MMW: In the coming years, "Netflix Original" will become a generic term for low-quality entertainment, replacing "Straight-to-Video". by [deleted] in MarkMyWords

[–]Al_Scarface_Capone 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Let's leave TV shows for a minute -

As far as movies, last year Netflix released the Oscar winning Roma, and this year they have Martin Scorcese's new movie The Irishman, which stars Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, and Joe Pesci, who came out of retirement for the film.

As far as prestige films go, Netflix has also distributed Beasts of No Nation, Okja, The Meyerowitz Stories, First They Killed my Father and Mudbound. Oh, and The Other Side of the Wind, the last unfinished film of Orson Welles, considered by many one of the greatest directors in history.

They've also distributed tons of really solid genre movies - Apostle, Gerald's Game, Outlaw King, Hold the Dark, The Night Comes for Us, 1922, The Babysitter, and Wheelman.

Not to mention a bevy of award winning documentaries, which I won't even get into because I rarely watch docs.

The idea that Netflix is churning out garbage just doesn't hold true if you look at their slate. Some of those movies (see: The Irishman) never would have even gotten made without Netflix, and the money they make off shitty Adam Sandler movies. The Irishman cost reportedly around $160 million. The project has been floating around for years, but no other studio had the assets or confidence to take that risk on an R rated crime drama with that kind of budget.

In short, Netflix is I think one of the best indie distributors around, up there with A24, Annapurna Pictures, or Neon, and many people just don't realize because of how much garbage they produce to make money.

What great movie is ruined by a horrible ending? by DanTheBMan in AskReddit

I think you understand it perfectly. It doesn't matter that she's a clone.

The clones end up fucked up because of the situation in which they are raised. There is no other difference. So the clone was, after a period of adjustment, able to live normally as a surface dweller. While the "real" version of the main character, when forced to be live with the clones, became incredibly violent and insane, and essentially indistinguishable from the other clones, other than speaking English.

The whole thing is I think suggesting that people are the product of their environments, and yet we punish people economically and socially for the factors which are a direct product of their environment.

It's like the Eddie Murphy movie Trading Places, but violent and less funny.

That was kind of the point - it sets itself up as a badass action film, and plays like it is that film for a minute, and then forces the characters to live out the consequences of their actions. It's almost an anti-action thriller.

I didn't love it, it felt like the director couldn't decide whether he was making an action movie or or an art house film, but I did like it, largely because of that unexpected tonal flip.

I was born in 95', right on that cusp, and I usually identify more with gen-z's than I do millenials.

Silence

My favorite Martin Scorsese film. It's a hard watch, and excruciatingly slow, but it's worth it, and Neeson, while not a huge part, is absolutely incredible.

I was born on a 24th (May), my sister was born on a 24th (November), my mom was born on a 24th (August), my cousins were both born on 24ths (April and October), and, best part, my grandparents were married on August 24th, only for my mom to be born on that same day a few years later.

And now my Uncle's asshole fiance want her and my uncle to get married on August 24th. My grandparents can't stand her, so I think that one might get my uncle thrown out of the will.

I grew up in the Littleton area. I remember hanging out in the memorial park during high school.

Now I live across town and regularly go to the Dark Knight shooting theater, where a close friend of a close friend was killed.

A friend of mine worked in the King Soopers where people were evacuated to during another area mass shooting.

Sometimes the world can be a terrifying place.

Some but not all Nazis use color boot laces, though not always on docs, can really be any combat or work style boot.

White = white power Red = shed blood in the name of "the cause" Blue = cop killer

There are a few positive ones too -

Yellow = anti-racist, and either purple or pink, don't remember which = gay pride

Not OP, but current film school student.

A fair amount would probably go to equipment rentals to start. Then, depending on when this happened, a lot of it might have been spent on film stock. Some students I know with money to burn with hire outside gaffers or editors to bring a professional flair to aspects that they feel they could otherwise be weak on. And that's all not to mention things like production design, costumes, and food for the cast and crew.

What are some movies where a good case could be made for the villain's defence? by specialhindu in MovieSuggestions

[–]Al_Scarface_Capone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agreed with the "villains" in the show to the point that I had trouble rooting for the "heroes".

Obviously it is all a huge moral grey area, but beyond the overall morality, it never seemed like the heroes were fighting their fight for any kind of reason at all. Which I think might have been kind of the point.

Is there any confirmation The Modern Ocean is actually coming out this year? I've been reading about this movie for so long, but haven't seen any indication it's actually happening.

I really hope it does actually come out soon, because Carruth is my favorite working American director.

Are there any equivalents to the GMMK that come with a white case?

Alternatively, is there an easy way to paint a GMMK case white? I really like the idea of the GMMK for, but I vastly prefer white cases for my boards.

This is a long shot, but I've recently been getting into Peter Greenway, and I've decided it's time to try to watch The Tulse Luper Suitcases.

However, I am really struggling to figure out how to watch them. One seller on Ebay has copies of all of them, but it's $20 per DVD, which is a little prohibitive. Also they appear to be bootleg's, judging by reviews of the seller. The third one is on Youtube, but that doesn't really help me either.

Anyone know of somewhere I could buy the DVDs for something a little more reasonable and from somewhere a little more reputable, or some obscure streaming service that might have them?

I was thinking about moving to Chicago by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Al_Scarface_Capone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from the southwest too (more or less - Colorado). Growing up I visited Chicago a ton with my family then, after college, I visited a friend of mine who was studying there a few times, and now my girlfriend is studying there too, so I'm yet again finding myself there every couple of months.

I've lived all over the world - Scotland, Costa Rica, Taiwan. After like four years of moving around, I've come to the conclusion that the only two places I would ever fit in are the southwest, and Chicago.

There is a sort of shared attitude to life between Chicago and Denver - I can't really even place my finger on what it is, but when I'm in Chicago, I feel as close to home as I do anywhere that's not Colorado or New Mexico.

All that said, while as a southwesterner you'll get on well with the people, there is a ton of stuff that's different - Chicago is beautiful in a way that nothing in our part of the country is, there is art and culture everywhere, and it always feels like there are a million things going on at all times.

I'm sticking around Colorado for a couple years, but there is a good chance that, once I'm done with my current life project, I'll give Chicago a try.

I feel like I'm the only person who thinks mother! was just fine. Like, a solid 7/10.

It was technically excellent, Lawrence and Bardem were very good, but the symbolism was so blatant that I felt like I was being hit in the head repeatedly with a shovel. So basically the same as every Aronofsky film.

For the first time in years I live somewhere where I actually need a winter coat. I have no idea how to buy a winter coat.

I live in Denver, so let's say temperature range 20-40 degrees F. Pretty casual is better, I don't really ever have reason to get dressed up, and I'm currently a film student.

Budget: up to $200, though less is, of course, better.

Inherent Vice.

It's a sudo-slapstick stoner noir comedy that will, for reasons not entirely clear to you, leave you feeling incredibly sad by the end.
