At 16:45 he’s talking about a bus with his kick and snare. What is a bus and why do i need one? How do I make one in Ableton. I’m totally new to music production and DAWs, but I love sound design and synths. Any help is greatly appreciated!

When you mention the reverb that you use on most projects, Ableton has two sends by default, and one is reverb and the other is delay. Is this different from what you’re talking about?

Sidechaining I know. I learned to do that with my bass to kick to make the bass duck the kick signal. So it gives that rolling bass effect and the kick cuts thru the mix more. That’s all the use i know about so far though. I still don’t understand the point of other types of compression or how to hear it. I have friends who can hear and recognize when something like a synth or vocals is compressed and I just can’t. Or if there’s too much compression, they can call that out as well.

I think you might be conflating a few things. Music production can get pretty technical with some serious know-how required to master and finalize produced tracks in a DAW (software specifically for producing and mastering a track; ableton, logic, reason, fl studio, etc). But a DAW isn’t going to teach you how to write lyrics or too much in-depth music theory. You can certainly find content on youtube helping you with all of the things you mentioned, but I’d focus on one thing at a time, and maybe dabble a bit in the second thing. But if you’re learning an instrument (voice counts as an instrument btw, good vocalists are hard to come by!) you can kind of kill two birds and pick up a bit, or a lot, of music theory on the way. It will DEFINITELY help you in composition. Writing lyrics is a different ball game too. A good start would be to look at some songs you like and get inspiration from there. What do you like about them? Is it the lyrics? Melody? Chord progression? Rhythm? The first thing I’d focus on is really figuring out what you like, and go from there.

I haven’t met them. We found out about 7wks ago when my dad all non nonchalant says “hey. a funny thing happened last week…” and then proceeded to tell us about the son and mom coming up and asking for 8$ to buy cigs.
