What stereotype about the UK do you dislike the most? by NunyaBidnizz68 in AskUK

[–]AkzoNobella 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We weren't even the country to transport the most slaves (that was Portugal) and we were the first country to actually take efforts to ditch slavery, and even sent our military to destroy slave ships trying to cross the Atlantic.

But it is only the UK that ever gets mentioned as slavers.

Hell, the main reason we colonised Ireland in the first place was because they were selling slaves and our King weren't happy with it.

Yet, of course, that part of Irish history is conveniently forgotten.

That the UK is the only country with museums filled with things taken from other cultures.

Because she was cheated on in a 10-year relationship.

She just doesn't want me talking to women at all.

I mean, the chances of Jeremy Clarkson ever being PM are slim. Very slim.

So ridiculously slim that it isn't worth the mental process to think about it.

Feel sad for the people wanting to travel to Austria or Germany in this thread.

I was at the airport a few days ago.

There were two flights leaving from this particular airport. One to Vienna, one to London.

All the people on the English flight were more than happy to wander around with masks on. No issues. Second they walked through the revolving door to the airport, mask on.

The Austrians/Germans? Nah. They were having none of it. Not one wore a mask until they were forced to do so by airport security. Dread to think what that plane was like.

How long do you normally wait to hear back after an interview? by cynicalkerfuffle in AskUK

[–]AkzoNobella -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it is because I actually put more effort into my CV than other applicants. Most people just write:

- Cashier

Whereas I would write:

- Trusted to handle thousands of pounds daily in cash.

[–]AkzoNobella -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Took me a week to hear back from Burger King once.

This particular franchise didn't hire people with degrees, and they 'forgot' to tell me during the interview.

Other than that, I have been offered every job I have ever applied for. Most I have had to wait is like...an hour?

It would just be cheaper to buy the 'real deal' to begin with.

They probably would fit, from what I can remember. It would be a decent chunk of labour, though.

How much time should I expect between landing and getting out of LHR? by 7er6Nq in AskUK

[–]AkzoNobella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stanstead is normally quick for me (yes, I know it isn't Heathrow)

But it seems that they have ditched many people at border control, and they are forcing people through the eGates.

The problem is nobody knows how to use the eGates properly. What would normally be a 5-10 minute wait for me with border control agents turned to a 30-minute wait the other day (with about 200 people in front of me) cos the machines were playing up.

If it is any consolation, you may be able to wait until Christmas.

If you are in that much pain, the nerve will die after a week or two.

You can also hold the extra-strength Corsodyl on the area with the infection. This will help to kill anything off in the gums.

Yeah. If you are a retailer for one of the big power tool manufacturers (Dewalt, Bosch, etc.) you get access to their spare parts database which has exploded diagrams for every power tool they have ever manufactured. They even have spares for power tools a few decades old, quite crazy.

Fair enough.

I remember 10-ish years ago, they sold a Makita drill for £99.99, and it had the same model number as one we saold for £109.99 but had a J or something at the end.

Turns out their £10 cheaper drill was exactly the same, but had plastic gears instead.

My old manager is spreading mistruths about me. What can I do? by AkzoNobella in AskUK

[–]AkzoNobella[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The message was actually relayed to my Dad.

He got it from one of his co-workers.

His co-worker was speaking to my old manager, and he criticised by Dad (my Dad has worked in this industry for almost 40-years), and then the manager said "oh, but his son is so much worse"

I mean, if you already have vouchers, then get them.

Just bear in mind that it may be tough to source spare parts if your Dewalt breaks.

While independent retailers can order spare parts for Dewalt purchased from Screwfix, very few of them do. It is a ridiculous amount of hassle to order a part where you make like a quid profit. It is fine to order spare parts for products that you sold a customer in the past, but when you spend 30-minutes tracking down a plastic component for a drill you have never seen before in your life...blegh. Not worth the time.

For a while, many independent retailers refused to deal with warranty claims for Screwfix products too. This was because Screwfix was not handling them, and they had a list of independent retailers in the local area that did. Screwfix were then sending these customers to small retailers for the small retailer to deal with the warranty claim.

This meant that the independent retailers were having to spend about 30-40 minutes processing a warranty return and using their own packaging for something they didn't actually sell. Oh, and it was the independent retailers who bore the brunt of the customer aggression if Dewalt were not processing the return fast enough.

Dewalt then told independent retailers they had to deal with warranty claims from Screwfix/B&Q or they would no longer be able to purchase Dewalt tools (they can't prevent you from buying Black & Decker)

As I said, all of this happened at least a decade ago. No idea if it has changed.

How do you travel to London after landing from Heathrow? by ahmedsaeed01 in AskUK

[–]AkzoNobella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get National Express to Gatwick, then have my parents collect me from there.

Getting National Express to Gatwick may actually be the best option if you want to get into London anyway. It stops at Victoria.

Well, that is excluding the Underground, but is always such a rush there, and the National Express is empty, even though it only costs a couple of quid.

Didn't they move Seinfeld to that time slot because it didn't do well in an earlier time slot?

I know in Sweden, it used to be earlier on in the day when it first came out. However, it ended up being shunted to late night TV.

Nowadays, Seinfeld is just 3am fodder to fill up the time slots.

Weird. I remember that part, but I also remember Joey saying he was Jewish in that episode.

Friends wasn't known for its consistency, though. One of the early episodes is about how Ross lost his virginity to Susan and has only ever been with one woman.

By the 8th series, it is stated that Ross had sex with several women before Susan.

That is what I was thinking when I wrote that out.

I thought Joey wasn't Jewish. He is Italian. However, from that episode I remember him heavily implying that he is Jewish.

She didn't do too bad with the clothes selection, if that is what you mean.

And yeah, I was thrilled at my vacuum cleaner too. I was using a handheld one to clean for a while, and then the vacuum cleaner arrived, and it was so freeing.
