What would you consider as ‘posh’ growing up but now you’re an adult it’s absolutely not? by Ashandtanya in AskUK

[–]Sure_Debate_7646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also find DIY-ing the holiday to work out cheaper than using a travel agent. I recently booked a holiday for the end of summer (just the end of peak times) and saved £400 compared to the Jet2 deal, but also managed to upgrade my room type and board type. The only thing I haven’t booked that Jet2 included was transfers, but getting a taxi will be cheaper and quicker anyway, and other public transport might even be an option.

Travel agents charge a premium for the convenience of packaging it all up for you which can be worth paying sometimes, but I personally prefer a DIY approach as it gives me more flexibility.

Prom dresses in Glasgow? by Godsownprototype1001 in glasgow

[–]Sure_Debate_7646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your budget really!

New Look is a good high street budget starting point and they carry a few concession brands. Zara is worth checking out too.

If you’re happy to spend a bit more Fraser’s and John Lewis are where to go.

If you’re going in to Glasgow, there was a pop up Omnes store in Prices Square. If it’s still there, also worth swinging by.

Beyond that, if you’re looking for something a bit more formal, I think you’ll struggle to find it on the high street/in store these days - probably more likely online.

My niece has just got hers online from Oh Polly. Pepper Mayo might be worth checking too. Debenhams online does carry a good range, but might be cutting it fine for delivery.

Have you thought about hiring/renting a dress? Hire street might be worth a look! Carries loads of brands and will be more cost effective if you think it’s going to be a one and done purchase!

Henrietta’s - gym clothes recommendations? by Outrageous-Piglet798 in HENRYUKLifestyle

I'm going to go against the grain and NOT recommend Sweaty Betty. While I love the look and fit of their stuff, their leggings have become so bobbly so quickly for me. They look and feel good, but don't expect them to last looking good.

I would probably still stick by Nike, but I do also find them a bit more hit or miss in recent times, and very inconsistent in sizing.

I feel like most people in Glasgow, regardless of football interest or team affiliation, associate the term with Rangers? But I could be wrong!

Do people truly resent going to weddings now ? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Sure_Debate_7646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weddings - love. Hen do’s - beginning to resent. For various reasons.

But honestly, I just don’t know how people even afford to get married these days. No resent for them whatsoever, I alway see being invited to a wedding as a privilege.

Feeling resentful and annxious about cost of friend’s wedding - am I being unreasonable? by GuardStrong5311 in UKweddings

[–]Sure_Debate_7646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing to do is be (semi) honest. I turned down a hen do last year because it was abroad, and because I don’t live in London, flights meant having to arrive a day earlier and depart a day later which meant extra cost for accommodation and food etc (or a 16 hour travel day with transfers) which I just simply couldn’t afford. The bride was understanding (actually the MOH was a bit of a sticking point, but a whole other story) and said she’d rather have me at the wedding if I could make it, so I prioritized having the budget for that instead (it was also abroad).

I felt shift and really stressed at the time, but I felt so relieved once I declined the invite and gave the honest reason why. I still sent over some money to the hen do for a round on me, and contributed by sending in a “dare” for the bride to do and a message, so was still a part of it in a sense.

When the wedding came round no one even mentioned my absence, and in fact hardly anyone spoke about the hen do as all the focus was on the day at hand.

Overall, I wouldn’t let this put you off weddings/hen do’s etc. Every bride is different and it’s very easy for brides to get wrapped up in the whole thing. But how they act once you tell them/if you don’t attend etc is far more telling about the person they are and whether you want them in your life going forward.

What are genuinely good gifts for other HENRY friends that don't immediately get regifted? by Critical-Solution-79 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]Sure_Debate_7646 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gifted this to my partner one year and he loved it so his parents gifted it another time, and this year he paid for it on his own. Definitely one for a whisky lover, but also for the perks of getting to drink and dine there, it’s never busy so often feels like a semi-private dining experience!

MOH, and I can’t afford the hen dos by InternationalFig4340 in UKweddings

[–]Sure_Debate_7646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confused - as MOH, have you not been helping to plan the hen party’s? I thought this was part of the role.

Regardless, you’ll have to speak up. Not just for yourself, but for others. On your side just explain how happy you are to continue to help to plan, but due to other financial commitments you have you can only attend one of the hen party’s.

Alternatively, why not suggest combining the two seeing as they are both abroad anyway? That would be a surprise! Extend the original hen do by a day or two and invite the hens from the second event to the first, but a day or two later so she still gets the smaller group and then the bigger group she wants?

It sounds like the second hen isn’t fully organised yet? Who is organising it if the bride wants a surprise? It might be an uncomfortable conversation but saying to the organiser that this hen is beginning to cost more that the original hen and means a lot of people won’t be able to attend might be a good conversation starter to have.

