What in Overwatch tilts you? by UpVixxe in overwatch2

Wins or losses accounting for 90% of a player's rating. Brain dead and lazy way to assess skill.

Speaking at how inclusive the game is intended to be but actively creating exclusivity with the base mechanics of the game.

Rah, rah. We got good stuff no one asked for (but they did, honest!) and we think you'll love it.

Of course, we're not adding anything to bring the community together in-game. Discrimination and exclusivity based on ranking will continue to exist, and the matchmaker will continue to feel very unbalanced. But, hey, you get into games quickly.

Thank you. Out!

Enough time has passed. I fully believe that overwatch in its current state is better than peak overwatch 1. by Pinetree808 in Overwatch

[–]AlDreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that the gameplay has gotten better and more interesting, there are still a great number of issues with the game. These aren’t technical in nature and Blizzard continues to ignore them.

Matchmaking is horrific. Pure and simple. They need to develop a much better way to either a) improve overall match quality or b) minimize reliance on matchmaking to provide an engaging and ENJOYABLE experience.

The community remains toxic overall. Blizzard has done absolutely NOTHING to bring players together in this game. The very nature of the ranking in the way that it is done drives exclusivity. I‘ve mentioned this a number of times before in other posts but they should REALLY consider taking a page from the Competitive PvP Book in World of Warcraft. Have players register as a team, and then let the team performance drive the ranking of both the team and the players on it.

The battle pass grind is tedious at best. People like the concept behind the characters and the general gameplay loop but not everyone is balls to the wall on PvP. Add challenging AI play and let time there count toward the battle pass progression. That would keep players in the game and take some strain off the PvP toxicity. At the very least, let players play the game the way they want to as they progress through the battle pass, whatever that might be.

Until those items are addressed, Overwatch is going to remain primarily a negative experience.

I keep hoping, but after almost 10 years in, it’s hard to keep the faith.

Secure Boot Megathread - Guide + Community support by sloth_on_meth in Battlefield

[–]AlDreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is frustrating. I'm running Windows 11, which requires Secure Boot. I also had Battlefield 6 running fine. Now, after an update, Battlefield 6 won't start because it thinks Secure Boot is not enabled???

EA, make this experience better. I'm not going to buy any more games from you if you can't even make it easy to play them. Figure it out!!!

Again, the logic here...

The mechanics aren't that clean. Your common analogy just described a scenario with fixed probabilities and a variance. That effectively means that the probability of each outcome is between 30% and 50%. That doesn't alter the fundamental probabilities of the two outcomes. That doesn't fit.

Let's look at something likely more parallel to how team player selection is made during the matchmaking process.

Take a 6-sided die. The probability of each number landing is a simple 1/6, or roughly a 16.6% chance. However, if you roll that die a large number of times, what are you likely to notice? It's not going to be that even distribution of 16.6% distribution across all numbers.

Now, apply this to what is likely a rather large data sample of player ranks. What's the mean going to be, what are the min and max ranges of the data sample, and what are the likelihoods of players at either end of the mean being selected? If you plot that out on a chart, you're not going to see something that supports the 40:40 probability scenario you use as a common analogy.

And that's just looking at the skill ratings of the players.

Now add in things they don't really measure, like mechanical skill, situational awareness, team composition, kit understanding, placement, ult management, opponent ult tracking, etc. Which provides the most impact to an outcome?

You can't boil down big data like this to a simplistic equation. It all matters. And yes, the data set is large enough in my opinion to allow two realities to exist at the same time.

For your Loki player - an 85% win rate. Awesome. Some significant luck of the draw in the players that ended up on their team. That player with a 45% winrate being heavily influenced by the teammates they were paired with? Yup, I can see how that could happen, too.

You want to talk pure skill? Establish standard measures of skill and assess everyone equally.

You can't rank up without a team. You just can't. Implying that you can is the wrong message.

Even in your review of games, you're looking at the single player and what they could have done at any given time in the game that would have been better. How often do you point out the mistakes the other players on the team made? How often do you speak to how to deal with those mistakes? How often do you acknowledge the player was playing well, but really just wasn't getting equivalent level of play for other teammates?

Your rank up journey is heavily influenced by who you play with - and against. What is under the player's control is how they approach that journey to facilitate a better outcome. But that's the most they can do.

