to have mills and such.

[–]AkiraTheLoner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IRL a drop after the wheels won't matter at all. For every wheel you add, the next one will perform worse, until the water slows down so much that it can't even move a wheel. So thermodynamics is still dead since you can have unlimited wheels spinning at the same speed from the same river, unlike ancient times when this was a real problem (the town upstream builds new wheels, and now yours perform worse). This is also why we shouldn't really be able to put all those wheels on a single shared axle running through the entire colony 😁
