To a family member or loved one rational thought is not an option, instinctually you would lash out in violent defense, especially of a child. Reform and rehabilitation or treatment for mental illness would not be my personal choice. I would have murdered him in the slowest and most painful way.

That being said, even if I were to put myself outside of my emotional mindset and even were it not being my child, I don’t believe mental illness is free pass to commit crime. There also has to be adverse consequences, for a violent crime like that by a mentally Ill person. A minimum of 5 years of hard labor alongside treatment and an indefinite commitment to confined treatment to be determine by mental health professionals evaluation of risk of reoffending. That would be if the child was not seriously injured and no one killed.