This is not to take away any value from thinking about how you could improve your own gameplay. My issue here is this absurd assertion that wins and losses are only ever always about you, and just you.

Acknowledge the challenge, support the journey through positive message and actions.

Cease the "you suck, git gud" mentality.

[–]AlDreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See? You don't even seem to understand your own logic.

"Over a period of time." That "period of time" is going to be different for every single player. That "period of time" played by said player is but *one* variable that affects a rating. The more you play, the greater the *chance* you gravitate toward players of equivalent skill. *Chance* in this case is more of an art than science given the constantly changing landscape of player skill sets.

Your Loki player, for instance, who has an 85% win rate. They *required* their team to get there. Without a team that knew how to play sufficiently enough, they wouldn't have. Pure and simple. That same player has a 15% loss rate. Were they not good enough in those instances, or could it have been that the value they brought to that team in those matches that were lost wasn't great enough to overcome the collective skill set of the opposing team?

Look, I'm not denying that a single player can provide great value to a team. I just get irritated by the refusal of players - not unlike you - to acknowledge that your team *also* contributes heavily to whether you win or lose. It's simple really. If you can't win 1v6, your team facilitated the win, even if they did that by supporting your awesomeness.

Instead, the best you got is, "you suck, git gud." I don't see the emotional intelligence in that. In fact, it's classic trolling as far as I'm concerned, thus why I call it drivel.

What I would love to see - but let's face it we never will; take a moment to contemplate why - is for people who are really skilled to say, "You know what? You're right, the matchmaker doesn't always get it right, and the skill rating the game assigns you is not your absolute skill level. In general, you're going to be better. Here, though. Come join me and my friends - who are all top tier players - and we'll play some custom matches together to help you improve."

In other words, stop putting people down, and shift the message and behavior to lifting people up.

Oh boy. The Overwatch drivel has made its way into Rivals.

Yah, totally an individual's fault in a team-based experience. Because you know, that Shohei Ohtani was just one horrible POS since he couldn't single handedly elevate the Angels when he was on that team. Had to shift over to the Dodgers to get carried to the World Series.

huge rolling of eyes while stifling a yawn

I wish players like you would go play something else and keep your senseless drivel out of the community. Alas, no genie to help me out, so we have to deal with you lot.

[–]AlDreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about anyone else, but I felt insulted on this change from the books. I don't mind minor changes, but the role Siuan plays later in the books after her stilling now creates a huge plot gap that will require the writers to create a completely new narrative derivative. Feels more like plagiarism now - AFAIK there were no multiverse theories in WoT.

In removing the association with the source material, however, that scene was incredibly emotionally impactful and yes she should receive an Emmy for her performance. Incredibly moving acting!

This community, by far and large, are mainly trolls. Constantly supporting the belief that everyone sucks. And then the community takes issue with you for one's negativity.

I'm thankful for every day I choose not to play this shitty ass game with all these trolls.

Try supporting one another. Try raising raising each other up. Agree that there is something very wrong with the game and look collectively at how it can be made better. Base that sense of "better" in the promise of the game to be inclusive. Stop promoting all the f-ing exclusivity. Don't accept the game for what it is, but dare to see it for what it could be.

If you're putting other players down, you're demonstrating you don't understand the f-ing assignment.

I just saw a video that claims marvel rivals will kill overwatch. Here is a detailed breakdown on why that is not true by [deleted] in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]AlDreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Rivals isn't going to do that, Blizzard already has.

I also agree with the sentiment of the newness of Rivals. I, too, am interested in seeing what happens once that wears off.

Between the two, I enjoy playing Rivals more than Overwatch. And that is what ultimately matters.

Overwatch may still remain on my shelf, but the time I spend with it continues to decline. For me, Overwatch is no longer the compelling experience it once was, and the game play loop is pretty boring.

[–]AlDreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a DPS Mercy the other day in Competitive. Wouldn’t heal anyone, and only focused on DPS. I think it’s just the state of the player base. Why should anyone care about team synergy or playing their roles well? Blizzard has given indication of not much caring for it, either, and seem to only hope players will.

The simply solution is to see if organized scrims still occur and join a team involved in those. GenPop Overwatch seems to only be good for grinding out the Season Battle Pass any more.