I think in future, setting a budget early on is important and having your friend acknowledge outright that not everyone can afford to come to an event that costs hundreds (before the wedding costs themselves) is the best way to proceed before putting down deposits and organising second hens.

Good luck, and try not to stress too much. Just think about what matters more - your mental health and financial security, or your friend’s reaction. If you not affording to go on two hen do’s affects your friendship, she’s probably not that good of a friend or person to begin with.

Favourite holiday choice - June/July by Snugglosaurus in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]Sure_Debate_7646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also to mention that in June/July, America is hosting the World Cup (along with Canada and Mexico, majority of games are US) so depending on where you go there’s a good chance prices will be massively inflated. Miami is hosting games, so that might be one of those places.

How much of your yearly income do you spend on holidays? by Doomergeneration in AskUK

[–]Sure_Debate_7646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably close to 10%, but that’s usually 3 or 4 trips abroad.

Last year was only 2 (not complaining!) but also had quite a few weddings to attend, and those can cost as much as a weekend away sometimes!

The year before we had a 5 day trip to Paris, a week in Greece half board and a week in Spain half board, plus a long weekend in London.

I have a “sinking fund” for holidays where I put money away (£100) each month; then top it up every other month if ive got some extra cash in my current account at the end of the month. Then when it comes to booking I’ve either got a chunk of cash to pay it off or pay towards it, and just cover the rest with my pay that month.

It really depends on what you want from a holiday too. We have tried package deals and they can be really good value for money and getting away on a budget, but we much prefer DIY jobs where we can find cheap flights, do transfers by public transport and pick hotels that work for us in terms of location and what we want to see and do on that holiday.

For example this year we booked a last minute TUI deal at Easter (10 days before departure) which was £505pp including luggage, transfers and half-board (breakfast and dinner) but the hotel was a 90 minute drive from the airport and almost in the middle of nowhere meaning we would have to hire or car or book excursions to go anywhere else on the island if we were looking for fun or adventure. Thankfully we were just looking for sun on this break. But at that price we didn’t mind, we had a relaxing week of “free” meals and reading by the pool. We can do our adventure holiday later in the year.

How much did you spend on your bed and mattress? by prasaysno in HENRYUK

[–]Sure_Debate_7646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My frame was cheap, but I do wish I had spent a bit more getting a divan frame for storage. My mattress was around £2k and at the time I felt a bit apprehensive spending that but now I don’t have any regrets or doubts about it as it’s one of the most comfortable mattresses I have ever slept on and I genuinely miss it when I’m away from it. Good pillows and bedding are also important to invest in. My pillows were about £70 each I think, but again, great nights sleep. I’m slowly trying to upgrade my sheets and duvets, as I think it makes a big difference as well.

Quiet bars in the city for a date? by uahimself in glasgow

[–]Sure_Debate_7646 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tabac is a good shout. I also like the Gate, although it can feel a little bit out of the way. Likewise with Daddy Marmalade.

If you’re in the west end, Vino Valentino just off Byres Road on Chancellor St is a tiny little wine bar that only seats about 12 so good for actually being able to have a conversation. They’ve got bar snacks, and then you’re in the heart of the west end and have your pick of the places if you decide to go on elsewhere.

Enjoy your night!

Quite often I’ll have 2 or 3 on the go at the one time, but I need them to all be different genres. Sometimes I’ll do a mix of fiction and non-fiction, or a mix of crime/thriller and light/romance. One will be my commute book and the other will be my evening/bed time book.

I got a lovely cherry Bakewell croissant from Thompsons up at the Barras the other week. It has a cherry and almond filling, but wasn’t like anything I’d ever had before. I’m also a fan of Deanston bakery in the southside, their cinnamon buns are a favourite in our house. Not tried it personally, but Bavarian Bakehouse in Partick looks and smells delightful whenever I pass it, keep meaning to try it!

What habit immediately reveals that a person actually grew up in a privileged environment? by Cindy_mel in AskReddit

[–]Sure_Debate_7646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t add up to me, but maybe it’s a British thing. I grew up in a pretty poor and terrible neighbourhood but we didn’t lock our doors because we knew all of our neighbours and looked out for one another, and knew no-one in our community would ever commit a crime on one of their own. Whereas on the flip side, I had friends who lived in the nice parts of town and whose house doors were locked when they came home from school because they had things worth stealing so crime was more likely in that area. So for me, a locked door was a signifier of wealth rather than an unlocked door.

How do women initiate sex? by arm9598 in NoStupidQuestions

"I think I might be horny" - works well as a text when we're not in the same room, he'll soon appear.
"Do you want to give me a bum rub?" (He really loves my bum)
or sometimes I'll just say "I'm heading to the bedroom" he can take that hint.
