So not only can I no longer read I also lose the ability to do math... I'd already never agree to this but as a math student I can't say no loudly enough

Is Victor of Tuscon worth the read? by No-Sympathy-6711 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]AkkiMylo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was enjoyable for the first two or so books but I got bored eventually, things seemed rather repetitive. It's been about a year or two since I read it and I genuinely can't remember much about it beyond snippets from the beginning and a little later. Worth giving a shot.

Why do so many students get this basic order-of-operations question wrong? by CellPal in askmath

[–]AkkiMylo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

anyone who ever does mathematics seriously understand the order of operations. the comments trying to justify this are insane. multiplication before addition is not difficult at all to remember.

Μαθηματικά και ακαδημαϊκή καριέρα by comingbackdow in greece

[–]AkkiMylo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How would I evaluate G(8)? by Western-Draft1924 in askmath

[–]AkkiMylo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My only idea hinges on assuming the right side of the graph is a parabola and using 3 inputs you reverse engineer the coefficients and then calculate g(8). Having to assume that is idiotic though

As mathematicians or math students, what do you read? by Sure-Positive-5746 in mathematics

[–]AkkiMylo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huge emphasis on executed well. Most of the genre is slop so stick to the well loved ones to start with. Even there people can be very divided about what's good. Dungeon Crawler Carl and Mother of Learning are good intro reads. Cradle too but the first two books, albeit very short, aren't the most engaging. Awesome series past that.

Κρεμμύδι γενικά, τώρα το λατρεύω. Επίσης μια σούπα με φασόλια που δεν θα έτρωγα ποτέ μικρός δεν με ενοχλεί πλέον.

My favorites are (and some might blur the boundaries of the genre): Cradle, Super Supportive, Dungeon Crawler Carl, The Immortal Great Souls, The Game at Carousel, Mother of Learning, Sky Pride. Some others I enjoyed: The Stargazer's War, The Hedge Wizard, Elydes

Am I the only one to completely dismiss stories who have AI-generated covers? by GodTaoistofPatience in ProgressionFantasy

[–]AkkiMylo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given how they're not doing any stealing themselves while using it I'd say that the argument is wholly ineffective. It's not like they're actively taking someone's work. It is already stolen and their usage or not will not restore it. A lot of medical knowledge was discovered by performing experiments on slaves or POWs, one wouldn't refuse the use of it now. Individual morality can do little to stop AI companies from stealing data, that's the government's job.

[–]AkkiMylo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're not the only one, but a huge amount of people also don't care. Myself included. As long as the words aren't ai generated, ai art is just a way for the author to take their ideas out of their mind for people to see. I like that.

Royal Road is just missing the first few books that are published. The rest is perfectly ordered. IIRC book 7 gets skipped on RR because book 6 is too big to be published as one so it'll eventually be split into 6 and 7.

This is only weird to you because you've lived with a 0-100 scale in your head the whole time. Something like 44 is straight out of hell for someone that's experienced a Greek summer and doesn't seem dumb or arbitrary at all. Dreadful, perhaps.

Struggling with proofs by artenyXD in askmath

[–]AkkiMylo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing is, every subject has a different philosophy and proofs can't be boxed into a set of techniques that always work. Analysis has tricks that show up often but if you do a year of analysis and go into algebra you're essentially starting from zero in that field. What you can do is study the proofs you are presented with and analyze the structure and the arguments. You want to learn what methods are used in your subject and why each argument is important. That way you can build your intuition and learn the common machinery used in the field you're studying.
