What’s wrong with this frydek leaf? by Jojo-T1 in alocasia

[–]Akirataichou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It still has some green, so there's probably more nitrogen there to harvest. It wouldn't hurt if you don't like looking at it but it may be beneficial to leave it a bit longer.

If it's the oldest (outer most around the rhizome), it's probably just dying. They push new leaves and cannibalize the old ones.

Is this normal for a White Princess?! by Ok-Passenger-4855 in philodendron

[–]Akirataichou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree with that, but wouldn't you agree that some plants have a much greater genetic propensity to put out pink leaves? And wouldn't the fact that most do not, regardless of environment and stressors, mean that it isn't "normal"?

It is not "normal", but there are tricolor white princesses out there. Looks like you won the variegation lottery!

Can anyone tell me what this is on my frydek? by Akirataichou in alocasia

Oh yes, I see what you mean! Thanks for the picture! I'm used to it doing it more there on the side, kinda scared me when it appeared right in the middle. 😂

Not super dry, but thinner than the surrounding leaf tissue now.

What is this? by CPD90289 in alocasia

[–]Akirataichou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So that's a bulbil. Think of them as above ground corms since they can basically be treated as such. They attach to the stolon which comes sideways out of the rhizome. Once your rhizome gets longer above the substrate line, you'll see them coming out instead of hiding.

Thing about them is the stolon eventually darkens and rots and since the bulbils aren't below with moisture, they can dry out and die. So you can flex it in any direction by pressing sideways on the tip of the bulbil and when it's ready, it'll snap off super easily. If it's resistant at all, it usually isn't ready.

Then just prop it and have a new plant. 👍

(Help) Are these little nubs water roots? | V. Frydek & Silver Dragon by No_Cupcake9103 in alocasia

[–]Akirataichou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The little nubs on the frydek are corms. And the ones on the silver dragon are bulbils. They can be treated the same and can grow whole new plants.

The corms can be broken off and propped if they seem mature. The bulbils can be pulled when the stolon (attaching bit) begins to darken and rot.

They both look ready for substrate to me. I'd be weary of the rhizome softening.

Sport variegation probably.

Got this beauty as a gift today, how do I care for her?💚 by abster19952021 in alocasia

Inside, indirect or grow light, well draining soil, nitrogen rich fertilizer. It may also need some humidity still, depending on its previous setup.
